itt: art style degradation
right looks better
>>288505644I'll start us off
>>288506431Zeref got such a downgrade it's hilarious
>>288506431cat face Lucy is very punchable
>>288505644yeah Namek was peak
>>288505644isn't the right by Toyotaro?
this happened in the span of like 2 years, maybe the most radical decline ever seenit'll probably be an eternal mystery what the fuck happened between those two years
>>288506986No
>>288507010all his assistants left
>>288507087he had the same group of assistants for both drawingsthey only handle backgrounds, not character art (unless there are some accessories to draw).
Rumiko and it makes me sad what the fuck is that ranma
>>288507010The man is burned out, a common fate for Shonen Jump mangakas.
>>288507347I'm glad it flopped because otherwise you'd see an upsurge of manga with extremely low effort art that everyone pretends is actually better, like what happened when black spiderman cartoon movie came out and now every cgi animated movie is ugly 2fps eye cancer.
>>288507347>a common fate for Shonen Jump mangakas. Not this hard and fast. Keep in mind that the chapters were shorter and he took several breaks.
>>288507347he did all the things that a mangaka should to avoid burnout though. he took a long hiatus, worked on his own personal projects, took break weeks every month, decreased page count from 20 to 15.even so, he completely fell off from what can be considered his peak to his absolute lowest, art wise.
genuinely pains me to say this but harahis rendering lacks clarity and his figures are too exaggerated
>>288508075Meanwhile, in Chapter 1114 (actual):
>>288505644Gege's is something to behold.>from early 2024 to 2025/26
>>288505644I don't think Toriyama's later style was bad but it just didn't fit Dragon Ball. Since he mainly worked on Dragon Quest after DB ended, it makes sense why his style shifted heavily towards something that fit DQ instead of DB.
>>288508523Apples to oranges, plus his illustrations always looked uncanny.
>>288505644Where is the right one from?
>>288508523Ain't no fucking way Xitter's AI translation is so unironically dog shit that it can't up with "Samurai Waltz" for "Someone Hertz". It's literally written in fucking katakana: さむわんへるつ
>>288509391Came up with*
>>288508523it's mainly gege's way of coloring/shading. it works for the men he draws to make them look angular/muscular, but doesn't work at all for female characters.he's better off drawing females in b&w
>>288505644DBS Krillin looks like a little kid. toriyama went senile before he died.
>>288508523>So much of a fag that he can't draw cute girls anymoreGrim.
>>288507913The girls in his newer Nobunaga manga look ridiculous.
>>288509447His coloring and shading have absolutely nothing to do with him illustrating those characters with fucking Ken Penders-tier facial proportions, anon.
>>288507347This is why i read Shonen Jump manga cautiously. 16 page chapter / week is just physically impossible
>>288509391It does this all the time.Manga names get swapped constantly.
and it keeps getting worse
>>288509510This statement is retarded. Firstly because WSJ manga are 20 pages a week; it's not the 80's anymore. Secondly because there are mangaka in both it and other magazines that manage that just fine and then some. Osamu Nishi writes, storyboards, and illustrates Iruma-kun every week. She also writes and storyboards its monthly spin-off, AND writes and storyboards Ichi the Witch weekly. You also have mangaka like Masaguni Igarashi in WSM who have been working weekly for the better part of a decade, putting out art like picrel and actually improving over time. Yes, weekly manga is a fucking brutal career path. And yes some artists can't hack it. But there are those who do just fine and even those who thrive.
>>288509506i'm not saying they'd look good either way but they'd look better if drawn in the same style as the b&w drawing.if you look at his color drawings of jjk, they also tend to look pretty uncanny compared to his manga drawingssomething about having to put color and details into a drawing makes his brain melt
>>288509733His colored pieces have never been very good, but they were never THAT bad when he was being serialized.
>>288509795he generally didn't draw women in them
Why do artists art degrade? Is it on purpose or accidental?>>288505644Namek Goku's neck is leaning up, he's muscular, Goku's chest is leaning towards his opponent, and his hair is unrestrained. Meanwhile, modern Goku's neck is leaning down, he's slim but muscular, Goku's chest is titled away from his opponent, and his hair is restrained. The impression is weakened.Regarding the later art style, the lines look thicker, and Goku's clothing looks elastic/rubbery/molded while his body and hair looks clay-like. Meanwhile, Namek Goku has a metallic sheen to his skin and hair, while his clothes are paper-like.
>>288509879>Why do artists art degrade? Is it on purpose or accidental? Some of it is just shifting in style. Toriyama wanted to become more rounder, comedic, lighter again. Some of it is wear; Togashi basically became shitposting material most of the time because of age and degrading health, poor care of himself. Some of it is offloading work onto assistants, which is how Berserk kinda became very different in its own ways later on. Most artists don't intend to "degrade", but if it's intentional it's either to fuck around a bit or to just change their focus.Though you do occasionally get shit like Naruto just becoming too damn clean because Kishimoto wanted to make it look more like the anime and cut down on detailing work.
>>288509867That's still perfectly serviceable compared to the shit he's put out since then. The face itself looks fine. Gege just isn't very good at coloring. But that's a far cry from the completely warped proportions in that other art and I can't fathom how you can't see that a massive difference there is between them.
>>288508075I have to actively seek out the raws because the official scans are hard to look at.
>>288505644It’s Condensation.
>>288507347He got the fat check and is set for life. He won. Kishimoto ran the same race but in thrice the time span.
>>288507913Literally sit down. He is above critique.
>>288507252No fucking way that's her.
Change of artstyle =/= degradation
>>288509543At least his arms aren't broken anymore. I didn't mind the change for Josuke because he always looked way too much like Jotaro originally.
>>288508075>remember, kids, do not smoke.
>>288508628I mean, Dragonquest mostly looked like Dragonball during Dragonball's run. When Toriyama drew the earlier DQ protagonists in his later style they also looked off. It really has nothing to do with DQ.DQ does help hiding the flaws of his later style since the characters there have more detailed outfits than DB ones, so you see less of their bodies, but it's not like his style changed to favor DQ somehow.>>288509879In Toriyama's case he outright seems to regret some of his older art style choices, like how he had a note for Toyotaro criticizing a sketch he had drawn for giving Goten and Trunks since they're still teens (Talking about the Super Hero older teenager versions here), when Toriyama himself had given muscles to the younger Cell Saga Gohan. He also seemed to completely dump line width variety once switching to digital art.
>>288512288i like the '92, '97, '05 and '08 art styles
>>288512288The artstyle peaked in 05
>>288511387his spine being broken is worse than his arm
>>2885122882008 is the best. Kinda sad to go back into the habit of separating the eyes too much by 2011 though.
>>288509543Besides everyone dropping the protein shakes post SDC i think the core issue is that Araki really struggles to make different faces now.His style is refined when it comes to details and shading but he really needs to get a grip with faces, late part 7 was really egregorious with this.Id argue the worst the manga has looked is early part 5, part 4's style did not fit it at all.
>>288505644Namek was good but the fluffy4s ssj hair was awful and lazy. Late android was much better even if it went too deep into musclefag shit. Buu saga was peak art.
>>288507010He just didn't give a shit anymore, it started with the art and then around aging arc the writing started to fall apart from the mangaka not caring as well
>>288509543I just dislike how Araki's current style makes Jonathan and young Joseph look anorexic.
>>288511443>Oda quit smoking around the time skip>his art has degraded steadily in quality ever sinceRemember, kids: smoke excessively.
