Commit a debt you can't pay, you become a debt slave in prison. That is what we do with men who can't pay alimony/child support. The only difference is they are "wards" of the state instead of being sold to the public to serve off their crimes. Given how often people point out abuse of our criminal system, Isekai slavery is fucking heaven in comparison. You at least get someone who gives a fuck about you, these wards don't give a fuck, rape inmates, or brutalize/kill them AND see no jail time for their abuses. At least some Isekai will punish you for mistreating slaves, that is way better than what real humans do. Oh and yes, Japan, the US, pretty much everyone has had POW camps where treatment was brutal as fuck. So your little raccoon girl there got treated wonderfully in comparison. Had she been a POW, she'd have been raped nonstop, used in human experiments, and killed with experimental chems/drugs/treatments. Japan especially did some nasty things. It is one of the reasons the heroes didn't know of some functions of the weapons, such as the method sharing. Out of all of them, the shield was hit the hardest, though the weapon spirits said that since it was naofumi who got selected as the shield hero, everything worked out in the end.
