>>288532660Women have sex with dogs, but Rikiishi wasn't a dog. He was a wolf.
>>288533764This is the single greatest post that has ever been made on /a/ regarding the discussion of Ashita no Joe, I am humbled to have seen it.

>>288532660We're coming up on 60 years since Ashita no Joe was serialized yet Yoko is still one of the most complex female characters in all manga. Sometimes I think nobody learned the right lessons from it and they just reference the cross counter and Joe's death pose.
She's a whore
>>288537392calling yoko complex is like calling an owl wisepure projection, there is nothing going on in that mind, just because you hold a still frame for a long time doesn't mean the character is thinking something profound
>>288537392She filters people to this day so yeah.I believe shoujo's had a fair share of complex girls but outside that world she's at the top with few others, I'd say Maetel. It's just part of manga's decline.
>>288537574She's both deeply selfish and capable of understanding others down to their core. Joe is right that her charity initiatives at the start are performative and exploitative, only done to make her feel better about herself. She works hard to break through into the most male-dominated field imaginable of boxing promotion in part to prove she's not just a vapid rich girl and the bonds she developed with Rikiishi and later with Joe have layers upon layers from exploitation to kinship, attraction and mutual self-destruction. She leads both of them to their deaths despite her feelings for them, even manipulating Joe out of his trauma caused by Rikiishi's death, but it's also exactly what they asked for and she's the only one who understands that's the way they want to live by. She's absolutely one of the most complex female characters ever written.
>>288538035that didn't happen
>>288538035This happened
>>288532660Are you 12? Of course they fucked.
>>288538035 i don't think she was really in love with joe. she sees him as a wild dirty animal and possibly fascinating enough to try and tame i might be biased though as her vegeta-ass hairline disgusts me
>>288533764woah.
>>288538283Whether it was romantic love or not is kind of beside the point, but I think it's wrong to say she saw him as beneath her like you imply. She was desperately attempting to save his life by getting a second opinion on his punch drunk syndrome and attempting to tell him, and in a last-ditch effort by confessing before the world title match. She had nothing to gain for herself by that point, she just didn't want him to meet the same end as Rikiishi. And yet despite struggling to watch the match and even leaving for a while, she ultimately accepts to let him end things on his own terms and stay by his side, even stealing the towel from Danpei. And Joe finally recognizes her worth by passing his gloves on to her. They were equals in every way.
>>288538283>>288538586i thought her falling in love with Joe was her way of coping with Rikishii's death, because Joe reminded her so much of him.
>>288538035Her helping Rikiishi during his cut even though she hated seeing him like that was pretty amazing. When she offers him the water but still makes sure that it shouldn't negatively affect his weight loss is the perfect example of supporting someone as best you can even when you don't agree with their goals.
>>288538586It's kinda like Marissa Tomei's character in The Wrestler, except she doesn't stay to watch Mickey Roarke die in the ring
>>288533764I thought he was a boxer
>>288533764>but Rikiishi wasn't a dog. He was a wolf. The main 4 boxers (Rikiishi Joe, Carlos and Jose) were wolves. The only dog was Nishi.
>>288537392>Sometimes I think nobody learned the right lessons from itThis. It was a story about self destruction and how to not follow your own path. Joe and Rikiishi were examples of what NOT to do with your life, Jose Mendoza was what you should aspire for and Carlos/Kim/Wolf were victims of Joe's obsessive self destruction
>>288541283I don't think the series itself was written in a way that clearly expressed judgment on how the characters acted and what they believed in. If anything one of the lessons not learned by the later manga industry is letting the reader come to their own conclusions instead of preaching at them or treating them like morons.

>>288535823This. They would probably end up marrying if Rikiishi.......you know>>288535861>>288538223I don't know about that. i'm not familiar other Ikki Kajiwara works to know if he usually writes relationships like this.
Why do Showa-era stories always seem to suggest that following your passion leads to ruin?
>>288541283>It was a story about self destruction and how to not follow your own pathI wonder about the spirit of anyone that reads such a beautiful story and this is what they get out of it. Joe and Rikiishis stories are tragic but not self destructive at all, unless you equate all sacrifice to self destruction which says more about the kind of person you are. Boxing is not for the faint of heart. Every low raked boxer is out there getting punched in the face for scraps. They could be doing anything else, but boxing is their paths. There was no other path for Rikiishi and Joe other than boxing. Its not a whim for them, its their lives. Thats why they have such a strong bond to each other, they both are cut from the sam cloth despite having wildly different backgrounds. What was Joe gonna do? Stop boxing and work a normal job like Nishi? Thats FAR more tragic than him dying in the ring. Thats making sure the light of his life will never shine brightly forever. This modern leftoid effort to essentially pathologize every sort of mentality that isnt ok with living in the liberal world order. Joe couldnt have been a tragic figure, he must have some sort of mental illness that makes him throw away his life. Its pathologizing everything thats goes away from the norm. Joe understood that life doesnt hold any value if you live in a cage. Thats what most people do. They live in a cage and they make up copes about it. Joe was never gonna settle down, he wouldnt be Joe if he did. Thats why so many people find Joe inspiring, because he traded his life for living genuinely, even if it resulted in tragedy. I guess People want their cake and to eat it too. They want Joe to have had a genuine fulfilling life but not in boxing. Its a very coward interpretation because they cant handle how ungenuine their own lives are in comparison to Joe's. They dont wanna accept that living genuinely is risky, because they've been told their entire lives that risk is to be avoided.
>>288543503>This modern lefto-Stopped reading.
>>288537392There are complex female characters, but they're rarely on stuff aimed at men sadly, specially on the reiwa era, most guys just wanna see a cute face with big titties rather than a complex character, specially on stuff like isekai which is abundant and get a lot of anime adaptation.
>>288543245I guess because the economy was too shitty so following your passions was seen as selfish when you could direct that energy to help revitalize the country or something like that?
>>288543503>t.
>>288532660Considering Pegasus Seiya is inspired on Joe and Saori Kido is Yoko, does that mean Jabu is Riki? He was originally conceived as Seiya's rival
>>288542492>Saotome Ai is a high school girl from a well-to-do family. When she was kid, she was in an accident that resulted in a young boy being permanently scarred between his eyes while she emerged unscathed. Although she never knew who he was, she never forgot him.>Taiga Makoto' a young man with a scar between his eyes, has had a rough life, but has emerged as a rough, tough bully - a thug and a brawler and about as rude as they come - all of which he blames on the incident that gave him his scar. When Ai and Makoto run into each other again, Ai feels guilt for what Makoto has become and decides to intervene and rehabilitate him. Is he a diamond in the rough, or just a bully?>KAJIWARA Ikki>NAGAYASU Takumi
>>288532660>hottest characterHottest Bejita, maybe.
In at least one instance, in at least a single moment, a woman actually understood.
>>288543245That's hardly just a showa era thing. It's not even a Japan thing. It's just basic story telling. Dreamers are engaging protagonists but they need conflict.
>>288545724I love this manga.
Have to say smug and bitchy Yoko is hottest Yoko, though her best is in the final moments of each version when she's beyond that. She's great in the end of Joe 1 too.
>>288543559Joe ran in Weekly Shounen Magazine, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything remotely comparable in terms of general depth in it or the other major shounen publications nowadays. I know every story reflects the era it was written in, but any era would benefit from more works of this caliber being mainstream.
>>288546242And on the other hand Noriko is nicest near the start, when she's insecure but genki. Poverty pressures her down too hard over time.
>>288541283>Joe and Rikiishi were examples of what NOT to do with your lifeNo they weren't. They were self-destructive, but to simply do what you love isn't and should never be treated as a bad thing.>Jose Mendoza was what you should aspire forBeing a smug prick who doesn't even care when he injures people and destroys their careers? Why? Because he has a family?>Kim was le victimThe same guy who practically bragged about his own trauma? Fuck you and your preachy bullshit.
>complaining about female anime characters when it's the only medium that produces good ones on a regular basisBeing too much of a midwit loser makes you talk like a dumb feminist.

>>288543559Do you read shoujo or josei? Are you mentally retarded?
Sachi won.
>>288543503The "leftoid" part was unnecessary but you're bang on the money about the rest. Ashita no Joe isn't a particularly judgemental work. Why was Joe smiling at the end? Because he was happy.
>>288545576Not really. Seiya and Saori are clearly Joe and Yoko, but there's no Rikiishi stand in.
>>288547697Triggered
>>288538035I agree. Though while she grows a lot I think it's important that she's already an unusual person at the start. If she was completely vapid Joe wouldn't have felt as offended. She was a strange loner with thoughts a step above Joe's.
