The humor is high IQ and very Japanese. If you get it, you get it. If you don't, you were filtered by one or both of those things. The latter at least you can make up for by learning more Japanese and the Japanese culture. I very nearly watched this too soon, myself. I would've appreciated it more with another year of watching certain specific anime. But when I go back to Nichijou now I get a lot more out of it and it's even better than I remember.
Besides that is the technical aspects, which, as expected of KyoAni, was pretty much the best of its particular era. It has been surpassed now, including by some other KyoAni work. But for its time, you'd be hard-pressed to find better. I don't really understand the people who complain that it was so well animated. I guess some people just prefer a badly directed slideshow. Me, I actually appreciate animation as a medium, as an artform, so I want to see the artists going all out and pushing the limits. That's not forced, that's just passion. They could half-ass it if they wanted to, save themselves some money. When they choose to make something better than it strictly needs to be to fill some contract, that's a positive.
