I think they are right to some degree (we don't have to forget it is a romance), but they also need to consider the values of the setting.The viewer is usually a person that know only one kind of political comunication: systematic perjury, low level sophistry, accountability always debatable and relativistic.Instead, In this kind of setting (in these kind of settings), the values are different. Words matters, formal responsability matter, even deception is enclosed in specific rituals that need boldness and readiness to sacrifice to balance it. If it is said "you die", you will die, if it is said "you live" you will live. Is the kind of valorial system where a skilled men have to die, and its an indicidual loss but a collective gains, because words and acts are always followed and there is less individualism. Even a tyrant like Taira is more than just a petty schemer that lust only for hedonism and personal gains, and even an empty emperor has to stay there, those are things difficult to understand from our perspective that is based on the perpetual emptiness of words.
