Cardcaptor Sakura is not carried by it's story, which is neither the primary appeal nor the primary focus of the show. What makes the show worth watching are the lovable cast, breathtaking animation, and the beautiful world presented to the viewer. Story takes a more important role later down the line, but if you don't enjoy the show after the first few (mostly self-isolated) episodes, it likely isn't for you. The show is charming far before it's story is enthralling.When I first considered watching this show, it was mostly because of all the gorgeous screenshots I had seen. I wondered if it was really worth my time to give a show a shot just because the animation seemed top-notch. In the end, I fell in love with the episodic storytelling; Sakura learning to overcome her obstacles and grow as a person, supported by wonderful people in a wonderful world.The most difficult part about talking about this show is the fact that it's appeal isn't really translatable into language. It's presentation of the profound beauty of youth, friendship and love, coupled with majestic music and animation to match, is an experience that transcends what can be conveyed by any number of written characters in this box.Just give it a shot. It's worth trying.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand カードキャプターさくら. The humor is extremely subtle, and without the ability to understand multiple layers of irony most of the jokes will go over your head. There’s also the characters' nihilistic outlook, which makes their personalities even more complex drawing heavily from 50s cinema for instance, namely James Dean. The audience understands this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike カードキャプターさくら truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Sakura’s existential catchphrase “DIE YOU FUCKING MUTT,” which itself is a cryptic reference to the kitchen sink realism of John Osborne. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as カードキャプターさくら's genius wit unfolds itself on their screens.
