Rock is a lady's modesty, Paul Reed Smith 2026 SE Rock Lady Limited Edition.

Yuck! PRS. The most acquired taste in guitars ever. The neck is just the right thickness and reach to piss me off when I am playing. It always has a clunky and slow feel for me, and even though Modesty Rock is a shredders' anime the PRS almost always sound too creamy to really have that rock edge. That said maybe the souped up selectors can give this model some more edge. My complaints are mostly personal preference, but this guitar has been girled up to the max with the pink pearl facade. It looks like a guitar that is just begging to be covered with hello kitty stickers. Pass.

Yui Hirasawas' Gibson Les Paul Standard in Heritage Cherry Sunburst

This is like an Italian sports car of guitars. You want to have it, you want to be seen having it, but maybe you don't want to be riding around in it all the time. The fact that Yui makes this axe her workhorse is kind of a shock when you think about it. But It's hard to say no to the hand crafted and truly organic feeling neck and stomping roar of a twin humbucker Les Paul. Yui only bought the guitar on sight but it's a good thing that the show demonstrates that she's monogamous to the guitar because it's easy to make a guitar that sounds close to an LP but nothing quite feels like one when you play it. Still with the amount she uses this thing you'd think the show would have had an episode where the head stock snaps off. Oh, Gibson. I'd love it but I wouldn't put it through as much mileage as Yui.

Azusa Nakanos' 1969 reissue Japanese Mustang in Apple Red.

Maybe fender is your thing. Maybe short scale is your thing. I'm too goddamn big to want to try to slip between the frets of this little Cinderella slipper six string. I think that fender made the perfect guitar for tiny Japanese School girls and Kurt Cobain. I need more heft. Hard pass.

The Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Les Paul Custom BOCCHI EDITION.

Oh, Epiclone. You poor knockoff brand. Epiphone is the brand enslaved to Gibson to produce their model guitars at affordable prices. They look pretty good until you see there's no open book headstock. That little difference is enough to spoil the illusion, which brings to mind 'why bother!?' In the Anime Bocchi plays a Gibson 69' black beauty with gold hardware. But do you think that Gibson would lower themselves to do a tie in with Bocchi, the bubblegum haired anxiety arpegiator? If they didn't cross over with K-ON! No way did Bocchi have a shot. Go Gibson or go home, but the company split the difference and released an epiphone copy. Just their way of saying 'we believe in you, just not that much.' Maybe having one as a starter or as a studio back up is sensible but that inner guitar snob never goes away. Epiphone has that stigma of 'I couldn't afford the Gibson.' As if Bocchi didn't have it bad enough.

Hitori Gotos' PACIFICA 611 V BTR LTD

When the Main bitch is too high maintenance, there's always the side ho.

Yamaha. The company that wants you doing a kick ass guitar solo while riding a motorcycle. The quality of Yamaha is not bad. The brand kind of lives in the shadow of Schecter but this is a pretty cool axe for one minor feature and one major. Minor is that it has a tremolo bar, which is always fun, but remember that it's not a locking headstock, so expect changes in tuning. But the other nice quirk is the p90. That single coil neck pickup must have a unique and snappy sound with that nice p90 warmth. Very interesting. I'd prefer the tremolo with the two screw rather than the six screw setup, but this would be a nice instrument in your kit. Just know that if someone sees you with it they will know why you have it and they will demand see if you can play the solo.

Kasumi Toyamas' ESP RANDOM STAR

So you like spiky guitars? How about spiky stary guitars. I'm surprised this thing doesn't come with glitter. A guitar in that no mans,' no womans land of being B.C. Rich cheap and spiky perfect for your fifth grade Metallica cover band but also being pop sugary enough for your fifth grade girl to buy it used, play it once and put it in the closet and forget about it for the rest of her life. It's in an identity limbo of floundering concepts. I have no doubt you can make a tune on it, but you'll be doing it from a bizzare artistic plane. Pass.

Nina Iseri's G&L ASAT Classic butterscotch.

Fender is coming for this anime. For those of you that don't know the Fender company is trying to sue guitar companies that are copying the stratocaster. YEAH. The most copied guitar body in the history of the world. They're trying to shut that shit down. First Gibson came for the explorers, then Fender came for the stratocasters, and when they come for the Telecasters, the G&L ASAT Classic had no one to help them. But seriously, I feel like every guitarist has to have a telecaster at some point. Some clone or proper. You need to play one, and this one is a nice one. A brand that is a little off the beaten path, but not unknown and it has that same color of that shape when Springsteen was on top of the world, or when Prince shredded the George Harrison memorial. Yes. Good. Telecaster. Yum. No brainer.

Momoka Kawaragis' Psychederhythm Psychomaster 2

Surfs up, sky trippers. The waves are high and the vibe is cool. The surf tremolo and dual P-90s along with the sky-blue sparkle-glistened and wavy body of this totally tubular Mustang/Jaguar inspired mermaid serenader is ready to hang ten. BUT THIS ANIME HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SURFING! Seriously, I have never seen a guitar that looked more like a surf guitar. I don't know it it's possible. Even the name hearkening with repeated alteration pointed to psychedelia seems to imply that touching this guitar will compel you to drop acid and bury your toes in the sand as the tide comes in and the sun sets. How is there this much surf in one guitar and not in the show? Far out.

Sawako Yamanakas' Epiphone 1958 reissue Korina Flying V, Alpine White

Back to K-on and back to Epiphone. Epi Vs don't look as awkward as other Epiphone Gibson cloines because the design is more or less identical. But that's not what I want to talk about. Story time I bought one of those Chinese import kits to make a flying V because I wanted a goofy guitar to call my own. What I realized is that every art work of Sawako playing this guitar is bullshit. They all show her sitting down. This guitar HATES it when you sit down. It slides off and if you got the glued in neck, like hers the body is so light that it wants to neck dive. The V is not a casual guitar. You have to be standing and holding and attentive all the time to keep it flying straight. To think this woman looked at a perfectly good, and rare SG that she could have taken home, but thought 'Nah. I'll keep fighting my V.' It is sad that she's single, because that right there is commitment and dedication in a woman.

Yeah. That's all I wanted to crank out for now. So yeah, Rock band anime thread I guess.

I can't get over those things. They look so goofy and where's the weight for control in them? I won't knock the players, but it's not my style, man.

I don't know what you mean by "weight of control"
In any case I also used to think these instruments were weird but I guess they grew on me. I think you just have to approach these like I imagine they were designed, that is, almost as if these guitars existed in a vacumn
It kind of makes sense if you try to picture the solid body electric guitar as a problem to be solved from scratch rather than a tradition descending from the acoustic guitar. If you take a look at the bodies for Telecaster and The Les Paul, their outlines are basically that of acoustic guitars with a cut for accessing the upper frets. They have plenty of body beyond the bridge and the scale length that isn't quite neccessary
So the headless instruments do away with them and have less mass as a result. Plus the headstock of course which is also not needed when you can tune at the bridge. I heard it reduces neck dive. I guess it fits with the very autistic fusion/metal, almost optimization-driven music, of the kind of players it attracts

I just like the silhouette of a head-stock. It's purely an aesthetic thing.

Like, the best musical instrument in an anime is Haruhara Harukos' lefty Rickenbacker in Royal blue.

That's just the perfect shape, and the splash of blue against her red dominant design just pops.

But since I was only talking about six strings I didn't mention it. I could have mentioned Naotas' flying V, but he doesn't play it and it merges with Atomosks' EB-0 to become a double neck. So, just have to leave the rest of the FLCL instruments be.
