I gave a look into the horror hotel series and this week because I'm stupid I had a fling with the newest title in the group, "I'm A Young God, Please Raise Me". It has only 67 chapters out but already people are picking their ships so I had to know why I was seeing even weebs talk about it. The opening premise and arc are very paint by numbers. Coming into it from Our Hotel made the simple prose read exactly as you might expect from an author's 1st WN. MC gets dropped into a horror game he played, there's tasks and poorly conceived "horror" enemies, and he knows every detail, woopdedoo. Honestly I hate "killer toys in an abandoned factory" as a concept, so I was reading it like can we get to whatever the title is about. I didn't expect it to be Darkness 2.0 ProGamer Edition from the title but maybe the uniforms in fanart should have clued me in. The games are basically alien dungeons that could spill out if not cleared regularly, and gov agents go in as teams. MC is unique as he's been told congrats you're Earth's system now, and he gets system messages urging him to try buttons. At the end of arc 1 he explodes a man's head, which gets him locked up by the military as a potential alien threat. That is absolutely my shit, thank god I read to that point despite the brief disappointment of a female colead described as MC's fav agent. Even better: during his interrogation it introduces Samra, an android made from alien tech whose eyes do fun things during conversations. Through his vouching MC gets to prove himself by True Ending 3 games in a month, the 1st being zombie survival. Lame. But greatly improved by the introduction of wild bromance buddy and the contaminated edgelord who tries to murder MC most of the arc for looking decidedly nonhuman.I'd make this review shorter but fuck it, this way I'll post two images. Maybe it says something about my tastes, but a maneating mansion with 2.4m tall eyeless animal headed butlers that ruthlessly laser people to death was great. The twist here being that the NPCs remember past playthroughs, so the moment they see MC they're overly friendly, petting his head and lifting him up in the air. The butlers both have defined personalities and it was easy to get drawn into treating them as real characters the MC just needed to play along with. Small spoiler: the last arc established you do not play along with NPCs. Crow McEdgelord reprimanded MC for this and his knife fingers have much to say about it. The arc goes totally tits up with the agents trying to make a getaway with a stolen corrupted MC. As a result MC is forced to unlock an actual divine intervention and promises to find a missing NPC for the butlers.After which he's sent straight into a Call of Cthulhu type game that's navigated by text options. There MC finds the 3m tall missing NPC poorly imitating humans while sending townsfolk into deliriums with his galaxy eyes. He's affectionate towards MC for recognising he's not meant to be here, but there's a continuous tension in the fact even the MC can't look him in the face for long without going mad. I have immediately written smut fragments about them. I couldn't help myself. This novel is far more bare bones and feels lacking in confirmed setting details compared to the others, but the dynamics are fun and the author is actually withholding OP skills from the MC, even giving reasonable excuses for him not jumping at upgrades. You see, every time he does use the system for something new he experiences sudden full body pain, nosebleeds, boundless euphoria telling him he's free and he can do anything. He's unnerved by this. There's a lack of control. I love that. People are afraid of him, yet concerned for him, and he's afraid of himself.

Because of framing it as game worlds the characters aren't frightened by the things they encounter, only by the peril incurred by messing up events, making it more action based. The agents are trained soldiers with experience, so even when the zombies are gross they grin and bear it to get the job done. The most fear anyone shows is when the MC acts up, because he's an anomaly. The third arc drummed up more suspense so I'm hoping the author has found their footing and will keep that up in further arcs.Something I couldn't fit the character limit was that the android character struck me as a housewife type, then I went to look at fanart and discovered he's universally assumed to have a dead wife ponytail and droop eyes. IH is a traditional hunter/dungeons setting since it maintains the ranks and skills on every character, while Young God is just taking the status windows and leaking dungeon dimensions part and slotting GSGW style individual worlds with different imagery and play rules in where the dungeons should be. The status windows are mostly to assign quests and alert characters of their game progress, plus an inventory when allowed but not every game has one. MC's abilities mean he has an inventory screen even outside of the games, and this is just my theory, but I'm pretty sure the "annoying" messages he gets flooded with are actually his own subconscious relaying impulses or detecting future events - powers that he has not yet learnt to control. For example, he can send message windows but not assign quests, except one time he walks into danger and all the agents get a rescue quest written similarly to the messages he gets.I'm getting distracted but IH actually bothers showing an alien society and making jokes about the differences between planets, Young God feels more vague on that so far. There's an external alien threat but it's only manifested as meteorites that contain game dimensions and the cosmic horror of the 3m tall not-Dominic.
