I just watched Princess Mononoke for the first time. First Studio Ghibli movie I've seen and first anime movie I've seen. Also my second ever anime.Best movie ever made. Who here has seen it? Does anybody dislike it for some reason? Also, San is a baddie.
>>288745163>Also, San is a baddie.correct
>>288745377Lady Eboshi > San
>>288745450Crowd of Iron Town women who flirt with Ashitaka > Eboshi > San > Kaya
>>288745163Just about everyone here has seen it. It gets a lot of flak for being "entry level" but that epithet has some truth to it.
>>288745163>just watched Princess Mononoke for the first time>first anime movie I've seen>my second ever animeSo... you've watched one tv anime and Princess Mononoke... And that's it? And you already claim>Best movie ever made?Watch more anime.
>>288745163It’s the best ghibli movie for sure but it’s not perfect. They should have killed off the girlboss character and then tried to make peace with whoever took her place
>>288745163Welcome to /a/ and animePlease lurk some more before embarrassing yourselfSince you are a BASED Ty Lee gooner, I'll recommend some of my good anime for you to watchK-on, bocchi the rock, spy x family, frieren, cowboy bepbop, sora no woto, girl's last tour, girls band cry, clannad+as, haruhi (broadcast order), awajima hyakkei, yuru camp, dragon maidI watched Princess Mononoke for the first time about 2 years ago. It was in threaters for the whateverth anniversary. Was my first ghibli film despite having been watching anime seriously for maybe 8 years at this point. I was going to use it as a springboard into watching the whole ghibli library, but I haven't gotten around to it. Just lazy is all. I thought it was a very good movie. The animation and sound design/music was constantly high teir, despite it being quite quiet in the theater. I think that's just because they didn't upgrade the sound for imax like they did with the visuals. Regardless, it was visual bliss from start to finish. I liked the story, but can't recall the exact details of it other than the theme of >le industrialization le bad>le nature le goodNor can I recall the character names beyond the TITular girl. So the narrative did not leave that much of an impact on me, but I still came out of it really appreciating the artistry that went into making the filmWhat anime are you going to watch next newfriend? If you ask for a specific genre or type of show I might have a rec for you, but my taste leans heavily towards SoL/cgdct, so it might be too based for your puny mind to comprehend
>>288745163Carry on with ghibli, theyve got bangers
>>288745163Yeah it's kino. My only complaint is I felt the sexual tension between them was unresolved.
>288745163Who the fuck let this casul onto our board?
>>288745673Yes, I watched NGE about a year ago and watched Mononoke yesterday. Currently watching AOT as well but I didn’t count it because I’m early in the show(just finished Trost section) and also I plan to watch Death Note and some other animes in the future. i was not really interested in anime until i started watching NGE after a friend recommended it so my knowledge is limited
>>288745673He can watch everything else and he still won't be wrong.
>>288747384This is the list of anime I plan to watch in the future. Like I said I am new to anime so most of these are gonna be basic.BleachFullmetal AlchemistDeath NoteAOT (watching now)Your Lie in AprilMonsterTokyo GhoulSpirited AwayHowls Moving CastleMy Neighbor Totoroif you guys have any good suggestions lmk
>>288745163This Anon: >>288745673 beat me to it, but if you google something like "watch these before posting/asking for recommendations on /a/" there's like a dozen or so different cheat sheets that'll tell you the best 20-50 or so animes in the past 25 years.
>>288747710I suggest watching a bunch of movies and OVAs before getting into TV series. Pretty much everything from Ghibli is a masterpiece; if you liked Mononokehime so much you should just go straight to Nausicaa and Laputa. Since NGE got you interested in the first place, the Gunbuster OVAs are a natural place to go before heading to Gundam and Ideon.
>>288745163Not even the superior Mononoke
>>288747710Those are all entry level and are alright I guess. I haven't seened some, I have seened others. For your own sake stop watching AoT after s3. Not gonna spoil it beyond telling you they Game of Thrones'd the ending. I assume you have watched game of thrones because you're a newfaggot and probably frequent /tv/You watched EoE, right?I know of atleast one anon who was a retard and literal skipped EoE...
>>288747710helo newfreind I have already given you my list of recs >>288746162 pls (You) them so I know you've atleast take notice :3
>>288745163Glad you liked it anon. It's one of my favorites as well.
>>288745163>Does anybody dislike it for some reason?Ohhh! Me! Me! Fuck this movie.I found it extremely annoying how the movie essentially falls apart in the second half. Almost every scene after Ashitaka confesses and falls unconscious was straight up maddening to me.>essentially dropping the Iron Town plotline, turning the nature vs progress theme entirely onesided>turning Ashitaka's curse, aka the driving point of the plot until then, into a nonissue without any fanfare>no good music after the Ashitaka / mama wolf convo at night>San being wishy-washy for no reason, changing her attitude towards Ashitaka 180 every other scene, inb4 realistic female portrayal>mama wolf going moron, no excuses>two best characters (Eboshi and the priest) lose all complexity by the climax>wolf brothers just letting San and -Ashitaka- turn them into glorified mounts>Ashitaka going full sage in the climax, dispensing the nature spirit lore to FUCKING SAN of all people when she had to explain to him everything since the midpoint of the movie WHAT THE FUCK>frankly, the animation in the action climax isn't all that amazing>and in the end Miyazaki can't even commit to the relationship status between the two leads>"maybe I'll visit sometime">seriouslyMononoke starts very strong and builds the expectations high. Then the only worthwhile moments in the latter half are Ashitaka/wolf convo, Eboshi getting drastic weight reduction and the final scene with Eboshi. Best girl btw. I'd rather watch a movie about her than San. Thank you for reading my blogpost.
>>288749364This might bait but I will bite anyways. Why is nausicaa so high on the tier list? Isn't that just a proto-script for princess mononoke. Same themes, similar character archetypes etc. etc.
>>288749601>This might baitI swear I'm serious. I feel particularly vicious towards Mononoke, because it really -should- have been very good. Such a frustrating watch.>Why is nausicaa so high on the tier list? Isn't that just a proto-script for princess mononoke.I feel like Mononoke is a watered down Nausicaa. A case of not understanding the assignment. Mind you, I watched Mononoke a few years earlier then Nausicaa, so this might colour my perception.>Same themes, similar character archetypes etc. etc.And yet they are done so much better. Nausicaa has the nature vs technology conflict, and clearly takes the side of the former. But it still takes time to show humanity leaving at a certain technological eco-friendly level as a desirable, conveninent and, most importantly, pretty damn cool. There is a clear distinction in which kind of progres is harmful.Mononoke instead raises a fairly interesting point in the functioning of Irontown, which is damaging to nature, but allows humanity to live with a certain level of dignity and predictability compared to San's savagery and Ashitaka's tribe at the mercy of demons... And then swiftly ignores the point going straight into "pure untouched nature = good".I also find Nausicaa's setting and the direction of action far more imaginative and compelling. As for the characters, Nausicaa and Azbel are extremely consistent in their motivations and actions in a way that San and Ashitaka could only dream of.I might actually like Eboshi a bit more than the somewhat generic evil redhead, and I like the character designs of Mononoke more, so two points there. ...I kinda have expected putting Earthsea in the second tier to be the point of contention here kek.
>>288745163keep watching ghibli stuff; chihiro and grave of fireflies are great. some good "entry level" anime: cowboy bebop, ttgl, champloo, monster, clannad>>288749364>earthsea second tier>kaguya, hotaru and mononoke that lowHow
>>288745450Couldn't disagree more and simultaneously care less. Glad you appreciate Lady Eboshi, but San speaks a thousand times more to my heart.
>>288750347>earthsea second tierAh, there we go.I can only say that I might have watched it at a time in my life I've found Arren intensely relatable. Yeah, not proud of that but still. I loved the entire cast each in their own way, in fact. The pacing is pretty damn bad, but it still logically sets up lore and plot points and resolves most of them by the end in a way I found satisfying. I also find it to be among the most gorgeous Ghibli movies visually.I have also never read anything by LeGuin other than her opinion about this particular movie. Having no preconceptions about the story and characters certainly helped.>>kaguya, hotaru and mononoke that lowMononoke I've already blogposted about. Hotaru no Haka I found similarly frustrating, except it was more consistently annoying rather than frontloading good stuff like Mononoke. Like, I know what they were going for. I suppose I just could not make myself care about the tragedy of the lead kids' fate. If I laugh at young children suffering, then something went wrong with the storytelling.Kaguya is a very decent movie, and I would gladly recommend it to just about everyone. It's just that the bar Ghibli set for their output is simply that high. In the end I appreciated the movie more for its art direction rather than enjoyed the experience as a whole, hence it being fairly low.
>>288747710BleachFullmetal AlchemistDeath NoteAOT (watching now)Your Lie in AprilMonsterI'm 37 and I've never seen any of these, but I can name all the girls from μ's from Love Live!
>>288745163I watched it many years ago and only watched it for the second time a few days ago. Beautiful animation, I like that they made the humans actually fairly understandable for the most part instead of just being giga evil for no reason. Otherwise I think it's just fine mostly.>>288747710Everything Satoshi Kon made. Personally Paprika and Paranoia Agent are my favorites. They're more in the Evangelion area, more serious dramas, discussing societal issues and dealing with human misery, and they take good advantage of animation's ability to show fantastic things. I don't really recommend Bleach, or pretty much anything with hundreds of episodes. The production requirements tend to mean there are some serious quality issues, and despite being adaptations, they often have a problem of catching up to the manga mid run, so they have to make original material (filler) to pad out the run time. The filler is essentially always garbage. A lot of people, even here do still watch them though, so I guess feel free to give it a try, but personally I will always choose to read the manga for long runners like that. Everything Ghibli is worth watching except Tales from Earthsea and Earwig and the Witch. My favorites are Kiki's Delivery Service and From Up On Poppy Hill. Forgive me for using these words, but there's no other way to say it. The vibes are immaculate.
OP should watch Neon Genesis Evangelion.
>>288747710>BleachDont do it>Fullmetal AlchemistWatch fmab>Death Notepretty decent>AOT (watching now)turn off your brain after the timeskip>Your Lie in Aprilpretty decent drama, but this is the drama medium you should check better stuff like clannad>Monstergood>Tokyo GhoulDONT WATCH THE ANIME>Spirited Awaygreat>Howls Moving Castlegood>My Neighbor TotoroCLASSIC>if you guys have any good suggestions lmkFor starters, Bebop is a must. If you enjoy aot check HxH
>>288747710I'm not going to tell you not to watch it. A ton of people really like it. But Howl's Moving Castle is the single most dogshit adaptation I have ever seen. Howl and Sophie are profoundly uninteresting characters compared to the book, Howl's relationship with Calcifer is destroyed, making Mrs Pentstemmon the villain is just plain baffling (I'm not spoiling things fyi, she's called something else in the movie), and most annoyingly, it's Miyazaki ignoring a bunch of themes from the book in favor of inserting more war is bad shit he has been doing for his entire career. Unbearable arrogance to do that shit, as far as I'm concerned.
>>288751185Oh yeah. I feel like the changes to the Witch of the Waste had potential to be interesting at least, but it just doesn't work out, so it's yet another change in an adaptation with way too fucking many changes.
I’ve never used 4chan so I dont know how to reply to messages but I’m gonna reply to some of the stuff you said here.I have watched EOE. I have NOT seen GOT. I like fantasy stuff like that but GOT just doesnt interest me.Thanks for the tierlist. Thought that was a pfp at first lolI’ve heard of Bebop before if it’s the same one I’m thinking of. (Cowboy Bebop?) Will definitely watch it. Also heard of HxH but I thought it was an MHA style anime, I’ll look into that morePaprika I also have on my list and forgot to include.I have not heard of Nausicaa or Laputa, will check them out. Thanks for the recommendations guys!
>>288750249>>288749601Nausicaa and Mononoke have only very superficial thematic resemblances, and even that they handle massively differently.

>>288751523It could be a shitpost.
>>288745163>Who here has seen it? Does anybody dislike it for some reason? My American brain cannot comprehend the Japanese brain. Why does Jigo and Lady Eboshi get to be the villain, sacrifice a bunch of her people in a stupid fight against spirits, just so they can kill some spirit and get some trophy. Then they survive and get away with all their crimes. Hundreds of their people died for their goals, and they just kind of give up and get away scott free. I the West a story like that MUST conclude with the villains being soundly defeated, instead of just wandering away after doing so much evil.
>>288751921I gave no suggestions as to what behavior he should engage in, actually. I told him what other people do, and why. I don't care what he does.
>>288745163It is the best Ghibli film, imo.Basically what James Cameron's Avatar should have been.
>>288752333It's because the story is a Marxist parable. Lady Eboshi is not a simple villain, she supplants the old feudal system with the productive forces of capital. Capitalism is seen as an improvement over medieval exploitation in that she provides benefits for her workers and healthcare for lepers (contrasted with the samurai at the start who mercilessly slaughter peasants and cast out the lepers to die). The contradiction in the story comes from the ecological critique being applied on top of that class conflict.
>>288753337also female empowerment and such, at the cost of devastating the ecosystem and destroying habitat
>>288752333Jigo is fucked when the emperor finds out forest sprite is dead.Lady Eboshi loses her arm so she will never use a gun again.

Lady Eboshi did die in a sense, her arrogance having finally been humbled.
>>288746659The movie should have ended with a heavily pregnant San being cockslammed into labor by Ashitaka

>>288750497That's a whole lot of cope for "I just want to fuck the dragon girl".Don't worry, you're in good company pal.
>they go their separate ways in the endAlways trigger my autism
>>288750429San strikes me as somone who'd gladly kill a child's parents in front of them, but scream foul if the kid returns the favor and blow her brother's skull off.>>288754246What would've been really poetic would've been San losing a foot for all the people she's killed in return.
>>288750249I prefer Nausicaa too, but weak antagonists produce a weak message. They're not wrong because they're opposing nature. Something's trying to kill them and they're trying to kill it back. That's not opposing nature, that's nature 101. They're just bad at it. They did no research, made no back-up plans, and risked everything with fingers crossed. So the message stops being "they shouldn't have done that" and becomes "they shouldn't have been stupid". And I, the viewer, have always known that I'm not stupid. So I have nothing at all to learn. Just look at the God Warrior. Mankind's military prowess made manifest, bested by nature regardless. A strong message. If not for the fact he was dying before the battle began.
>>288757334In the manga it was killed by an even stronger show of humanity's destructive potential, AFTER maturing, so it doesn't really count.
>>288757286Nah, she'd be like Askeladd and treat the kids like Thorfinn, except she'd grow to love them.
>>288745163Glad you liked it, also one of the very first animated media I've ever seen, and it has set a standard forever.
