I am personally happy to let the franchise rest as it is, but if they are going to insist on making more Evangelion eventually you reach a point where you need to find a new story to tell within that franchise, and I think this is the time to do it. Yoko Taro breaking new ground with a new cast of characters would be the ideal way to push the boundaries of what makes something Evangelion, and if the experiment succeeds you can do other spinoffs or AUs in the future. Other timelines/worlds following other pilots in alternate Second Impact affected Earths, fighting new Angels. Or a new setting that is placed after End of Evangelion in a post-post apocalyptic world where humanity has rebuild and now their entire civilization has been built on top of this incredibly powerful but dangerous AT-field based technology. Hell, maybe even a further future thing where AT-Field based ships are going out into space and finding out where Adam and Lilith came from and whats happened with other worlds that had seeds of life land on them, etc. Just... not the Tokyo-3 crew again. You can't retread that same old ground forever.

There was notable backlash to Mari after the fourth film in Japan. The whole 'Mari is just Anno's wife because she's such a non fucking character all she is is a cardboard stand in' comes from a blogpost on note that went absolutely viral in Japan and then made its way to /a/ and then English speaking twitter when it got translated. At the end of the day though the film made money and it was better received than the 3rd film, so I don't think they really cared.
