I think the issue is more that the main series is telling a slightly different story than YO, and that story makes it harder to maintain the impact of goblins. The main series is telling an underlying story of GS healing a bit and learning he can find people who'll party with him and can do stuff outside of slaying goblins 24/7. To that end stuff basically works out. Established characters don't get killed or gobbed, Newly introduced characters who get gobbed and rescued recover enough to move on with their lives. Makes it hard for the series to replicate the same impact of Warrior and Wizard dying, and Fighter being beaten and raped to the point her career as an adventurer ends before it starts and its implied she'll never mentally recover enough to lead a normal life. Year One on the other hand is taking advantage of telling the story of how GS got to how he was when we first met him in the main series. As such a ally and potential friend in Elf Swordswoman dies in the first mercy kill in the series since Wizard, and Rhea Bard gets captured by goblins well after her introduction, and then immediately violated. It brings back a lot more of the impact and threat of what GS is dealing with.
