The problem was that he had no real idea of what to do with that idea and then wrote a long and winding mystery plot that really didn't go anywhere because no one cared about the reveal.

Denji was just in stasis, and I don't even remember what Asa's motivation was. Everything after that Aquarium and the fake Chainsaw Men is so meandering to me. I basically can't remember what happened or why. And it was clearly written into a corner where they couldn't figure out a way to have Denji vs Asa logically resolve. And so it became Devilman, but less poignant.
Flash in the pan. This manga is the first one I've seen in real time serve as a lesson why some manga need to just end after ~50 chapters and stop there.
