I know this is hard for you to get anon because you pretty much translate based on what you want characters to sound like rather than what the original characters to sound like and your Japanese is so poor that you don't notice anyway. But that character was speaking in an unusually formal register of Japanese, not just in that panel, but all the time, that's the role language of that character and that character's identity, you know, that thing you always blatantly ignore when you translate because you, ironically, think it doesn't “sound Japanese” or something for people to have it, and also because you just barely notice.

Anon, learn to translate what the lines are saying opposed to what you personally think is appropriate. It's especially hilarious when you claim to be “faithful to Japanese culture” but it's so clear you don't understand the idiosyncrasies of Japanese fiction in terms of role language.
>>
>>288830703
Impossible, it's too funny reminding someone trying to set rules for translation that they can't even translate into English properly themselves.

>>288830710
>that character was speaking in an unusually formal register of Japanese

>Scannie doesn't realize there is no formal register of conversational English where "it's sixteen hours" would be appropriate, and his shitlation page is quite likely the only example of it being used in an English "conversation"
>(before scannie skims again, note the 'conversational', you don't have a conversation with the BBC speaking clock service)
>Scannie further doesn't realize "it's sixteen hours" serves no purpose but to jar and confuse the reader, while broadcasting his ESL powerlevel for all to see

It is, and this is where you're wrong.

And even if it weren't. It's honestly such a retarded thing to use as your one single argument. If your literal almighty one argument you need to keep bringing up is literally
>Oh noex, you used something that the BBC uses to role-language some character that speaks in highly formal Japanese as cartoonish character role language, what a grave sin of translation.

Anon, I make people use Shakespearean English or complete persiflages of chavspeak all the time. It's cartoonish, a stereotype, and over the top, just like the original lines were and it's a really, really, really stupid thing to keep coming back to this particular point as your trump card and just makes you look pathetic.

Anon, when this discussion started I gave so many tweets and forum posts already where it was used. I'm not sure what you're talking about. They just all “didn't count” or something which apparently extends to the BBC
https://x.com/eaonns/status/2064217775908827149
https://x.com/J1603Kevin/status/2058490406489235705
https://x.com/unkleturd/status/2054792145639526405

All these people live in either the U.S.A. or the U.K, obviously I could go far further., You can search for yourself with “at 16 hours” or “at 15 hours”, or “it's 16 hours” and you get a bunch of results. We had this dance 2 years back already.
>Concession accepted. :^)
No anon, when you still look ridiculous even if what you allege is true, and what you allege is false on top of that, you're pretty stupid.

Even if all these things that are true are somehow false:
>the BBC uses this
>It's really easy to find forum posts made by native speakers who use it

Then we would still be left with that I just once made a slightly awkward sounding too literal translation that isn't /close/ to as ridiculous as “he confessed to me” and that's apparently the best you can muster, but all those things aren't false, they're true, so you don't have that.

Which makes it really weird that you focus on this, because there are actually cases of “I entered the bath” in my old translations. It's so weird that you focus on this particular thing when there legitimately is some strange usage of honorifics in my translations. I'm sorry but people referring to doctors and politicians with “master”, which I tend to do is a lot more unusual for English than “The meeting is at 16 hours.”

Oh yeah, the second is on closer inspection about the definition of overtime in the contracts being set at 16 hours probab.y

The first and second definitely aren't though. In theory with the first one could argue it's about setting the timer when the stream starts at 16 hours but that makes no sense, the timer obviously is obviously set at 0 at the start and the stream starts at 16:00.

The third one could at best be a typo for “eating at the 16th hour”, as in the 16th hour since the fast started, but I don't think that was intended.

>>288831535
Anon, however you're going to put it, referring to a writer or doctor with “master” isn't as weird as “sensei” in English.

Anon, no
>Going to start the timer at 16 hours tomorrow. Discounted subs for up to 24. Emblems every 5 subs, and I'll probably go longer than 16 regardless of support.
This means the timer will start at 16:00, when the clock hits that time. It doesn't make sense otherwise, the timer is not going to be set at that time at the start because it's a 16 hour stream attempt and that person pledges to at least make 16 hours, which would make no sense if the timer were to start at that point.

It's someone living in Texas who's going to do a 24 hour stream, starting at 16:00. That's the only interpretation that makes sense in that context and you're reaching.

The second one was indeed misinterpreted by me in quick reading, but that's not a timespan either, that's that the definition of overwork in the contract is going to be set at 16 hours. It's technically ambiguous but that interpretation makes more sense.

That is some weird ass interpretation.
It obviously means the timer for the the 24 hour is starting at 16:00 and that that person intends.

Why even say “tomorrow” with it otherwise, it's announcing the time the stream will start.

But fine, let's even be generous and accept that absolutely wild interpretation and come with even more unambiguous things:
>stream begin at 14 hours EDT
Canadian, and a timezone behind it. How are you going to salvage this one now?
I searched with time zones now to make it completely unambiguous:
https://x.com/ABMNetwork/status/1632792171244838913
>Join the premiere - and live chat - on Friday at 16 hours GMT! [American account]
https://x.com/Transctimes/status/1509089229753798659
>The train, which is reported to have departed Abuja to Kaduna at about 16 hours GMT
[transcontinental times, I guess that doesn't count now because it's an international newspaper right?]
https://x.com/brcinigeria/status/930712756797440001
>Part of our activities to mark #WorldChildrensDay is a #Tweetchat with

And yeah, these tweets are from 2017 because when you search for something as specific as “16 hours GMT” there's obviously not going to be much.

>>288831823
There is an admittedly blurry line between keeping the culture intact and translationese and I do feel using “master” here is on the edge. I don't object to translating it to “Dr. Jäger” either, but Japanese people refer to artists and doctors with “master”.

No, they refer to them as sensei, and translating it in the context of a doctor as 'master' is completely incorrect and doesn't work in English.

The entire point of the story is that it's a serious drama about someone from a rich family who feels pressured to conform into that but wants to break free and the character's overtly formal speech patterns reflect that.

probably will just throw them on ex but I've never been a raw provider before, is there anything i should check my scanner for to make sure it's not dogpoopoo

It's wrong by the way. It doesn't announce it like that, it does it with “universal coordinated time”, not “GMT”, which goes to show, but hey, you can always try every single bot until one says what you want and then quote that one right?

Scan in .tiff for best quality and brush the scanner bed and page after each scan so you get a minimum amount of dust marks getting on it

Yeah, so it's used again.
A lot of slang arises from archaic funny things. Saying “to vex” is pretty popular in the U.K. right now for “to piss off”. Was once archaic and obscure and now people are just using it and it gained a fairly slangy tone in a short time as a consequence.

You've been told ITT and for years that sure, the very specific contexts of a speaking clock or announcements with tinezones or similar may word it in a fashion such as that. Your disingenuousness in constantly pretending otherwise is pathetic.

And no one cares how srsbsnss your JCs are, that still doesn't make them international shortwave radio time service announcers or military commandos. Maybe you could get away with it in GuP or Upotte! or the such.

You're basically the language equivalent of a tranny, pretending that chopping your dick off and replacing it with an axe wound makes you a real JC (despite the fact you're speaking with the grizzled male voice of a comnando while telling the time).

No, you people kept denying that too. In fact, someone in this chat is denying that the BBC is even saying it because ChatGPT says it, even though the very same ChatGPT says the BBC is saying it when given another prompt.
Stop being so stupid. It looks bad on you that this thing is your weird trump card, most of you even got the context wrong because you actually seem to think that a serious drama is some virginslop. Perhaps some random anons understandably thought there was no use case for it as again the valid contexts are so VERY LIMITED, but no, you have been told by many since that first thread that yes, military/scientific timekeeping/etc may be the only semi-acceptable cases (semi, as generally they'd either use hundred-hours military style, or specify the timezone, in most of those cases still).

Oh look more disingenuous lies. You delivered three ancient tweets from spics and pastatalians that actually remotely matched your claimed usage. Everything else you delivered before that was you misinterpreting very basic English with it used in other forms (e.g. specifying an AMOUNT of time).

But the fact you misinterpreted those earlier 10 or so tweets really does more to show your mastery of English than anything I could ever post, so thank you.

Query though, are we still at the point of “No native speaker would say this.” or is it now “It's okay for formal business announcements and it's totally plausible that the BBC would, but it's too formal for cute JK's in a cute girl's doing cute things setting”?

No native speaker would say this. The only time it is is to arbitrarily cater to ESLs. You still use it wrong without the time zone attached to signify this one specific instance of use and confuse even non retarded ESLs, let alone natives.

>>
>Being so retarded he needs basic coherence explained to him

>No native speaker would say this
Are you getting it at last? No native speaker would say this in any normal setting. The only time you're going to hear anything close to it is maybe a military scenario (where it's essentially always suffixed with 'hundred-hours' or the minutes or the such) or a public broadcast (i.e. NOT a JC in a room) over the airwaves or the like where they will essentially always specify a timezone also, (and even then it's quite rare to hear it stated in such a way, even in broadcasts).

>You do realize you're disagreeing with others in this thread who claim that it's supposedly only about the “JK” thing right?
Not that anon but I'm the one who's mentioned the JCs/JKs thing throughout this thread, and no you're being a disingenuous lying Hollander again.

It is most definitely NOT -only- about the JCs/JKs saying it. Again there are only a handful of very specific scenarios where such a style of stating the time is used (and even then, generally with suffixes you didn't use) which have repeatedly been spoonfed to you.

I'm merely highlighting the JC/JK aspect for your dense ass because they're so far removed from any of those scenarios that it adds a whole extra layer of ridiculousness to it.

You think I MTL and paywall shit? You think anyone in this thread does? I know you probably don't read many translations, because why would you when you can read the raws, but that's exactly why you need to stop giving into doomerism over the worst case scenarios that catch your attention. They aren't representative of the whole and there were always duwangs and incorporated rancors back in the day. In fact I wish these guerilla MTL snipers looking to leech off any popular series were real because then I could save myself some time and drop the one I'm working on. Instead they show too much respect to a scanlator that puts in effort to let me quit. And I keep putting in that effort because the manga still deserves promotion from an audience that otherwise couldn't have given it a boost, no matter how limited. That's the spirit of the scene and it's probably not dead in you either.

But really while there are a handful of people out there still releasing stuff of decent quality, you can't really claim it's anywhere near what it was in 2010s.

You get the impression that it's causing more harm than good. Readers have gotten accustomed to getting everything for free and are completely unwilling to spend money on a series, even if it gets axed as a consequence. Official translations struggle to find customers or awareness that they exist. Even the folks that learned Japanese still demand they get everything for free. Translators that are supposed to spread something they love don't even care enough to buy it themselves.

What do you think about re-working other groups' old translations to give it a more uniform quality? I mean, for ancient series like Touch by Adachi Mitsuru, the translations were done by several groups more than 20 years ago. But the raws quality and the consistency were all over the place. So I wonder if it's a good etiquette to take other people's translations, tweak them, fix their typos and typset them onto better raws. Same thing about /a/'s beloved series like Yuugami-kun wa Tomodachi ga Inai. Some of its early chapters were badly typesetted iirc.

Isn't Yuugami licensed? I see it as a lot of effort for little gain, most readers don't care enough to read things a second time unless the previous version was horrendous. I'd rather you offer your free will to a group that works on series you enjoy and help bring new releases to the world.
>>
>>288866275
if you want to
I think the main reason people don't bother doing it is mostly because no one is going to read them and it's a lot of effort for nothing
but if you enjoy doing it and do it out of passion, I don't see any reason you shouldn't
I'd probably double check the translations though, you don't know how good the translators were and it's a good chance they were pretty terrible if it's more than ten years old when the scene was smaller. there used to be a lot of guesslations back then
>>
>>288866275
It really doesn't feel worth it since the old scans are the ones that will be spread around instead of the new ones. It's just how it is since they were made first years ago.
>>
>>288866767
if a manga gets official translations, you can be pretty sure that no one is ever going to read the scanlations ever again
>>
>>288866792
Yeah, but that's official.
>>
>>288829932
I'm trying to finish a 47-pages one-shot this week.
>>
>>288866792
Hmm, I don't know, I tried to get into Initial D, thought the fan translation was awful, so I took a look at the official TL and thought the localized names was off-putting. I eventually switched back to the fan translation. Haven't finished it though.

I also hate those old comic book style of localization like in Akira and Blade of the Immortal where they mirrored the manga so Americans can read it from left to right. Made me want to puke.

>I also hate those old comic book style of localization like in Akira and Blade of the Immortal where they mirrored the manga so Americans can read it from left to right. Made me want to puke.
yeah, but those translations are pretty much 25 years old or older, and several of them have gotten proper releases afterwards
it's been like 25 years since I started reading manga scanlations downloaded with emule or edonkey or whatever it was, but I still remember getting figuring out and getting used to reading the "wrong way"
that and getting used to fan service I get. I still struggle with panty shots out of nowhere

It took me like minutes. With digital scans, it helped that you could see only one page at the time. It isn't the same with physical manga tho.
>that and getting used to fan service I get. I still struggle with panty shots out of nowhere
Just read some hentai and random panty shots will stop fazing you whatsoever, same as random nudity, etc.

Anyone know how to rip from DMM? There’s a particular store bonus I’d like to download, but NutAID or whatever it’s called doesn’t descramble them.
>>
>>288829932
Nope. Still looking for paid work. I can just read the stuff I love in Japanese, why give a shit about secondaries that pretend to be Japanese but can't be bothered to learn the language?
>>

did you try enabling fix images under the options? it fixed a lot of sites, not sure if it works on dmm though

>I don't see a Fix Images option, and any of the alternative options didn't seem to do anything for it.
I don't remember exactly, but you click the questions thing and get three options, and the second one is fix images/descramble images or something. you have to reload the page for it to work after turning it on
it works on most sites, so I'm a bit surprised if it doesn't work on DMM
>>
>>288871982
No. I rip almost everything from them. For all-ages manga you normally get the same quality as BW or Kobo. Make sure it's sold as EPUB形式 (dmme) and not dmmb形式, but I've only seen that with a handful of old KTC releases.
DMM tends to have better sales with the combination of point-return and coupons. You need a Japanese IP for purchases but a standard VPN works.
>>
>>288872081
I’ve already made the purchases (and it is dmme), though rereading the panda post, I’m realizing the store bonus likely isn’t included in the epub, it isn’t when reading online, it’s a separate thing. And that’s what I need to rip.
>>

>>288872128
In my experience the store bonus is always in the epub. It's not like Bookwalker where they have a separate category for them.
>>
>>288870734
When you're starting out, you're thinking half in English anyway so writing it down takes you practically no extra time or effort.
Once you get to the level where you can read fully immersed, translation becomes a burden.

I complained about MTL slops on exhentai and how mods do nothing about it and my account got banned. And this is just some off-hand comments in a random MTL slop gallery, I guess some mods just got their fee-fees hurt.

>>
>>288872696
>My mtl is better than your human tl because i noe japanase
this but unironically
using mtl is far better than the novice guesslators we used to have five years ago, they just made things up
I don't really know why people think that manga translators are better than mtl, the majority is like n4-n5 and just out to learn Japanese by translating manga, there's barely any experienced translators in the scanlation scene
sure if translators were experienced and good and did a better job than mtl, it would be fair for people to shun mtl
but it's not. mtl is better than the average scanlation translator
>>
What is is about manga specifically that attracts these kind of "elitist" shit eaters that lash out if people don't let them pretend they're enjoyers of fine dining.

People don't defend shit anime subs and having recently dipped my toes into gookwa, readers there accept that "fan" translations (paywalled translation factories) are mid at best no one whiteknights for them if someone is shitting on them.
>>
I'll take obviously wrong over plausibly right (but still wrong)
>>
>>288872750
if you actually cared about anime and manga you'd have learned japanese a long time ago anyway
in the end it'd just fast consumption junk that's easily forgotten. nothing really stands out in an oversaturated market like this.
>>
>>288872786
My point is that manga attracts people that defend bad translations in far grater numbers then any other medium I've been interested in.
>>
Another point of consideration is that a mediocre TL is more harmful than an outright bad TL, the former will make the readers think the manga is sauceless when in reality it’s the mid script bleeding nuances and tones away. Readers of a bad TL will know it’s the TL’s fault, not that the mangaka is a shit writer.
>>
>>288872811
People defend bad game translations all the time.
>>
>>288872811
Without that bad translation they'd have no access. You don't have to agree with "something is better than nothing" but it's not hard to understand.

>>288872841
Most manga readers haven't opened a book since high school so abysmal diction, characters all speaking exactly the same, and lifeless dialogue made up of trite translation shortcuts still reads like fire to them.
>>
>>288872886
>You don't have to agree with "something is better than nothing" but it's not hard to understand.
Yeah, there's a lot of wannabe elitists here saying let them eat cake. Even though we're in a place full of assburgers, even they should understand that for normal people they just want to be able to read it.
It's like a guy with a ferrari saying that other people should walk instead of driving a corolla or a civic. It's pant on head retarded.
>>
>>288872932
Everyone can MTL for themselves, all AI free plans are sufficient for that purpose.
There's no need to waste internet space with them.
>>
This is unrelated to manga scanlation, but I recently re-watched Nichijou using Doki's subtitles, and now I understand why they were hated.

Like the bit where the vice-principal plays a catch with his grandson, and then the grandson throws a sinker/シンカー, they translated it as "is he a pro?"
>>
>>288873052
Doki is still hated though, they're the ones running Mangadex if you haven't noticed.
>>
>>288873052
That's a good translation. Everyone gets the punchline right away not just losers that are into baseball.
>>
>>288844134
Fuck 'em and make it a learning opportunity. Look at the average comment thread and be in awe of their lack of reading comprehension. Might as well force them to open a dictionary. Though who I am kidding, they'll just use their favourite slopbot.

To be honest, the majority of Japanese in manga is really nothing to write home about.

For years I had a Wacom Intuos 4M. Then when I got a job, I decided to buy a newer Pro L. And I very quickly regretted spending that money. Almost everything about it is just a worse experience than my almost 16 year old 4M. The buttons are harder to find by touch; the pen sensitivity is somehow worse and it feels like toy quality; the surface of the tablet feels designed to slow me down and wear down the nibs as fast as possible; and you can no longer decide on which end you plug it in as it only has one socket. The only upside is that it came with an angled USB-C cable instead of mini USB.

If anyone's looking to buy a Wacom tabled, I really recommend to go for an older 4 or 5. Even used ones should be fine. Don't even consider the new Pro series.
