Which is why I think it's on purpose and not any sort of limitation they're working within. But it's always funny to see prerendered animation look worse than what you can see in real time 3D rendering like in video games. Imagine going back to 1995 and telling people that video games would eclipse at least some prerendered 3D in the future. Obviously they're not touching stuff like Pixar still.

Maybe animating to that quality is too much of a workload too. It's difficult to tell if CGI is being used out of necessity or just because they think it will look better or is "standard". You sometimes get anime where some things are CG at one time but 2D at other times, so they obviously can do it 2D but just choose not to. And I'm not that deep into their budget or schedule to know if it's part of the reason.
