Modern yugioh could never. It would be way too immersion breaking for some dude with a post covid deck like ghosttrick or fallen of albaz creaming himself over DM cards like they're still the most powerful yugioh monsters, when his own deck could probably OTK whatever GOAT deck he faced.
Inb4 Blue Eyes actually has a pretty good deck in master duel or inb4 everybody in the DM era knew the strongest monsters were the Chaos monsters.

Definitely worth reading. The manga are a lot more concise and structured compared to their anime counterparts, even if they never reach the same heights. As a character I find him just serviceable, but he was given cool dueling scenes and presentation which makes up for it. He at least doesn't really veer way off the rails anywhere and is understandable

This is why Kaito is the best rival. The previous three were all cool characters but all losers. Kaiba lost to Yugi in the first episode and was always in his shadow. Jack was the same. Manjoume was a great character but a massive jobber.

Kaito instantly shifted the tone of the story. Until his appearance, Astral was the best in the series and the only reason Yuma struggled was because he was an idiot who didn't listen. Here Astral got outclassed and now he needs to get better, while the fear of death made Yums grow up and actually look to improve alongside Astral.

On top of that, the story was mostly bad guy of the week with a number card. Kaito is now a looming threat and adds a new layer to the story. He instantly pulled out two numbers which already makes him far superior to any other number holder until now, then throws them away for an even more powerful monster. And on top of that, his monster is an xyz killer. He's also a more compelling character by virtue of Haruto, while the previous rivals were all just selfish jackasses

And this is his impact in the first 15 episodes by the way. Meanwhile Kaiba jobbed in episode 1, Manjoume jobbed to Judai and Misawa, Jack robbed Yusei like a petty thief and lost to Yusei even while using his stolen ace monster.

Kaiser was another good one since he actually beat Judai but Kaito had more impact overall (at this point in the story)

I never said he was stronger than the other rivals though. I said he's a better character because he actively impacts the main character and pushes him to be better. The others don't do that - they can't do that when they're constantly playing second fiddle

Firstly, posting about later events in a storytime makes you the biggest cunt of all. You didn't even spoiler anything. Secondly he took Shark's soul because he thought he was a number holder. He let him go afterwards. He never took anyone's soul for the sake of it, he did it to gather the numbers and protect his brother. By his own admission, he sold his soul to the devil. Thats because Yuma is the kind of character with room to grow who needs that kind of thing, Yami doesnt because is already in an aspirational position. Just because kaito fulfills a narrative function that yuma needs doesnt really make him better than kaiba who doesnt have to do the same for yugi and can act more as a straightforward antagonist instead of doing the rival deuteragonist thing like GX and 5ds which i believe you meant with second fiddle. And even then yami gets some development in the Duelist kingdom arc when kaiba and mai challenge his fear of losing. All this doesnt make kaito good when instead of jobbing you get grating kaitowank instead.

i forgot. he took sharks soul and just kept it despite not getting any number from it and only returns it when yuma fucking tells him as if he couldnt have done that right away, which just seems to display his indifference to the people he soulmurdered. this is what i mean with kaito being a cunt but the show wanking him to convince you hes not

Kaito is far from the best because the writers went the other extreme and made him too perfect. The Duel with Shark would be the worst in the franchise if a certain Duel in Arc-V didn't top it.
