I saw Adolescence of Utena in theaters today. Not my first time seeing it but it was worth going out of my way to watch it in a theater. Discuss Prince Akio's Wild Ride.
I just watched it for the first time a few months ago but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see it in theaters. I firmly believe it is one of the most gorgeous movies ever animated and there were lots of little details I didn't pick up on my first watching.

Just watched it as well for the second time. It’s stunning. I was caught off guard by Touga in the elevator. I also forgot Akio was a little punk who was already killed off. His menacing Epstein aura in the series was so overwhelming it’s all I could remember about him.Also, what was with one of the last scenes, where Utena is replaced by a dark haired boy? I don’t get how that fits in the story
The whole car transformation is one of those scene that's so silly when you think about it but when you're watching it you're just completely engrossed in it. One of my favorite finales ever.

This is at the very end of the movie after they are in the outside world, pic related (this dark hair NPC is standing where Utena was in a scene at the beginning of the movie, when she is first introduced to the school). Taking everything into context, the easiest explanation is that the cycle is restarting with someone else, but that seems cheap. Or maybe because they escaped none of this ever happened and her presence in the school is erased? I don’t know. Any idea?

Closest comparison I can think of is Angel Beats though putting that and Utena in the same league is laughable.What puzzles me a bit is the car Juri, Miki and Saionji ride off in had Wakaba on the hood which made me think she left with the rest of them but then she's here in the end. Maybe it was just a easter egg on Ikuhara's part.

Penguindrum is one of my favorite anime ever so I was eventually going to watch Utena, but I mainly got the push to start watching it because I wanted to watch the movie, because apparently Revue Starlight The Movie takes heavy inspiration from it and that movie is my anime of the decade.

I have to say that this movie probably had one of the most artistically resonant moments of visual storytelling I've ever seenSeeing water being used as a metaphor for the character's emotional states throughout the show already lead to a significant payoff in the show's finale, and yet the movie having Anthy take control of an emotionally tense moment by having her directly seize one of the series's storytelling devices is the most intimate and cathartic expressions of love that I don't think can be replicated anywhere else. I think it's worth watching the show to be able to grasp the significance of this scene. I'll be thinking about this moment forever
