I honestly think rebuilds are just too muddled to actually extract a coherent point or worldview from. The original intention of rebuilds was to essentially streamline the original eva story and something happened between 2.0 and 3.0. My best guess is Anno wanted to streamline the eva story but also build on top of it but the regular eva structure couldn't fit it in because too many elements of the story and structure are building a certain climax and idea. So at some point radical change needed to happen to throw the story off it's axis but the issue is they were already two movies deep. Rebuilds are incoherent because they aren't really one piece of work they're a Frankenstein monster hastily grafted together.

They see a mere detail in the original, shave off the fat and most of the meat and then throw it in the rebuilds expecting the same audience response. That is what is wrong with the Rebuilds to me. This was already the problem to me before the 3rd movie, which I actually still think is a highlight (though still sloppy at times) because they really try to correct things because of criticism recieved for the first 2 horrendous films which bored me to tears. I was like 14 and eva was NEW to me and the first 2 films bored me to tears. I binged the original (like 2-3 times in a couple months) after that and realised it wasn't me getting bored with Eva, but the films doing something wrong. That's when I got worried.
