Manga is also typically the work of one person (with assistants and the editor), so it is more in line with the original vision of the creator without the design by committee aspect that occurs with a big production like an anime. And finally, manga's pacing suits the types of stories in anime/manga better. Frieren might not be my favorite manga, but I enjoyed the light wistfulness and the goofy humor of it as a manga and feel like dragging a five minute reading experience into a twenty-four minute experience watching does not tend to be for the narrative's benefit. You can dislike comics, but there is a point to them.

I haven't read the manga. Overall I am impressed with this first season. Yes, obviously because the animation is exceptionally good, but also because the story so far is solid and I really like the idea of a group of antagonists that are pursuing ultimate freedom in a world with strict rules. This flying hat guy seems particularly evil, but I'm sure there are a lot of brimhats whose morality is hard to find fault in, and likewise the pointed hats (the supposed good guys) will have their fair share of bad actors. I like how arguments for and against restrictions on magic are at the core of the story, the character's motivations, the worldbuilding and everything. The cliff hanger kind of sucks, but what can you do? I hope season two won't take too long to finish.

The bridge arc was really bad compared to the rest, the quality went down significantly. Likely AOTS, but definitely not AOTY.
