Ai is described as the codependency of desire, which could be a reference to wish granting, but since they're literally called "love" I think it has more to do with the Ai possessing someone as a way of experiencing love from their loved ones. What Ai seem to do is possess people (why they're gaseous) and wring people to death (as we see at the IPA), so Nanika's Hatsu uses Nanika's power as a condition for wish granting. That said, some of the specifics could fall on either side. Is Killua being an exception more a part of the Nen ability (like Pakunoda) or does it have more to do with how an Ai normally functions? Probably the former, but there might be something to the latter as well. Also, is the Hatsu's ability to detect a target's loved one (for killing) solely part of the Nen ability or is that something all Ai can inherently do? We'll probably never know since we're never getting very far into the DC.

The archetypal hunter is one with nature, challenger to beasts and seeker of hidden bounties that rest within them. But most of the series is Dragon Ball in suits and skyscrapers. He wanted to explore all the different types of hunters one could be and he needed a power system so he went with the tried and tested magic kung fu and just stapled it on top of the hunter theme. He then told the stories he wanted to tell: martial arts tournaments, video game isekai, city noir thrillers, political scheming. Not a lot of shooting boars or navigating swamps. He could have told a story like that in the main world, but I think he thought the powerlevels had gotten too high.Netero represents what Hunter x Hunter has been, while Beyond represents what you would think it would be based on the name. As he said in the video, his son is more of a real hunter than he is.
