Toriko is great, Jump doesn't make cool adventure manga like that anymore. Or to be truthful it does but then kills them in 4 volumes because the editors don't want to bother with a slow build-up and anyway the common Jump voter only care about the new edge movement.

He wants to redo the anime both because the current anime is over a thousand episodes long and kind of hard to get into, and often has pacing and animation issues, so the new anime is supposed to be better than Toei's. Toriko is totally devoid of likable characters. OP is shit but I remember moments where Zoro made me laugh or Chopper was cute.
Toriko starts off with a charisma vacuum protagonist, annoying ugly side character, and its all downhill from there.
You can say its not about the characters, its about the world and the spectacle. The world is very cool, the spectacle works sometimes (especially at the end when they’re eating planets and shit).
But all the whimsy in the world doesn’t make up for the #1 sin of writing: “I don’t care what happens to any of these characters.”
Gurren Lagann was huge and crazy AND had a lovable cast. Toriko coasts on vibes and even when I was reading it at a young adult I knew that shit sucked.
I did like the fight against the guy with thousands of different bugs in his stomach. That was neat
