Trucks are not hard to make (so less horses to feed for supplies). Hell, he could just be using armored cars and Toyota trucks like they do in Africa, only they run off the same shitty wood gas engines Japan used IRL in the 1940s because no oil. Why does nobody have shit like machine guns or modern rifles and grenades even though the JSDF and US bases have tons of them? Why are there no aircraft even though planes can run on ethanol and balloons on literal hot air? Why are there no trains even though again, they can run on ethanol or even charcoal? Why is there no electricity when wood is everywhere, windmills and lead acid batteries a thing, and generators not hard to rig up? It's really hard to suspend disbelief for this setting, since it tries to take itself so seriously even though everything potentially interesting is reduced to a background aesthetic so the writer can do his Romance of the Three Kingdoms fanfic.
