Chapter 81Shima returned to China, meeting Chen at the airport and informing him on what went down in Japan which confirmed their suspicions of Zeng having underworld ties. They took the China's new maglev train back to Shanghai which they found to be a bit of a disconcerting experience and upon arriving back, Shima received a call from Noriko. Sun had collapsed and was now in the hospital.Previous >>288937905

That's it for today. Next time, Sun fires the first shot against Zeng.

Yes, Shima is back! Was he ever gone? As if!
>>288959771>>288960752Beijing Children's Hospital (北京儿童医院)appears to be a real hospital, but "Beijing 9 Children Hospital" (北京九童医院). Not sure why Hirokane replaced 儿 with 九. Maybe he didn't want to get sued?
>>288963115I mean most everything in the series is an off-brand version of real things to the point where when you see an actual company mentioned it's kind of surprising. Even otherwise stadnard organizations like the ruling party in the Shimaverse being the fictional Democratic Party and not the actual Liberal Democratic Party. I'd guess it probably comes down Japanese laws not really being protective of parody and other things like that so it's safer to just change one or two moonrunes to change the name. Sort of like how a lot of manga nowadays will have references asterisked or O'd out in the mdidle of the name.

>>289014410I don't think it's over yet, dude iced his girl without blinking an eye.
>>289002723Honestly, you'd be surprised. So many talking points in Shima I've experienced in the real world.See, my area manager was technologically ilterate and mostly illiterate as is. She was as sharp as a tool in everything else, just couldn't write. Real boomer striker powers. Anyway, I spent many a year basically being her doppelganger. I would attend all the virtual meetings, I would write most of her emails to the regional etc. Was real easy during covid.Things like China joining the WTO, the neo-colonialism of Africa, the chases to the bottom of the labour ladder all absolutely keep bring bought up and chucked around. My chain was in jewellery and just like the Sunshine arc, i was taught about CDs bring a litmus for the entire changing retaik scenery. Not for high end expensive jewellery but there was a while where CDs, CD Players and that technology was a more strong middle class signifier than the high Street jewellery shops. Which created a crazy pivot into silver of all things because silver was dogshit cheap and you could counter signal silver the same way many anti-cd musicians were like. The CD, China and everything was where the social signalling / symbol became far more at the forefront than anything else. Which sounds daft but before there was a degree of taste, audience and mutual interaction. Instead of the "selling you yourself" style. Perhaps it was just a British thing but spending the years learning of the history of the company, shitty owners and crazy leadership was really interesting. You see plenty of "burned everything else for the ladder" type guys and you hear about how they crashed through 4 women in messy divorces and now just exist to scream about KPIs like a last years KPI was their dead son. Shima's passiveness has sort of become a rarity, but that's also because the entire retail sector is in a plane screaming "pull up!" while air control is telling the cabin crew everything is gonna be okay.

Shima is an asshole by circumstance (forced to exist in a world populated by seemingly nothing but shrewd, corrupt businessmen). Unfortunate but it happens. That crazy middle manager side character, though? He's an asshole for pure love of the game. Somebody keep an eye on him.I miss Konno and Chizuru and even his daughter.
>>289034769am I the only one who was left somewhat disappointed by Konno? he was setup to be a major pain in the ass for shima and a big hurdle to get over, but he barely managed to inconvenience him. he didn't feel like the reoccurring mini boss he was supposed to be. I did like the end of his story though
>>289034967Hm, not really, but it's hard to explain, when you write or vocalise these things I always feel like I lose the vibe..Like Konno is introduced as a villain, but he isn't really, not at heart. He's an asshole, retard and bully but not deliberately evil. As the series goes on, Shima starts seeing many friendly faces who are actually corrupt, actually filled with malice that sort of just get away with it. Konno is very active, like Shima and ends up being more of a truth-cutter by his bullshit, which is why Konno was pretty up front every time about the shit that he got up too. When he lies about his wife, it's because he just went and sorted it out and took his shit. Every time he wanted to take his grudges out, he went straight to people above Shima. He was conniving, but honest about it. Konno is the platonic office villain, in a sense, but he's not actually evil. He understands his place. He takes his punishments while also vocalizing it. Konno didn't cause the death of anyone, or abandon kids. He wasn't yakuza, he wasn't stock fiddling, he wasn't even a race to the bottom labour guy. Konno actually was kinder to his wife than Shima has been with a bunch of his lays. Shima's sitting there talking about what to do in old age but Konno keeps pushing that boulder, considering the thesuicide the chapter before, it's a testament to how "pure" Konno ended up being. Him as the honest, petty office politics kinda asshole, makes Shima more honest and the real corrupt guys more evil.the more I type this out the more he reminds me of my one true husbando and now I'm gonna neck myself.
