I've been surprised by some of the things I've watched lately. hikari no densetsu surpsied me with a lot of great animation on the routines. I'm a bit sad it got canceled early.
I'm watching queen millennia now and I think it's a bit more enjoyable than 999.
I finished up the original Patlabor ova's and rewatched the films to cap them off. Blue Submarine No. 6 surprised me. Lots of visual whiplash, beautiful backgrounds to rough looking cgi then generic/smooth interiors and back to nice detail. The last episode and the villain's gambit made up for all of it imoAnd not quite retro but RE; Cutie Honey was pretty good but it probably just comes down to whether you're pro-Nat or anti-Nat. The Go Nagai cops made me chuckle
>>289037814how do you feel about them compared to the tv show? I tried TV but after 10 episodes I didn't see the need to continue. Is the ova series similar in tone or bit different?
>>289037850I'm honestly not sure, my exposure to Patlabor was the films first and now the ova's. I'll watch the updated tv series when I get a chance.>Is the ova series similar in tone or bit different? The best I can say is that it's closer to Patlabor movie 1 than Patlabor 2. I enjoyed both, Oshii has good comedy chops but I believe he only directed and someone else wrote this time. The origin of Matsui was pretty surprising and the resolution even more so. You briefly live Hiromi's entire life in the moment he shares with his lookalike
>>289038263Thanks anon. I was considering the movies so I think i'll try that first before seeing if the movies after similar to TV or not.
While not-quite-retro, how you feel about some of the rookies who have adapted older mangaka's styles? page ripped by me from her serialization, but it's not yasuhiko.Do you think we'll see some newer works with old styles "rip offs" some people will say?
>>289036757They're great in different ways. 999 transcends itself, in the sense of limitations of structure and tone. It's genuinely special. But Queen Millennia is in that league with the best Leiji works, and is the more solid show overall. Does not really deserve being less known.
>>289039143Yeah, I agree with the last part for sure. I think I like it more due it being less episodic.
Do you guys know if pic related ever got an english release? The best I can find is a copy with arabic subtitles
>>289040855I'd like to watch it too but no.
>>289036739Queen Millennia is great, one of my favourite Leiji works, but I prefer the anime over manga. More conclusive ending (which I know was because the show got axed/cancelled), that is. Also some moments and scenes felt much more fleshed out compared to the manga, like how Hajime's parents were properly introduced.>>289036757I highly recommend watching Maetel Legend and Space Symphony Maetel that serve as a bridge between Queen Millennia and GE999, even though the continuation feels a bit off. Both are meant to be direct sequels to Queen Millennia the TV series, but Space Symphony Maetel features manga version of Larela, while the TV series has its own Larela design. The movie has the manga Larela too. Space Symphony Maetel is more like a love letter to Leiji fans, since Captain Harlock with his crew and Tochiro from Gun Frontier appear there. Both Maetel Legend and Space Symphony Maetel were made in early 2000s, so this kinda breaks the thread's rules... but when will I ever get to mention these elsewhere.Anyhow, go watch The Cockpit as well. It's superb
>>289041723Do you mean that you prefer the manga over the anime? I'm actually curious if there is some watch order for his works because I want to watch some of the movies but I'm not entirely sure which ones shows be watched in which order. Especially the 999 movies.
>>289042463Manga has its own moments, but I like the anime version more. It feels more cohesive too. Here's one watch order list you can follow:https://leijiverse.com/en/watch-order/
>>289042602Sorry I thought you mean manga because you segwayed in to the ending/cancellation so I thought you made a mistake. However, that link is exactly what I've been looking for. Thanks anon!I tried to read the manga and felt that the anime was more fleshed out. In a way similar to sailor moon where the manga was the pitch for it almost. However, that's just my impression of 999’s big comic ver.

>>289040855>>289041303the quality isn't the best, but it comes with subshttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QkNCnHG7pJs
>>289044756I think I'll pass and hope for good subs. Eiichi Yamamoto had his ups and downs but this looks pretty good. And fucked up holy shit.
Watched picrel. It's not bad but it's miserable and bummed me out. That's about it.
>>289046496Sounds like it's time for good old comedy.
>>289046065This isn't just fanservice or an innocent scene is this..
>>289036739>SpoilerThat show is great. Its director was on an absolute rampage until the 2000s
Finished Cutie Honey recently, i cant say its objectively good, characters are flat, story is nothing and inconclusive, each episode ranges from nonsense to very by the books and the animation peaks on episode1 with it being ambitious but for most of the time, subpar. But even with all that said, i cant say i didnt enjoy my time with it, there is something about 70's animu direction and specifically Go Nagai writing that you cant get anywhere else, very charming in this trashy sort of way. Also, last but not least, but i really like the use of colors in this, from the backgrounds to the shading to other details, its all very inspired in how exaggerated and colorful everything is, like an old western comic.3/10, its bad but i like it, watch it if you like Go Nagai stuff, otherwise skip it.
>>289049013I was honestly surprised how well the show was both animated and the pacing besides the canceled ending. It's definitely one I can recommend to people.
