Then later on it started having longer arcs, but the big one was when they went to planet Namek and spent an incredibly long series of chapters there to do basically one thing that kept spiraling outward into more and more problems. This carried over into the DBZ anime, which often had to pad it will filler because it had caught up to the manga, making everything take even LONGER to resolve, and the reaction to it by people watching was basically "Holy shit, are they STILL ON NAMEK?"But that namek ark is in no way some kind of black mark on the series. You might know it as the Freiza Arc, or the Supersaiyan Arc, aka when the most iconic characters and imagery of the whole manga was introduced. In a lot of ways, the Namek arc *IS* Dragonball Z, the definitive part of it that everyone remembers the most.
