I didn't enjoy watching the coffee-house gossip like discussions they had there. I had no idea that most people from their village are actually aliens. It also felt like they retconned a lot with the Jurai Royal family being aware that Yosho was on earth still alive and even visited space. I think I enjoyed the season 3 althoug I prefer the Tenchi Universe canon of Tenchi's parents meeting in the 70s as teenagers instead of being hundred of years old and I think that the third ova series wasted Z's character too much, he had a lot of potential. I haven't watched any other Tenchi Universe stuff but I accidentally watched Daughter of Darkness after watching the third OVA series because I was misinformed that it was connected to the Ryuohki canon. Then I decided to continue watching the other two movies. The change of the voices from the third OVA to the fourth was noticeable even with Tenchi. The vas really got older. The artstyle also changed a lot for the worse. I prefer the cel animation of OVA 1 and 2 but the digital animation of the third OVA series was at least close enough and looked good. What I find interesting in the fourth OVA was the idea that because of the human technology that makes it easier for the aliens to hide, they decided to move away from earth.

The manga really is good, It does the right mix of slice of life stuff and space adventures. The series can still be good when it actually focuses on the main characters and not the space grannies. I don't know why he's so fixated on that. If you want to explore Jurai shit focus on the parts that are actually interesting. Like you got a villain who wants to make the best not light saber. Or you get to explore were the space trees that make the jurai ships come from. Even the more mundane moments will do interesting stuff. Sasami will go on a cooking show or you get a chapter about her missing her mom. Ryoko and Ayeka will actually reflect about why they like Tenchi and it's interesting and nice. They even bring in Kiyone for a bit because fuck it the fans like her.

However with all 3 of these, they aired around 20 years ago so it's hard to say if anyone involved even remembers where they wanted to go with the show back then.
I just hope the physical reward tiers are not going to be more than 100 bucks. I just want a physical copy be it BluRay OR VHS.
Sometime in the early 2000s, when I was about 12, I brought Daughter of Darkness over to my friends place so we could watch it together. I had already seen it a few times by then, but my friend, who was also a big Tenchi fan, had not. He wanted to watch it on the big living room TV for the full experience. Now, if you've seen the movie you already know that it has some pretty incestuous overtones, so on one hand I wanted to tell him that watching such a movie in the living room probably wasn't wasn't best idea, but on the other hand, knowing how big of a Tenchi fan he was, I didnt want to spoil any part of the movie under any circumstance. But then I thought about it for a moment and realized that I hadn't seen his parents at home that day. So we start watching and everything was going fine, but you know how parents seemingly have a sixth sense for knowing when to walk in at the most awkward of times? Well his mom walked into the living room right in the middle of the scene where Mayuka joins Tenchi in the bath. She stops and stands there for a minute, watching, clearly flabbergasted by what she is seeing. So she slowly turns around and gives us a certain kind of look. You know the one. The look of an adult in the early 2000s who has never seen anime or only has some vague misconception that anime is Japanese pornography. So she looks at us and says "What in the world are you two watching?" And without missing a beat my friend goes "You see that girl there? That's his daughter actually," and then goes on to give his mother a rundown of the plot up to that point. Somewher during this exchange he mentions that I was the one who brought the movie over, and from that day on his mom always gave me a weird look whenever I was around.
