It's obvious that UY is unplanned and thus very messy. You have Shinobu who is clearly meant to be the everyman heroine, but she is displaced, but the writer doesn't want to write her out so she kind of hangs around the main cast for the rest of the manga. Then half way through Ryunosuuke shows up and really should have just been its own manga since her story and background and humor is completely removed from the show and setting. Ataru starts as an everyman, then turns into bugs bunny. It's really messy. You can see all the other Rumiko manga are much better planned. Ranma is meant to be a gender bender action series from day 1 and sticks to it.

They even introduce sub-space which functionally is an otherworld of yokai and means they could have done away with the outer space origin for yokai to begin with. Oh hey remember the Imp chapter?
