I feel fighting games worked in Hi Score Girl because it used video games as a narrative tool to explore the relationship between the two main characters. It also helped that it wasn’t all about SF, but rather the whole 90s arcade scene, and that it played everything completely straight, without trying to make it seem cool, interesting, or deep. Tai Ari tries to do the same and desperately fails, because it just comes across as pretentious and try hard.
