>>289232264>so why keeping using palanquin?>Tradition?Either that or because it's probably a status symbol. You're making 4+ grown men ferry you to your destination in your own private "carriage". It's like the limousine of Feudal Japan. If only we had a friendly /his/tori/a/n to educate us.

>>289235504Song dynasty in China had already figured out that using men as beasts of burden was humiliating. So they limited palanquins to only the very highest levels of society.
>>289224214Ah, so it was an LED bulb instead of an incandescent. This took an insane amount of effort for one Japanese genius to create even in the modern day:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF8d72mA41MJin should consider himself lucky that Hisashige didn't burn out the LED by applying too high of a voltage to it.
>>289238966See?A little pain gets people back in line.
ovaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
>>2892322641. riding a horse requires training and isn't as easy as just hailing a cab2. riding with a rotten leg would be painful3. horses are expensive (though he could probably afford it)4. the horse are deeply associated with the warrior class a.k.a. the bushi and their "Way of Horse and Bow". wouldn't be surprised if actors were barred from owning one5. riding horses is for guards and servants and the occasional adventurous hatamoto, not a respectable gentleman6. he's trying to be inconspicuous7. Traditiooooooooon! tradition!
>>289239527Thanks OP!So Tanosuke is a male role-playing women on stage? I guess it wasn't such a big deal back then.
>>289242214Successful onnagata were a pretty big deal. How they came about is actually hilarious. According to tradition, kabuki was invented by a woman, so obviously kabuki plays had women in female roles in the beginning. But because the Japanese have always been deranged about their celebrities, the men in their audience got into deadly fights over the actresses. The government also didn't like that many samurai were obsessing over low-born wenches. They banned women from performing, and female roles were taken over by teenage boys. However, the teenage boys were still so popular that they caused social unrest. The government then forced the teenage boy actors to switch to the adult male hairstyle, and that apparently was enough to stop fans from getting violent over them. Female role actors could still become hugely popular celebrities, beloved by men (who could buy their sexual services) and women.
>>289243104we should also note europe also had male actors playing female roles since medieval times, so japan wasn't that unique.

>>289232264>They had horses, so why keeping using palanquin? As some anon has already pointed out, during the Tokugawa Shogunate, only samurai of middle rank or higher were permitted to ride horses. Most people could not ride on horseback, except when they were being transported as cargo. It may be interesting to mention that the horse castration was rarely practiced in Japan until the 20th century, for some reason. Because of this, the horses that samurai treasured for their abilities were often hard to control. But, at the same time, mastering such a horse was a proof of a rider's exceptional skill.
>>289238492>Jin should consider himself lucky that Hisashige didn't burn out the LED by applying too high of a voltage to it.Voltage is important, but he should have also thought about the polarity of LEDs. Or, since the problem was just a dead battery, he should have just kept the flashlight as it was.

I'm still reading along since chapter 1.
>>289232264>They had horses, so why keeping using palanquin? As the other anon has said, it was forbidden by law. Only certain samurai and people the government gave explicit permission for(like when Jin went around to save people with penicilin, hell he even got allowed to ride a steamship to heal people) could use horses.
