It's one of my favorite anime of all time. It is the first thing to make me realize maybe living forever really isn't that great. A lot of anons get filtered because it's slow and abstract. They are better suited for DBZ and My Hero Academia.
The OST is also great one of the few anime I listen to the OST by itself, though I already was a huge fan of Ging Nang Boyz.
If you make it through the Monkey Baseball episode ypu may as well finish the whole thing, it's worth it if you want to have more to think about than how muscly and strong Goku is with his shirt off.

It's a baseball league here in the world of Monkey Mountain,
played by the great monkeys, which started when the first ball and bat
and the rules of the game were handed down to them.
In the Monkey League, a number of great players arose
from among the nameless monkeys,
whose faces and appearances all looked the same.
They included the legendary home run king,
who batted an unprecedented, record-breaking
80 home runs in one year, Steroid Monkey;
the one who bested the god of batting, Monkey River's career batting average
by two thousandths, the miracle hitting machine, Upper Monkey;
the greatest catcher of the Bigfoot era, Mister Monkey;
later, as manager, he would go on to break the record for most league wins,
with a legendary ten-season-long streak!
Then came the golden age of the M-League.
A miracle monkey came along
and shattered those previous legends one by one--
the monster, Monkey Blue!
This maverick of the league was the only one with blue hair,
who, despite weathering ugly discrimination and crafty persecution,
triumphed over them with overwhelming talent, ultimately becoming a hero,
and a symbol of hope for the monkeys!
Although a rookie, Blue put the brakes to the king, Steroid Monkey!
Breaking his bat as well as his heart, Blue drove him to retirement.
Then, with his mighty pitching arm,
Blue led the underdog team Monkey and Club to victory,
preventing Bigfoot's championship streak from reaching 11.
The public accepted this new hair color,
and there was no doubt in anybody's mind
that the era of Monkey Blue had begun! But then...
...that great tragedy, when a near-perfect game was foiled,
and a monkey was killed, took place!

You can absolutely enjoy it without "getting it" immediately if you accept that some stuff might not make any sense ever and just let the great visuals and soundtrack wash over you. Since the setting has this huge class of kids with a bunch of them not mattering that much, I think you're invited put yourself in their shoes as if you were going along, exploring these seemingly nonsensical words, each with their gimmick, some of which might resonate and some of which won't. The monkey baseball thing, for instance, I don't think was any good, but episode 8 is one of the best from any anime I've ever watched. In any case the baseball episode ended up being useful in the long run since plenty of the people who weren't that much into the show ended up dropping it and the threads back then got comfier.
And then it gets rewarding when you revisit certain episodes and start connecting the dots. If I remember correctly there was this space-bending girl who is revelead to have turned into a massive red crystal at some point, and I believe it was the same red crystal the students used to power their ark. The visuals for the girl's superpower in action and for the ark at work were similar too, really fun stuff.
The issue I think is that some people demand it be easily readable and full of action from the get-go, and when instead they get some slow paced thing that works on dream logic, they go ham. And of course the EVA types and trolls relish in that and run the 2deep4u routine, which is always off-putting
>>
>>289252076
It didn't resonate because it's not my youth but i recognized it as such. It's same kind of of story japan's produced over and over for decades so it's too bad /a/non couldn't even recognize what he was watching.
Albeit for different age ranges Sonny Boy speaks of the late 10's like FLCL speaks of the late 90's.
Surrounded by kindergarden google furniture but you've got to watch out for school shooters.

I'm an old fuck so i didn't know young people like to share their geoposition with their friends on a minimap because it's practical to them and if you don't then you're a shifty weirdo up to no good. The level of connectivity of that, forget social fabric it's social kevlar. Post 2021 we can realistically consider our world to be hosting bubbles of alternate reality in which same ideas hold different meanings. Hyper social yet completely divided. Sounds stressful. And then we tell them "the future is you, you gotta build a new world" 'cause we don't know wtf to do
>>

Not really
After Nagara makes the decision to return to our world, there's nothing to suggest he was right in doing so. If anything the ending portrays his life as boring if not miserable from that point, while the indian guy who stayed adrift seemed really content
>>

Doesn't this show have an NTR ending?
>>
>>289255758
This is my attempt to understand of the plot:
The story about God psychologically experimenting on teenagers by creating clones of them and trapping them in a parallel reality for thousands of years.
God is a school principal, so he clones and transports all of the students in his school to this alternate multiverse. The students arrive alongside their classmates and due to time passing differently on different worlds, some of the classes were 'adrift' for far longer. Each of the students is given different abilities by God although some of them are borderline useless, and some don't even know they have abilities.
The three most important abilities belong to the three main characters. Nagara's and Mizuho's abilities are what allows the parallel multiverse to function (Nagara unintentionally created all the worlds and Mizuho unintentionally created all the clones of the students) so in a certain sense they're the Adam and Eve of the parallel multiverse. Nozomi is the only student with an ability to return home, although she dies, turning into the compass which Nagara and Mizuho use to return.
As time passes differently on the different worlds, Nagara and Mizuho only spend two years on their world before making use of Nozomi's compass to return home. This propels them exactly two years into the future from when they went adrift and the psychology of their clone merges with the psychology of their real person. Those who had spent hundreds or thousands of years adrift (like Yamabiko) no longer have the ability to return home since their real version is long dead.
The fake version of the real world the students view halfway through the story is a hoax created by God. Nozomi is dead in this fake 'real world' (which turns out to be untrue, but foreshadows that her clone will die adrift).
Initially it was not possible for any of the clones to die, but at some point Hoshi invented the concept of death to allow all of the clones to escape their existence.
>>
every character who lived in the fake reality for tens, hundreds or thousands of years wants to end it all but why would the main character decide he'd rather be in the real world instead of spending an eternity wishing for his death in a dream makes no sense
>>
>>289249946

>Nagara's and Mizuho's abilities are what allows the parallel multiverse to function (Nagara unintentionally created all the worlds and Mizuho unintentionally created all the clones of the students)
Yamabiko, the teacher, and the students in the digging pit were there in the other world before nagara and mizuho first went into the other world, unless you think their abilities worked retroactively
The impression I got from the end was that the real world does exist, but they never returned to the real world and just went into a parallel universe in the other world where nozomi was alive, since the compass that was an ability from the other world still worked

I really liked reading this anon's view a while back, and I think it's the canon intent of the author. I just really liked this show for the vibes and the visuals (Hisashi Eguchi designed the main trio). The plot is kind of just hinted for you to figure out, similar to evangelion, but in a way that was a lot better (and quite sad, think about what Nozomi was doing on the roof).

>Does this shit get good?
No. It's pseud trash with hideous and cheap character art. The characters have less detail than average and little to no shading. The studio pablo 2d backgrounds are the only redeeming quality of this trash.
>>
>>289267437
whats wrong with the FLCL comparison?
I can get why it exists, the shows are basically both coming of age stories told in an abstracted manner with really good OSTs and animation
>>
>>289266441
a lot of gaynax girls are ugly af, especially this one
>>
>>289250270
So it's just a coming of age drama? Is there what's special about it?
>>
>>289268607
>really good OSTs and animation
No him. kek FLCL doesn't have a good OST, and it certainly doesn't have "really good" animation. Or IDK, music is kinda subjective, but I get no enjoyment out of listing to the pilllows. The animation is subpar a lot of the time in the original FLCL. There are only around a half dozen pieces of impressive animation in FLCL. Most of the fluid animation in FLCL is cheap since it cuts corners on detail and shading so having lots of low effort fames isn't particularly noteworthy. FLCL also looks like garbage.
>>
>>289261109
watch some actual anime instead of just pretentious psued shit you saw in a 3x3 thread
>>
>>289268607
FLCL is strongly about not completing the coming of age ritual while Sonny Boy obviously completes its journey.
Sonny Boy with FLCL's thrust would end with them not finished with the journey.

>>
I liked it, it has a lot of neat concepts that I found interesting, though I'll admit the ending was a miss for me. I'm sorry if you don't like it, I don't think a show like this is for everyone, which isn't to say you're too good or too bad for the show or belittling you, it just doesn't seem like it appeals to everyone's taste.
>>
>>289266643
I assumed all the students went 'adrift' at the same time due to Nagara's and Mizuho's abilities being activated, but some classes were sent to worlds where time passed extremely quickly in comparison to the world that class 2-C was on, hence why Yamabiko was already adrift for thousands of years before meeting with class 2-C. Alternatively, it's possible God dropped the different classes of students at different points in the timeline. The teacher is probably just another student whose ability allows them to resemble one of the school's teachers.
>>
It's one of those that's entirely made out of metaphores you dunces. Nothing that happens on screen is what happens. Plotfags i swear.
