Ranka forever.

Macross as a series is really decent at keeping the winner a mystery. A lot of romcoms feel obvious but I'm always surprised how it could go either way with Macross girls.

You should rewatch Frontier then because it's so biased towards Sheryl that Ranka never stood a chance, and I say this as a Rankafag back when it aired. Alto has so many intimate scenes with Sheryl. They have so much chemistry together. Sheryl even implicitly sleeps with Alto later in the series. Meanwhile, Alto just treats Ranka as just some girl he met. He cares about her at a superficial level, but that's it. He never really treats Ranka as anything special. He even gets to the point where he's alright with killing her for betraying Frontier.
Ranka never stood a chance.

The movie does address this a bit, and makes Alto and Ranka friends already. They have some connection, and Ranka has a better chance in the movie, especially since she actually does stuff in the movie, whereas in the show, Ranka never once makes her own decision. She's always being played by someone. The series really does Ranka dirty.
I still like Ranka more than Sheryl, but Sheryl's fall from grace and redemption is more interesting than Ranka's explosive underdog story.
