>fantasy world setting>uses Gregorian calender
write a unique season keeping system right now
>>289268869most fantasy is lazy slop, don't think too hard about it or you'll see worse things.
>fantasy world setting>it’s actually Earth in the far futurelame
>fantasy world setting>they count in base 10
>>2892688984 "long months" each with 2 "short months" each long month corresponding to a season and each short month is the beginning and ending of each season. When referring to the date you give the day, short month, long month, then year
>fantasy world setting>they speak the same languages we do in our world
>fantasy world>there is age of consentwhy would you ruin everything?
>>289269060Im honestly annoyed just how little world building goes into fantasy considering fucking tolkien is the father of modern epic fantasy.>>289269073This can be excused do long as its abundantly clear that the language they are actually using isn't japanese/english/whatever. All you really need to do is have a visible writing system and give the language a name to get that point across
I try my best not to think about the subject of language, customs, etc. because I can understand just how needlessly distracting worldbuilding can be for its own sake. I used to be into nitpicky attitudes like that.
>>289268869you understand why they do this when you end up with a dm who decides he wants to make everything more complicated for no reason. It just adds needless confusion
>>289269311>DMWhat the FUCK does this have to do with pen and paper roleplay?
>fantasy world setting>year has 365 daysI know why they do it, because if they don't it leads to some interesting questions, but still.
>>289269259World building overshadowing the rest of the work is certainly a potential issue but i much prefer to see it over not seeing it.
>>289269634No, every story needs to take place in a white void from which emerges whatever the plot demands and nothing else
>>289269634That's because you're a stupid faggot autist who would rather read wikis than actual stories. Worldbuilding is a tool for conveying the story, not an end in itself.
World building that happens naturally through events is fine, pages upon pages of boring detail about how oh so unique your world is that I will immediately forget anyways is not.
>any random fictional world not industrial era earth>metric system
>>289269712You sure you replied to the right post?
>Fantasy setting>Has Earth level gravity
>>289268898There are no months but the world dies gradually and annually (in accordance with what we might view as the seasons) and heroes need to hunt winter to bring life back to the world, marking the start of each new year, however long that may be.>>289269103>Im honestly annoyed just how little world building goes into fantasy considering fucking tolkien is the father of modern epic fantasy. The issue with modern fantasy is you aren't just crafting a world, you're challenging readers expectations given fantasy is such a well trodden genre. Try writing elves as anything besides holier than thou forest people and you'll lose half the readers who keep superimposing their own preconceived ideas. Try coming up with an entirely new setting from scratch, borrowing nothing from existing stories, and it becomes an overly complicated mess few have the patience for.Ultimately worldbuilding is a tedious exercise, taking the most time yet contributing the least to the vital parts of a story. Worldbuilding often misses the point of storytelling, how you're meant to entice the reader's imagination not tire them with your own. Or in other words: it's like method actors who think you need to immerse yourself in the role for years to play a single character. Readers are on vacation to your world, not moving in. If your details aren't important to a scene you can skip them.
>>289268869It's a concession for the viewer. In-universe it's different, but it's translated into georgian calendar for us just like the language is translated into japanese instead of giving us fantasy gibberish.
>>289269721I prefer my world building to take place on pages with characters gear laid out
>>289268869>has its own unique calendar>never fully written out because the mc doesnt give enough of a shit to remember the name of monthsFucking re:zero

>>289269971>SubaruLet's be fair, he is mentally disabled and you shouldn't judge him.
By the way when the fuck did people stop using BC and AD? Seems like BCE and CE came out of nowhere.
>fantasy setting>there is a different language >protagonist is given magic to understand it>never learns how to read and write since it would be too difficult
>>289268898I would just steal the early Roman Calendar that started in March. And also January and February didn't have a name yet, so people just had 2 entire months that they didn't know what to call.
>horse is still the superior mode of transportation in fantasy
>>289268869this is because LN/manga are lower effort than say a 10-25 book 900 pages per novel fantasy series. they focus on characters and dialogue and easy to digest stories.
>>289272813both still in use, but primarily because the world moved past just christian countries being in charge of every standard. so they replaced Before Christ and Anno Domini (year of our lord) with Before Common Era and Common Era.
>>289272818Tsukimichi did this though, the goddess gave him all common languages except for human language, and he had to learn it from scratch until later spoiler. plenty of non popular series of isekai have language issues brought up as well.
>>289272899i remember my year 8 history teacher arguing about it, super bitch, didnt just say BCE/CE was the modern term, but that BC/AD was racist nazi etc etc, ending up asking her in class what event BCE/CE is centered about and was the first and only D i got in my entire schooling
>>289272899>>289272926I'm not Christian and I don't see a problem keeping a standard that has been used for a thousand goddamn years.
>>289273073Because Jesus Christ was an asshole who *checks notes* advocated forgiveness, charity, and restraint from worldly sinsWhat a jerk
