The whole deal with the TV show ending is that he simultaneously broke his vows and ended the duty that he used to resolve and define himself before fighting the 14th Angel. That not only did he lose the way he found value in his self to others, but he did what he felt was a horrible thing that only his role as a pilot would justify, and now that role meant nothing. He needed to learn to not only forgive himself, that he didn't need his role to have value to others, and he didn't need others for him to see value in himself.EoE Shinji is still a massive pussy and a pevert that lets people die instead of getting back into the Eva, having to be dragged around the whole time. That's such a huge departure, as TV Shinji would 100% try to lose himself in his duty and still find value, even if it meant breaking himself even further by entering into combat against other humans. His resolution pretty much skips everything about being an Eva Pilot and how that impacted his psyche, instead just focusing on being a little bitch that people deserves to hate because he's desperate for attention.
