The latter could work.

If Gonzo could make a shitty seinen anime that fails to understand Romeo & Juliet but somehow still preserve the title, they can make an anime about ballet.

Games like chess and it's variants are not good as the focus of a story, at high level there's no such thing as surprising your opponent or coming back from certain defeat, if something like that happens is because your opponent fucked up, most of the time both sides are mostly equal until one side gets a minor advantage and buils on it, it's even worse when you consider how chess engines can tell the player exactly where they fucked up and the best move in each position, ant chess anime would end up the same as any shogi anime, focusing on everything other than the game itself
>>
>>289292314
>chess engines can tell the player exactly where they fucked up and the best move in each position
It's easy to think along those lines when no human is a position to criticize what a powerful engine says is the best move, but engines don't play perfect chess. The best move according to an engine isn't always the best move there is, but if the engine can't see a better line, then no human player can either, so the difference is academic. A godlike being, or an alien with a planet for a brain, could dumpster stockfish.

Quibbles aside, I agree with >>289292314 that a game with more chance and opportunity would make for a better anime. Something with a good balance of randomness and skill like mahjong (many examples) or backgammon (would be neat).
>>
>>289292412
>A godlike being, or an alien with a planet for a brain, could dumpster stockfish
Good luck writing that into a story without people shitting on how retarded your god gamer is
>>
>>289292521
That wasn't the point, but if you wanted to have such a being in a story, you could just make the gameplay engine vs. engine and give one engine less time to think. Nobody would be in a position to criticize.
>>
>>289290516
https://youtu.be/2XtccnUNHKA NGNL was close enough, I guess?

You can take NGNL direction and fantasy-up chess more or less. Maybe twist the rules a bit?

>>
I like anime based on games, but unless it's a familiar game to the Japanese audience, you end up exposition dumping the rules. Then, unless the game is really simple, you run the risk of boring everyone to tears. Houkago Saikoro Club did modern games, but focused on simpler ones, probably for that reason. Yugioh was supposed to be about a variety of games, but ended up focusing on just one.
>>
Terror in Resonance sucked
>>
>>289292602
I love NGNL for its visual style, but it's more about cheating than it is about playing games.

There's some fun variants out there. A drawback chess story would be really cool.
>Regular chess, but both players have a unique randomized restriction they have to follow while trying to take the opponent's king or else they instantly lose
There's potential for a lot of creative drawback matchups as well as clever tricks like deliberately faking a easier drawback to lure the other guy into a feint.
>>
>>289290516
no thanks
>>
They should make a whole anime like that K-on doujin where they play Magic the Gathering

>>289290516
You can make like 3 "compelling" chess matches. One with a surprise castling turn-around "woah, he castled at this late stage? I am used to castling happening much earlier, it caught me off-guard", the second with "tricking the enemy who is in a much more favorable position into a stalemate for a draw" and the last being "huh?! en-passant?! Oh yeah, such a rule existed, damn it! I would have won against you, MC-san, if it wasn't for that fucking rule!"
After that the audience would lose interest because you can't make it exciting for the audience any more.

>at high level there's no such thing as surprising your opponent or coming back from certain defeat, if something like that happens is because your opponent fucked up,
At a high level people just start to play the metagame, they force errors by abusing things like the total amount of time alloted for the game, the overal tournament standings, they leverage their reputation or elo to instill apprehension or carelessness in their opposition. If you or I were to learn some 40 moves of the best computer theory and lines in a position we could theoretically match even the current world champion, but then he'd notice, cede some advantage to shift lines a little and there goes 10 hours of study down the drain. Chihayafuru is one of the best storts anime in my reckoning, but the sport they play is Japanese poetry slapping, a game that is ultimately much less intricate than chess.

Then why do they have so many scenes where the villain is moving pieces on a chess board as his keikaku unfolds?
>>
>>289298470
It's low IQ subtext for conveying the strategic, predictive style of the villain. It's also a statement about how autists that think chess makes them smarter are stupid, because all of these villains end up getting f'd in the a. So it's mocking chess if anything.
>>
>>289290516
Go works better because it's more unpredictable.
>>
>>289298498
The sad thing is that you could use a forced mate in x moves as a metaphor for the villain setting things up so no matter what the hero does they still lose, but instead of that they ar best show the villain getting a mate in 1 which usually means the hero is a retard who fucked up

>at high level there's no such thing as surprising your opponent
Wrong. Saccing major pieces in knife's edge positions is always surprising, even at high levels. All it takes is for you to see something that your opponent overlooked.
>coming back from certain defeat
Also wrong. Lots of tournaments and individual games have featured surprise comebacks. What makes chess so demanding is that it demands near-perfect play. You can be completely winning the whole game and one mistake is enough to create a draw or even turn it into your loss.
>if something like that happens is because your opponent fucked up
You could say that about any competition. Any win means one person fucked up and played sub-optimally while the other person played better, that's where the tension comes from. There's no drama to losing a coin flip.
>most of the time both sides are mostly equal until one side gets a minor advantage and builds on it
"They were equal until they weren't" is a meaningless statement.
>it's even worse when you consider how chess engines can tell the player exactly where they fucked up and the best move in each position
Chess engines are much better than human players, but they aren't perfect and they haven't solved chess. You can still "surprise" an engine by playing a move that is good at a depth greater than the search tree it uses to find moves.
>>
>>289292314
every time i surprised my opponents playing chess its because i used the same strategy i used to beat msDOS chessmaster 3000's bullshit, set up a trap where he gets sucked into decisions where he chases taking pieces that you want him to take until you just checkmate them out of nowhere

Hikaru no Go

Chihayafuru
Shion no Ou
Lots of mahjong series

Problem is that Japan has many other games that fill the same niche as chess in the west.

I also wish for "local boy beats GMs at their own game" chess manga. Maybe produced by one of the western companies like Netflix.

Not true, all the battles in season 1 were themed after the flow of a chess game. The last mech battle of season 1 is a Queen trade, C2 for Orange Boy. Jeremiah's new unstoppable mech was moving in bizarre ways all over the battlefield, it was clearly supposed to represent the enemy's Queen piece or perhaps a pawn promoted to Queen. After that trade, the black King gets checkmated by the white knight. Charles won.

I had an idea for a story that used chess as a backdrop, the MC joins the chess club in a join-our-club-or-it-will-be disbanded premise, and they don't really play competitively because there's too few people to play, they just play games and have conversations over them, starting with talking about the game but then going on all kinds of tangents
Now that I'm writing this it really reminds me of Satou's literature club flashback from Welcome to the NHK
And recently I started reading Gengaku Shijuu Soudan and it's pretty close in structure to what I had in mind
>>

>>
>>289318180
Why not? There's a huge market for anime with no plot, like romcom and slice of life. You could have a cute 2nd year girl joining her school's chess club, learning the rules and then eventually there's a whole arc where she preps for a tournament with another school, then in her final year right before graduation she enters a real local chess tournament...etc. When they're not playing chess they're drinking tea or whatever happens in slice of life. Idk.

>>289316477
You're a retard, you can easily reach 1000elo without bothering to learn any openings, after that you only really need to know one opening really well and a defense for 1e4 and 1d4 and you're good until like 1800elo at least
