Comfy thread for discussing manga for boys, and honestly young adults in general. What magazines are you following? How is their lineup in 2026?I'm only reading Jump but am considering branching out more.My favorite ongoing shonen manga (and favorite manga in general) are Hunter X Hunter and World Trigger! They're the two manga that are really trying something different in an ambitious and "righteous" way in my opinion. What are your favorites?Let's have a positive, friendly and relaxed-pace chat this weekend about Shonen/Shounen Manga (or even other manga, if you prefer!)
>>289294115Well, in terms of print magazines the only one I follow in particular is Sunday. I'm more of per series follower but for it I follow its content weekly. Started off with Mikadono and then branched out to the other ones like Parashoppers, Futari Bus, Utsuranain desu, KaguRai and many others on the list. Luckily anons translate as much as they can and VIZ picks up the slack on some of them so there is something to read.I do enjoy it when I find out that a series belongs to a publisher of another series I already read. But I like it more when it's an obsecure one.
>>289294505I was never into big girls or muscle girls but KaguRai's art may have been the straw that broke the camel's back for me.Also Futari Bus is such a misleading name (entirely a me issue) because I think of picrel every time.Parashoppers is a death game by the Saike Matashitemo guy so I'm actively curious in trying it out.I hope you'll keep an eye on this thread over the weekend to see what everyone reads!
>>289294505Speaking of, I do hope someone picks up Silver Mountain again. Genuinely one of the best fantasies currently being serialized
>>289294115why is dia no ace current season looking so ass compared to previous ones?
>>289294115I'm going to start Ushio & Tora once I finish Houseki no Kuni
Following some of WSJ, WSM, and WYJ, probably in that order in terms of how many series from each.
Favorite online publication?
>>289297178is anything really a proper competitor to jump plus? webry, and pocket magazine don't seem that big, but maybe that's just because mangaplus has a big impact on me
As some conversation starters, here's a few recent shonen manga titles/covers

>>289297233I don't know how much of the market J+ is taking. But I think other publishers have a better chance on the digital front compared to the print field.>>289298710Is this a manga for ants!?
Hi, these are my favorite shonen.
>>289297178I don't like web manga sites. Reading magazines is more engaging. Digital magazines are fine as long as they have an upper limit on the number of pages.
>>289294115Honestly, Weekly Shonen Jump has been on a bit of a down swing for me lately. Series I liked are ending or just ended, but their replacements aren’t really doing anything for me. Sunday probably has my favorite current lineup, followed by Magazine, then Jump, and Champion is carried extremely hard by IrumaWeekly Shonen Jump: Ichi the Witch; Someone Hertz; Blue Box; Nue’s Exorcist; Shinobino; Animal Signal; Witxh Watch; Akanebanashi; RobocoWeekly Shonen Magazine: Ano Shima no Uminesou; Dream Jumbo Girl; Kanan-sama wa Akumade; Kuroiwa Medaka; Kurotsuki no Yaergnacht; Mayonaka Heart Tune; Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru; Yowayowa Sensei; Yumene ConnectWeekly Shonen Sunday: Futari Bus; Kaiten no Albus; Maoujou de Oyasumi; Mikadono Sanshimai wa Angai, Choroi; Momose Akita no Hatsukoi Hatanchuu; Ogami Tsumiki to Ki Nichijou; Parashoppers; Shippo to Gekirin; Sousou no Frieren; Tonikaku KawaiiWeekly Shonen Champion: Mairmashita! >>289301031Can you read Japanese?
>>289294115I'm enjoying Hunter x Hunter at the moment. The current arc is amazing, I just wish Togashi was ~20 years younger (so he'd be in better condition to put out chapters, though still remain wise enough to be able to write this arc). Also gave Kagurabachi a shot yesterday, but I dropped it after 15 chapters. It was extremely shallow and the only character I liked was the villain guy, forgot his name, but the one who has the cloud katana. Sadly, there's nothing out there at the moment that can scratch the JJK itch, except maybe reading some old stuff.
Sorry for all the (you)s, I can't (you) more than 4 people but I was hoping to do even more.>>289294505>>289296189>>289298950>>289301031Just curious what you guys think of my current reading list. pastebin.com/sXVNAbD9 There's only like 20 or so series I'm actively following right now, I'm not really search for masterpieces anymore, just browsing in my comfort zone mostly. Although all of the masterpieces I've read are shounen... I really think shounen is the "best" demographic.>inb4 why not share myyanimelist or anilistplaintext is better...
>>289300429I just use a regular 2 pages setup>>289301031I like Sunday the most as well. Their series feel like the most experimental out of the four with less obvious editor interventation, with both the good and the bad that brings.
>>289303283The setup isn't the problem, all web manga sites default to double pages. The issue is that you can't simply go from a chapter of one series to one of another like you do with a magazine, there's always some obstacles in between. Discovering new series is harder as there's no incentive to simply follow them as they come out. Then you have the problem of uncoupled release schedules and chapters split into small parts so you can't simply pick up the monthly issue on its release and catch up with everything at once.
I thought about Rokudo no Onna-tachi for the first time in years a while back, and thought I'd check out the author's new series (Hanzo and the Thirteen Kunoichi). It's decent fun so far, somewhat similar in tone to Rokudo with unhinged girls going after the MC, except in a violent ninja setting and Hanzo is actually competent.
>>289304531Nigga, post bigger volume covers already!>>289304576I see. I understand that can be a problem if you are reading more than one series from the same publication.I'm on the opposite boat. If I liked a series enough I check the site's catalog and see if there is something else interesting they have. It helps that the first chapters are almost always available. It makes it easier to know if I'll stick with it or not.

>>289309675>Young Ace>ShonenDo you even look at the thumbnails you post?
>>289313800It was listed as a Shounen manga under Bookwalker, which is where I was getting these titles, although I acknowledge that Bookwalker is not a perfect source of truth and you must be right.
Is pic related worth checking out if I don't care much for heavy battle focused fast-paced manga and instead prefer slower ones focused on character development and world building? For context, I dropped Kagurabachi and Dandadan for different reasons (the former because I was not in the mood for something of it's kind, the latter due to the quality dropping around Vol 15 and the overall very repetitive arc structure), some of the current popular manga I follow and like are Spy X Family and Frieren and by far my favorite shounen manga of all time is Fullmetal Alchemist (which I love for reasons that aren't related to it being a shounen series at all lol). Some Jojo parts, Yu-Gi-Oh!, the first 2/3 of Shaman King and Soul Eater were also a blast to read and perfectly my kind of thing if I have to choose other examples that are more within the context of traditional battle manga. Will I like Ichi The Witch as well given my history?

Are there any untranslated shounen manga worth reading?>>289294115>>289317762>>289305467Have you guys read any of the manga in this list my nipponese? It supposedly represents "good taste" over there. pastebin.com/r9MPLyjg I feel like I disagree.>>289301995See above HxHbro. Also, I agree, then again I don't think anyone young or not could draw HxH's current arc weekly.Kagurabachi isn't really shallow per se, all Jump series follow a very strict formula for the first 15 or so chapters, you really can't judge it until you get to the Rakuzaichi arc. It's not like JJK was deep in the first 15 chapters (or ever...)
>>289317444Nope don't know who this Jeremy guy is.
lol, this was listed under bookwalker's shounen section as wellis anyone here actually watching this? or looking forward to the movie? i dropped it 2 episodes in, it felt even worse than isekai, maybe because it was so edgy, i dunno
>>289319642>>289302036Fuck off
>>289319794Haven't ever touched this, I only know it for the aura farming memes.
>>289315972Give the first few arcs a read, you might enjoy it! Though going by your taste and stuff currently publishing in WSJ, this is pretty high but you may also consider:>someone hertz>Animal Signal>Shinobi Undercover>Akanebut yeah I can totally see you loving ichi, I know I do
>>289315972Ichi the Witch is pretty mediocre imo.And it's not really a good manga for character focus.>>289316895Hard disagree, it feels like the quality on jump+ is extremely low (even for the best series there)
>>289320719>And it's not really a good manga for character focus. It has like one good character (dess) and that's it.And setting wise is both a mess and very unexplored, it's the kind of lazy fantasy that just has modern tropes but wants to pretend it's fantasy, like fujimine being and dressing like jirai kei.Fucking kagurabachi has explored its setting more.
>>289322141>Fucking kagurabachi hasTrue, though I'll add that kagurabachi despite being to some a(n ironic) meme, and also having pretty sparsely populated chapters due to the huge focus on pacing and cinematography and spectacle, is actually a pretty well thought-out manga (I haven't finished the first "big part" yet though) with a well-thought-out setting, it's not like kagurabachi is a low bar to compare to. The setting, characters, and story arcs really agree with each other well. The one thing I was a bit underwhelmed by at where I am is that the sword saint's character is pretty weak (again, so much of the manga is spent on cool battle frames) but I assume that's what the flashback coming up will fix.
shonen bump
>>289322141Though I'll also add that this is meant to be a friendly thread and I started off the wrong foot by calling a manga mediocre outright and so on. I'll do better next post.
>>289323021The sword saint is pretty good considering his limited screentime. He is well thought out as a character and his parallels to chihiro are well done.
>>289323133Is that so. Well, I'm not done reading the big arc yet, so I'll reserve my judgment a bit, but his character so far seems to me to be "I will fulfill my goal/motivations" and his motivations are too simple to really care about him. I don't find him super well thought out so far, and I assume the parallels you speak of will come up later since I'm like 15+ chapters behind
>>289323272Finish up part 1, most of his stuff comes from the very last stretch of part 1.
>>289323700Ah, sasuga da. Thanks.

>>289322141>>289323021>>289323133>>289323272>>289323700Stop talking to yourself, hag.
>>289324593Do get to it, the climax is amazing, akemura has at least as much personality/exposition as sojo/kyora and his goals are a riot.
>>289317274hitman reborn did it and it was terrible
>>289331491So are you going to spam lq versions of covers so this thread doesn't die?
I honestly think shounen is the best demographic.Seinen and josei have some awesome manga but none have made me feel (and think) as much as the best shounen manga. And shoujo is fine but the best ones are like Pride and Prejudice amongst the other Western Canon at best (usually), and gekiga is often jerked off to high heaven but often really it's just a more mature and gritty and realistic looking version of edgy repetitive or boring nonsense. No hate, no nothing, just my personal take (I'm low on sleep so I might have sounded hateful anyway, especially regarding gekiga, sorry).
>>289336113>shounen is the bestthis anon gets it, cheers
>>289336113>And shoujo is fine but the best ones are like Pride and Prejudice amongst the other Western Canon at best (usually),why is Pride and Prejudice catching strays?
>>289336113Which non-shonen magazines and which shonen magazines do you read? Have you genuinely never read a josei mag?
>>289326673Thanks! That's exciting to hear. I just read the chapter where the last page is a double spread of chihiro WATCHING.
>>289316562Shiina's new alt-history Taisho demon hunter series is alright
>>289305253The first volume or two can often be gotten for free or steeply discounted and catching up on a series via volumes is preferable over single chapters or magazine issues.
>>289318438Are the characters in this actually good (they feel "real")? I'm not doubting that it's a really epic and vast story with a colorful cast, but there's a certain artstyle I call the "modern autism artstyle" (the chief representative of which is Dandadan) and I haven't seen a single manga with human-feeling characters from any such artists, my theory is mangaka with this artstyle can't write in a naturally human way.>autism artstyle? what is that? The main traits consist of>overuse of overly polygonal shapes (e.g. sharp regular polygons) in the characters(/biological creatures)>very stiff angular posing>very dead, low-data facial expressions - by low-data I mean :| :D :(and the most distinctive trait>excessive usage of extremely regular parallel line hatching
>>289344269By the way, after you are done do post your opinions on it, get ready to root for akemura the moment you start reading the flashback.
>>289295233Yeah it's really fun
>>289336325Cheers>>289339022I give it a solid 4 (maybe sub-4) out of 5, I didn't mean to "smoke that Pride and Prejudice pack" as they say, it's just that compared to other (relatively few) novels from the western canon I read, P&P felt like I was literally reading a shoujo manga set in pre-victorian england>>289341655I haven't read a josei mag cover to cover but I've read a few josei manga and a bunch of non-shonen manga. My favorite josei is probably honey and clover (although that was formerly shoujo, then moved to a josei mag). I'm not counting natsume yuujinchou and aria as josei (iirc those are shoujo, could be wrong)
>>289329914Hitman reborn was really great though>>289317274Ideally it's not an editorial decision, but it can be awesome. That's ideal actually, I mean not the "becoming" part but rather mixing slice of life and serious moments (whether that's battle or melodrama)
>>289348828>iirc those are shoujo, could be wrong)How can you not tell the difference? Shojo has furigana, josei doesn't.
>>289317788Why are you making it seem like Saitou is a boomer just for doing what has kept Shonen Jump successful for half a century?
>>289317762>doesn't innovatePeople always say this, but is it really true? Can people easily name 5 shonen manga off the top of their heads, let alone 5 jump shonen manga, that are battle shonen, where the protagonist has a clear love interest (who also raised him as a kid, but this is too specific so we can drop this), confesses to her seriously with all his might (as opposed to naruto/sakura which stayed pretty much as gags to the end), and flatly got rejected in all sincerity? That one is the easiest example I can come up with but there may be better ones. The only arc of black clover that is completely non-innovative is the final arc imo. And the spade arc could have taken way more risks (I wish we actually got to travel to the underworld and also got a post-apocalyptic arc. Maybe Tabata considered those options but that was the peak of his physical and familial troubles.
>>289348828You don't really have to read them cover to cover, I only do that for less than a dozen mags myself (none of them josei). But you take note of the titles published in them and read a handful of series and one shots. That way you get a grasp what the specific publication is about since that tells more than those vague demographics.
