I really enjoyed this second episode. I love how these two keep supporting and pushing each other; it's a very cute dynamic. It was a given that the MC's brother was going to be a huge influence on him, but I'm surprised that he's also connected to basically every major character introduced so far. The dude must have been charismatic as fuck.

I know the new staff wanted a more realistic and gritty aesthetic to match the time period and the new show does still look fantastic, but I just prefer the original look. The original art was more detailed, had cleaner lines and just a more vibrant aesthetic. I prefer the look of pic related. The original feels more like phantom world and hyouka/evergarden in aesthetics and has more of that beauty aura where the art looks stunning to the point where it makes you wish you inhabited their fantasy world. I prefer raw detail and aesthetics over accuracy to the setting/time period or the inclusion of stupid low-brow facial gags. I hope they can return to the original style if this gets a movie or something. Akiko Takase could've done better with the designs if she was still around, though I'm happy that she's working on a masterpiece like Frieren.

This is antithetical to producing high quality work and Kyoani's studio philosophy. The industry sucks. Most anime studios are contracted to make dirt cheap 3dcg infested manga/LN ads. Kyoani make actual anime.
I rarely look ahead to see what's actually coming out, but I follow KyoAni's upcoming projects pretty closely just because I know I'll probably end up watching them, and a steampunk setting seemed pretty neat so I was looking forward to this in particular.

Publishers generally want to maximize profits and Kyoani want to maximize quality. If Kyoani adapt something from kadokawa they might make little to no profit. They can't pay their animators or improve their studio that way. It's shit and it's a dead end. That is the sad reality of it. I don't see why Kyoani should be forced to operate like that, it's good that they function differently than the other studios.
