>>289332623Now that I think about it, this sort of risk with one witch being to sole reliable figure in an apprentice's life is probably why watchers were introduced. A watchers sole porpoise is watching over the atelier. Not just for harm from outside but also harm from inside. If a witch were to abuse their power over the apprentices, a watcher would be right there to punish them for it and/or drag them to the knights.

Seemed kind of lame to conflate a peeping tom with an actual abuser. Not a fan of the black and white thinking here. All it does remove any nuance by resorting to such prejudgements. Especially combined with the mind wiping punishment. Felt much too extreme. Disappointing.

Reading the chapter again brought up another question. Is there really only one court that deals with SA in the witch world? That seems really inefficient, and in itself could be a reason why a lot of cases go unheard. Since victims may be less likely to report if they know there might not be a point.

Even though that guy was a perverted creep and deserved to be penalized...Isn't total mind erasure a little TOO extreme a sentence for what he did?I mean, that's basically no different from a full blown death sentence, which would normally be reserved for crimes like murders and genocide and full blown rape, like with the foul master in the flashback.I'm not trying to condone the creep's perverted peeping or his illegal magic usage, nor do I want to downplay the weight of sexual abuse and rape. but for a fantastic manga that has very clearly shown how unjust and unethical that mind wiping sentence is, it just seems a bit weird for it to suddenly directly condone it for a case like this

In social media, fans of the show has been passionately trying to sell queer people into watching this show because of gay ships like Arkco and Orufrey.I just want to confirm whether there is serious "will they won't they" played with either of these duos where everyone expects to be canon or is just fans shipping them because they accidentally happens to be gay rather than intentionally?
>>289333594>romacne>roamcne anon is having a stroke
>>289335255The series has a number of LGBTQ+ people and while it's not said clearly - Qifrey and Olly are a lot closer than just friends. It plays out as platonic but as the series goes on you see that it's probably more but It Is Complicated.
>>289335255Well, first of all. I apologize on behalf of the fandom if it sounded that way. I like the ships Arkco and Orufrey a lot, and I respect those who ship them. However, for the sake of expectations for the whole anime/manga itself, kind of no. No, because first of all, romance is not the central theme of the story, and it hasn't yet been confirmed whether there will be a romantic aspect to the main characters' relationships. "Kind of", because while I mentioned that it is not centered, there are minor characters in the story that have a romantic relationship with the same gender. There is also something about Orufrey that is more or less implied, though it's more of a spoiler if I tell more. And no, this does not mean the story baits you for the queerness of it all.
>>289332755Miyazaki just doesn't think much of sorcerers look at Sage Freke too.
>>289335255As a queer myself, there is definitely an element of queer in the air. Qifrey and Olruggio are in ‘there’s no heterosexual explanation for anything they do’ territory but nothing is confirmed beyond some pretty loud subtext. At the moment, it’s purely down to whether you pick up on the queer coding or you prefer them as very close friends. Optics wise, it’s two very close grown men living in the middle of nowhere raising four young girls. Take that how you will. Story wise, it’s very messy between them and no matter how you view them, they’re a very compelling duo.
>>289334585Perfection

>>289334580Faggots make their own stories and then you cry about those stories existing.
Faggot and Coco reads like a lesbian’s first crush and its hard to say if Coco feels the same or is just friendly (the true lesbian experience lol) but there’s a lot of hand holding and blushing going on in later chapters. The two of them have a lot of parallels to Qifrey and Olruggio, too.
>>289329062T-That sounds f-fun...
>>289335255There is a very canon gay couple that is treated as normal by things around them and the creator behind the series, Shirahama, is very progressive on social media. She’s been very vocal about supporting gay rights in Japan, as well as liking and supporting queer fan art.

>>289333594 Qifrey and Olly have a very deep relationship that is clearly more than platonic but it hasn't been confirmed to be romantic. Agott also has a pretty clear crush on Coco, and it's shown almost in parallel with a boy's crush and Coco's not exactly cold to Agott. Nothing's happened with either of the pairs, but it's not hard to see some signs. There's also a gay couple that's clearly shown to be in a relationship with zero ambiguity later on
>>289332755Mages will always overstep their boundries anon. No sense of right or wrong!
>>289336128Witch Hat Atelier is often read as queer because it prioritizes connection over compliance. It suggests that the "rules" of the world are often just arbitrary borders drawn by those in power, and that a truly magical life is found in the moments where we cross those borders to help one another.
>>289333594Witch hat atelier is not a romance manga. In the story there are literally only two confirmed couple, one of witch is a gay relationship (not orufrey), this is the main romantic relationship in the story (the other straight couple has literally only half a page of screentime together). Therefore the author is definitely not just queerbating. As for orufrey and arkco, neither of them a canon (at least not yet). Aggot is implied to have developed a crush on Coco, but right now, imo, is definitely one sided. Orufrey have veeery deep and complex relationship and they are definitely closers that just friends, but that doesn't mean there anything romantic going on. also the author never put them in compromising situation or anything that could be considered "queerbating". The way the characters and their relationship are written is clearly essential to the plot (like very important, especially in orufrey case) and it's not just to bait the readers. So no there's not queerbating. That said it's true that Shirahama sensei (the author) has share and liked fanart of the ships on Twitter.
>>289336128You gotta crack a few eggs before you can make an omelette.
Y'all throw around the term "queerbait" far too casually.

Neither are a canonical pairing at the moment, no. I don't think it count as queerbating, but as queercoding.

I really appreciate how this fandom is not hostile to shipping and faggots in general
>>289335905Obviously massively helped by the manga itself! But I've seen tons of cases where even if the original work is queer friendly, a non insignificant chunk of the fan base is weirdly homophobic.
>>289330717Make sure at least a few of them have guides on how to make explosives.
>>289330717I'm glad you feel like this, but we're having an influx of that kind of people right now because of the anime. In general, anime watchers tend to be much more homophobic in my experience since it reaches a wider public.
Yeah that's the sad bit. Luckily I don't interact much with the anime only crowd, but I hope when they realize just how diverse this manga truly is they leave. I know they will once WHA is not the popular anime of the moment, same happen with dunmeshi and a ton of other anime
>>289336462This but don't use the anarchist's cook book that's a glowy psyop.
>>289336534Its very prevalent as of lately way I've seen is the "why can't two men/women just be friends" rethoric, sometimes changed to the "omg they're just best friends" type. Which while it could be construed as annoyance at shippers shipping everything, it's nearly always targeted at queer ships.
>>289336551Im a Jojo fan, and with the release of the newest anime, people have been popping up complaining that people are shipping Johnny and Gyro (the main characters) together. Many arguments of "they're just friends, why can't men just be friends, stop making it weird". These people don't ever say the same things towards other similar pairings that are heterosexual, like that of Part 8 of the manga. That and while it's not the majority, there's a weird undercurrent of hostility towards anyone who ships characters of the same gender together, despite "Jojo is gay" being a very common joke. This all despite Araki himself being very accepting, and now having a canonically, confirmed bisexual character in the latest parts.
>>289336534no hate crimes in this community! just war crimes. heinous, godforsaken war crimes.
>>289336583Im sorry to say this as a Jojo 's fan, but the fan base is insufferable. Male friendships are everywhere. Gay male couples are not.
Honestly for this story specifically the bit about two women/men being just friends is really funny considering the two fan favorite ships directly have parallels with romantic mythology in universe.

as a gay man myself who really adores qifrey and olruggio as characters and as a ship it's just nice to be in a community where it feels largely accepted and supported. queer characters shouldn't have to have a big neon blinking sign that reads "I'M GAY" for people to notice coding. :')

>>289337395This is unironically a real thing that people used to do, even without magic. It's called a forever soup. And basically the idea is that you just keep cooking the same pot forever, and you keep refilling it for as much as you take out, and the water that cooks out. people used to run these pots for several years at a time, as a contemporary way of preserving food long-term, before refrigeration. The reason why it works is that bacteria can typically only survive around room temperature. And cooking temperature is a thing, because that's the temperature that is known to kill off bacteria, pathogens, parasites, and every other known food taint. As long as you maintain the coking temp, and you don't let it drop to room temp, you can theoretically just keep the same pot of soup going for eternity. real science

>>289344990Coco could have just flown up with her shoes, but she was not a skilled flier. It was a talent thing, more than a willpower thing. Also the Dadah Range was much higher than her house. There is definitely more to the foot seals than them just blasting at full power at all times, however. Probably some amount of foot articulation effects how the seals function, and that is how you control flight. Because most magic seems too automatic for willpower to influence.

>>289346248Witch Hat Atelier is also very PG-13 even by manga standards, like there's blood during fight scenes but it's fairly light on anything genuinely graphic compared to say Demon Slayer. The rape backstory is actually fairly heavy and real compared to every other dark or dramatic moment that had occurred to that point, the fucked up moment in the story beforehand was a kid slowly and painfully transforming into a furry, which is still something you could hypothetically see in a Disney movie, but not nobles molesting little witch girls.

>>289329062Sure, I know programming will that help?
What's the timescale of Witch Hat's world? If magics been around for like several thousands of years why haven't muggles made machines and stuff unless they rely exclusively on Witches?
>>289347761Very hard to say. We're at least several generations deep since the Pact was signed, because certain bloodlines have become notable and established in certain fields. But muggles do basically rely on witches for help all the time. Why invent something when magic is so much better?
>>289347863If humans are not allowed to invent, they stagnate. the fuck do they do then? Just grow food, do medicine, and trade? What specifically are witches allowed to do that humans can do better? Despite not having gotten to the current end of the mango I'm starting to see some cracks in the foundation that are interesting to think about. At what point are witches not just social workers to Muggles?
>>289347968Witches don't go to war. That is one thing that muggles keep for themselves. Witches also do not appear to randomly go out into the world to fix problems. For example, pollution on one area created a slum, but Witches didn't fix it. Ostensibly because they weren't asked to.In another case, we know that bandits exist on the roads in this setting, and witches do not provide defense against them. But yes, Witches take taxes and then they provide social services to Muggles. They live in rich little enclaves where no one worries about food or shelter.
>>289348168So what actual reason do witches need to help muggles for? Is that the pact? I understand they don't have muggles learn magic because they'd just use it for war, but then why interact with muggles at all? It's probably true you can't avoid contact with them because the world a big place and people live in it but if witches sorta value the balance of the world why not just go up to world muggle leaders and MIB them to forget about war?
>>289348260>So what actual reason do witches need to help muggles for? Is that the pact?Yes, they're trying to maintain a social equilibrium so they can live in peace consistently. But the truth, that even witches acknowledge, is that magic can just mog everyone & everything and if muggles were to genuinely internalize that (which they're starting to ever since their own king knelt to them) instead of seeing witches as benevolent hyperuseful social workers then things would go to shit really fast.
>>289348260The whole pact seems to be the brainchild of a small number of 'enlightened extremists' who overwrote the old world and segregated witches out from muggles entirely. Backstory says that it used to be the norm for Witches to just be part of society and to ally themselves with monarchs or possibly rule themselves.Part of this is a condescending human zoo view of humanity where the Witches act as external observers that don't interfere in human politics directly, but try and objectively provide assistance to all nations equally. Without just trying to make the world into a utopia without struggle. Basically letting the silly muggles run themselves while providing ample resources from the outside like you would watch an exhibit of fat gibbons at the zoo.
>>289348420>>289348474Obviously meant for you
>>289348420>>289348474And forbidden magic isn't just a class of magic it's magic that disturbs this strange equilibrium then? So what is it the Mystery Brimmers want? Just free use of all magic for everyone or for magic supremacy to reign again? Or is that something with no answer yet?
>>289332371>the replies for this postIs this place filled with faggots and wom*n?
>>289336768At least Iguin lets you figure it out for yourself. Kitty Man's whole MO is "IT'S TATTOO TIME" and just ruins your life.
>>289348611They want different things, apparently. One seems to be trying to chase advanced medical magic. One seems to hate the hypocrisy of the Pact. One turned themselves into an abomination or was turned into one and had no choice otherwise. One just wanted to use magic to enrich himself so he could buy more medical treatment. They're less a movement and more vaguely aligned egoists.
>>289348681What exactly does iguan want with Coco then? I'm at about chapter 30 but all that's really said is that she's important and a savior. If magic can be learned by anyone and coco is a muggle, what exactly would she be better at doing than anyone else?
>>289348611The Brims want the current "meta" of magic society to change but also see the folly in just burning it down and starting over because that's what the Pact did and why they're in this mess to start with. To that end: >>289348743Iguin sees Coco as the perfect ambassador for that idea as she's spent her life idolizing what she couldn't have because of the system and entered it with that context. She's effectively Wizard Lenin being sent to Magic Russia.
>>289348743Coco represents their greatest breakthrough at chipping away at the Pact, basically she's the "exception" in that she's a muggle who was actually allowed to stay and become a witch, and will continue to create more exceptions like the Counterclock device (which normally would have been forbidden and never utilized had there not been extraordinary circumstances) that will the Pointed Caps' monopoly on magic.
>>289348802God i hope not. Lenin ended up bringing something far worse than what it replaced, even if it was 'better'. I doubt all the people Stalin killed would think of it as better but I digress.
>>289348611>>289348681Brimhats are basically just cartoon villains who want the world to revert to the old status quo simply because of pride. Only one member so far has actually expressed genuine grievance over the injustice of the status quo but every other member seems to be only in it to show off their cool unique powers and how that makes them better than everyone else.
>>289348837>>289348802Something bothered me about the conehead police hat I might have missed in the beginning. Why not just wipe Coco's mind and send her on her way to somebody elses family if she's a cognito hazard to the pact? If everyone knows she's an outsider and had some forbidden shit happen to her, why even allow her to keep on going?Or is the forbidden magic aspect of her circumstances unknown because Qifrey is covering her tracks by mind wiping people and putting "do not enter" signs on her home?
>>289348943Qifrey buried the fact that she was the cause of it, as far as most people know Coco was just the victim of forbidden magic which is technically true.
CUTE
>>289348743Coco isn't special because she is more magically adept or has a special power or anything. Iguin is simply better on an outsider shaking up the system from within because she lacks the indoctrination that every other witch has about magic. The pointed hats vs brimmed cap ideological conflict has been going on for ages, and its not going anywhere. Its settled into a cold war status quo, and there are no winning moves on the field. From Iguin's perspective: the situation is shitty, and will continue to be shitty because there's no way out of it.If the pointed caps won't solve it, and the brimmed caps can't solve it, then a third option is needed. Coco is a blank slate who has no inherent loyalty to the pact, but also isn't tainted by brim hat ideology. This is why Iguin presents Coco with challenges but does not enforce solutions on her as the 'correct answer' to his tests. He doesn't want to, indeed CAN NOT, give her the answer. Because what he wants is for Coco to show HIM the way out of this mess in the end. Everything before that is just training her up to understand the wonder and horror of magic, as well as the limits of the pact and why it can't go on like this but without trying to push a specific solution onto her because he genuinely don't have one. He is giving her the foundation so that one day, when she is ready, he can pose her the question: "What do you think we should do? Don't you think the pact is bullshit? But the age of war and chaos is also undesirable. What is our third path?"
>>289348943>Why not just wipe Coco's mind and send her on her way to somebody elses family if she's a cognito hazard to the pact?Because Qifrey is motivated to keep her around for his own revenge based reasons, and he secured permission to take Coco on as an apprentice from one of the three sages that rule the magical world. If it wasn't for Beldaruit's influence and him and Qifrey being able to ask him for a favor like this, Coco likely would have just been mindwiped. Indeed, Easthis has been itching to do it since the moment he met her.

>>289348912Iguin has very high level motivations and appears to really love magic itself. Sasaran is a prick. Restys/Lestisse is doing medical experiments and their apprentice, Ininia seems to be driven by spite for the world abandoning her. Engendale was taught some secret magic by a Brimmed Cap, but didn't have an connection to the group or philosophy, being entirely self-centered.
>>289349491>Restys/Lestisse is doing medical experiments and their apprentice, Ininia seems to be driven by spite for the world abandoning her. While I don't really trust Lestisse based on their demeanor, so far it does *seem* like they are focused purely on medical applications of magic using the silverwood seeds, and Ininia is mostly angry that the witches had the ability to help people and threw that away. Which is honestly kind of fair. Even Qifrey admits that the Knights Moralis exterminated an entire organization of medical witches and destroyed their research because it colored outside of the lines of the pact. Imagine if you had cancer and you found out that there was a cure for cancer but the government destroyed it because it violated copyright law or something. You'd be FURIOUS.
>>289349602>Imagine if you had cancer and you found out that there was a cure for cancer but the government destroyed it because it violated copyright law or something. You'd be FURIOUS.Don’t look up current events in the medical or energy fields
>>289349491Why even have other brimmers then
>>289350691They'll probably give insights into other reasons to break from the pact. One looks like she could be Agott's mother. But that could just be shared wavy hair.
>>289350950It would make sense to be Agotts mom, since that explains why she has a full-body obfuscation instead of just a mask, and having a mole inside of the tower of tomes would be a massive boon for the brimhats to both get access to rare books and hide their tracks. It might even be that she came up with an excuse to kick Agott out of the tower to keep her daughter away from her spy shit, either to further protect her secrecy against accidental discovery or so that if she ever gets caught her daughter would be free from suspicion. That said, if that woman is Agott's mom I have to assume that Sasaran had no idea who Agott was when he threatened to tattoo her, and if that had actually happened she would have snapped him in half.
>>289351060Sasaran didn't know who Qifrey was, despite Iguin have a close watch on him. Good communication skills are a Cone Hat spook.

I have a theory that the Memory Erasing spell doesn't actually erase them, but actually sends them to another item - most likely the hat that Sussy Brimcap is wearing. It's a way more sinister tool but the Pointed caps have forgotten it's nature. So he or she is basically just getting the knowledge of all "forbidden" spells that Knights keep erasing.
