Dragon ball feels like such a fever dream when you think about its progression from slice of life adventure to literal aliens and space hitler, I dont think there is any shonen that has such a drastic difference between how it started and what it progresses into, maybe HxH and JoJo but it isnt as radical of a change

>>289329493Im not talking about the power creep aspect, but one piece, naruto and bleach all stayed grounded in the universe they first introduced you to (e.g pirates vs marines, becoming hokage, soul society)the dragon balls became such an irrelevant part of the story as it progressed
>>289329604>one piece, naruto and bleach all stayed grounded in the universe they first introduced you toBleach perhaps, but One Piece and Naruto?
>>289329604Dragon balls are merely a plot device and they still are in important in every arc, seeing as how they bring people back from the dead. They’re technically the main focus of Namek, king Piccolo saga and the Saiyan saga. Besides, Dragon ball had an absurd world from the start with talking animals and unique technology like capsules and the dragon balls themselves. It gives Toriyama leeway to do whatever he wants. We later learn there’s a guardian in the sky watching earth. There’s no rule that says the DB world can’t have aliens and stuff. It was only an adventure series for literally the first arc and even in that arc you had shapeshifting animals and goku turning into a giant ape
>>289329654Luffy still wants to be the pirate king, he is still going from one island to another fighting pirates and marines, the only thing that changed is the power levelNaruto too, it was still grounded in what we were introduced to, maybe near the end it gets wacky with the Otsusuki shit but that only happens as a bad recton and is quite irrelevantDragon ball just reaches a certain point and tells you the protagonist you have been following is actually an alien, not saying there was no foreshadowing that Goku is built different, but it was such a drastic turn from what the story was like before. Its like going from the hunter exam arc to the succession war arc and trying to understand what the fuck happened to HxH
>>289329330HxH is soft seinen
>>289329854There were already way weirder things than Goku. There was no reason to believe he was anything other than a human who just happened to have a tail when there are are literal animal people everywhere.
>>289329854earth felt huge in db yet it feels very small in dbz
>>289330104You're soft retarded
>>289330696>t.
>>289329330My favorite thing in DB is how time progressess. In most shounenshit the MC begins the story as a kid or teenager and ends it as a high school graduate or young adult, meanwhile Goku is still the only MC in his own genre that begins the story as a kid and ends it as a grandfather. And it's all because Toriyama wanted to give him an adult body to make the fights easier to draw.

>>289329330>I dont think there is any shonen that has such a drastic difference between how it started and what it progresses intoHitman Reborn? Slice of life gag high school manga that hard transitions into a battle manga. One of the later arcs literally has them travel to the future
>>289331266Toriyama is shit at making this progress feel natural though, he abused the fuck out of timeskips to avoid having to actually write anything.
>>289332074>>289331266>3 years between Daimao and Piccolo Jr>5 years between Piccolo and Raditz>3 years between Mecha Freeza and Dr Gero >7 years between Cell and Majin BuuWonder why they didn't make more filler or movies set in these time gaps
>>289332074nah timeskips in dragon ball work because they are an after thought and Toriyama respects the fact that time is a natural thing so he continued writing the story without being overwhelmed by itlook at one piece after Oda's first attempt at a time-skip, it completely changed how people perceived OP and it decreased its quality (desu most of why sucked at first was due to how utterly long dressrosa became)
>>289331374Didn't this also happen to Tar-chan? Power levels are a contagious disease.
>>289335911Otokojuku was another victim of the comedy to action manga pipeline
>>289329493Who edited this? It used to look funnier
>>289329604Even in the classic phase Dragon Ball was meant to be a manga about anything without a truly solidified theme tieing everything together because Toriyama wanted to distance himself from the JttW roots. It's also why everyone hated when Naruto introduced aliens while in DB that same thing felt like natural progression.
