Akira was mediocrity on the level of Spriggan and being immortalized as a cinematic spectacle was more than it could have hoped for.
There was an adaptation of the Akira manga announced years ago. Blame Sunrise for not being able to actually finish it apparently since it hasn't been talked about at all anytime recently. Also you should know that quality of manga has nothing to do with whether it's adapted or not.
