I've seen screencaps of it posted, but never any serious discussion

If it's made before 2000, it's not worth watching.

Serious answers please

No. It's genuinely outdated by now and is only liked by pretentious redditors who didn't watch this shit either.

I’ve only watched the first few seasons Die Neu Thesis and I’ve read the first book but, all that I’ve seen so far of the LOTGH universe is very compelling. It’s about a massive galactic war that’s been going on for generations and the many people swept up, shaped, made, and destroyed in it. I will eventually get around to reading all the books and watching this series as well.

You've somehow missed a lot of the serious discussion threads then. Sometimes there are threads with dozens of screencaps and serious discussion takes place between them. Legend of the Galactic Heroes' OVA release is one of the best-written character-driven stories in anime. It's thorough, nuanced, entertaining, and both easy to get into while being genuinely highbrow. You'll likely enjoy My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars and the 110 episodes of the OVA.

Pic related, though I saved this years ago, before I even watched the series myself. You should be good with the first film and the OVA series.

Absolutely. Sure it was done on a shoestring budget, and it shows. It may be too janky looking, depending on the taste. But the story is sompelling, character designs are stellar, cast is terrific.
If you can't stand the way old shows look, ou can try Die Neue Thesis, the repake. But it's incomplte and judging by the speed they're making it, it won't be done untill 2040 or something.

Man, that is an old red chart. The books have been in English for years. It’s also doesn’t mention Dis Neu Thesis, which has also been out for a decade now.
A genuine oldfag. I kneel

I'm convinced that you people are stalking me. The moment I finally decided to watch LoGH I kept seeing threads about it multiple times.

I only started watching anime recently with Akira. That's my starting point. I'm looking for "serious" stuff (no moe shit)

It's a good anime for people that hate generic anime slop. It feels like a Politics 101 college course, so it's not gonna blow your mind with the concepts but it's leagues better than most anime. I was surprise how well-paced most of the series is. The cast is fairly diverse, with only 2-3 characters really being the same. What sucks is that the animation was updated for some episodes/scenes for non-laserdisk releases because of the quality (pic related). Watch with the fansubs not the crunchyroll translation.

Personal gripes was with the Terrarist subplot, the pacing was a bit slow in S1 & S4, and them dropping the 2 grunts story in S1 with them being the only real loose-end story wise.

NTA but here's like one of the old recommendation lists from /a/ pre-2016. If you want nothing but "mature" anime series then I'd recommend:
>Cowboy Bebop / Samurai Champloo, the classic mature anime that get recommended, it's like recommending Star Wars if you asked for a SciFi movie.
>Planetes, Space Garbage Men the anime, does a really good job with organic world building because it's basically a SciFi SoL
>Black Lagoon, a very "mature" anime if you think Violence and Swearing makes you feel grown up, dub is actually good.
>Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, WORDS WORDS WORDS and Geopolitics in a cyberpunk future. The movie was a bit more philosophical but still great, ironically the newest anime is closer to the manga which is a lot more comedic/ecchi
>Welcome to the NHK, NEETdom the anime, personally like the manga more.
>Sonny Boy, it's less focused on the kids with superpowers and more about the MC's personal growth
>Pluto, an adaptation of an Astro boy's arc, by the guy who made Monster(also good), stylized as a scifi thriller/mystery. A bit heavy handed on its opinions of the US invasion of Iraq, manga is just as good.
>anything by Satoshi Kon

Are the remakes worth it or should I just ignore them.

ignore

If you watch the original series, you can safely ignore the remakes, They have their own merits, but it's the same story, and they have modern look, which may be a turn-off for some.
Cast is great though.

What do you guys think of the OG novels? Is it the definitive way to experience LOGH? I finished the OVA almost a decade ago so I'm thinking of reading them myself sooner or later.
