The purpose of this character was to make Nobara's heart skip a beat when she denied having feelings for Yuji.

This girl's crush on Yuji was entirely superficial, and meeting him again made her realize that. Yuji never had feelings for her, he just admired her elegant handwriting and chopstick skills. That's not a romantic feeling. Look at Yuji's face in the photo he took with her. He's totally confused, uncomfortable and worried about why she wants a picture with him. Because he doesn't know her and he doesn't feel anything for her, but he doesn't want to be rude.

At the time when Nobara fought Mahito, she didn't love Yuji romantically, but she viewed him as a friend, and that's not something Nobara grants lightly. It is a big step towards future romantic feelings.

I'm fine with it. She's there to show Yuji still has some connection to some kind of normalcy. Them being unconfirmed even post time skip might feel bad, but I'd rather have that than having the story force a relationship.
