Volume 16, done. Today we found out why Qifrey was such a weird and irresponsible guy. His life literally depended on stressing himself out constantly. It'd be interesting to see how he coped with staying alive before Coco showed up and the Atelier was very peaceful. Young Olruggio was an insane little boy. Today we tied off a lot of loose ends. So, what I've reading out of that conversation with Qifrey is that we've got the next two arcs lined up: one that fills the bulk of the winter, which will probably be MOSTLY a breather arc after the non stop gut punching that was Silver Eve and its aftermath. Something relatively cozy and gets back to classic Atelier adventures while the pieces move into position for the next major arc.And then we get test 3 and the tower of tomes back to back. An arc which promises both major plot advancement (Coco advancing as a witch and getting her chances to find the spellbook she's been looking for all along) and what will certainly be an Agott-centric arc as its pretty much unthinkable that it won't involve her mother once Coco gets to the tower itself. This arc probably won't be as long as Silver Eve but its going to inherently be a major plot crux moment, because whatever happens here has to define all that comes after. Either Coco can't get ahold of the book from the tower, or she can. Either way, Coco's path to victory has to either advance majorly or be redefined, perhaps even meaning that she has to actively seek out Iguin. Because if she can't get a copy of the book to get the details of the spell, the only other way to get that specific spell is to ask Iguin himself. Which could easily turn into the 'take a walk on the dark side' arc people want to see where Coco hangs out with the brims for a bit.
"Its an expression of pain" applies to so many characters in this manga holy shit.

Her mom lives/works there and otherwise almost never leaves, its sort of a 'now or never' deal. Figuring out a way to burn out the parasitic silverwood wouldn't just save Qifrey, it saves Custas as well. Maybe Ininia, but thats got its own complications. Point being, Olruggio has powerful motivation to find a solution to the problem and is known to be a prodigy, he just never has the chance to actually work on this problem. Him getting that chance, perhaps because Coco tells him about Qifrey's secret, would be a satisfying way to resolve this once and for all. But it can't work unless Qifrey remains in the dark about it.
