>>289353154I don't usually care for comedy anime but Patlabor on TV made me laugh a lot
>>289353154I've been kinda wanting to get into Patlabor too. I was just going to watch in release order.
>>289360478Movie 1 and 2 are excellent but extremely light on mecha action, it's almost like an anti mecha anime. Gundam fans will fucking hang themselves in the first 30 minutes. The TV series is very cheaply animated but has some mecha related action in every episode. The OVAs are a good watch too. Same studio as the TV so the animation is better with OVA budget but not amazing.Patlabor movie 3 is fucking weird. Not a bad film, but barely Patlabor related and even less mecha action than the first two.Never watched anything else Patlabor.Overall a quality hard science fiction mecha franchise, better than Macross in my opinion and Gundam, is, well, Gundam.
In one of the episodes you can see a news crew flying what looks to be a Kamov Ka-27 helicopterBased, coaxial rotors are just fucking superior

>>289363415And this is why rutracker is the best
>>289363457But I like the movies...
After watching everything from Patlabor except the newest EZY shit and that 16-eps long OVA (I'm midway through currently), I can say that I'd enjoy this anime more of it wasn't marketed as a mecha show. It's rather anti-mecha when it comes to classic mecha themes and their execution. If yow put this aside, this anime becomes rather fun to watch. Patlabor has a cool design, but that's it. GitS has more mecha elements than Patlabor.
>>289363492Robot police squad to deal with robot crimes is an excellent premiseGITS is all about them spider tanks Patlabor is humanoid mecha
>>289363479The third one was okay
>>289363524The premise is great, I agree. The execution is also fun. But I'm rather talking about the marketing. Mecha crimes, mecha police fighting with mecha against mecha, while the anime itself is rather grounded, filled with comedy, slice of life of the unit giant robots. Giant robots are one of background's elements to a very nicely done anime in general. That's what bugged me. Imagine if you'd see GitS described as "cyberpunk mecha", ignoring all elements that are more important than these several scenes with Tachikoma.
>>289363571The third one sucked...>>289363574Patlabor is the realest of "real robot" genre and that's why I like itI also enjoy Battletech/Mechwarrior for the same reason although weeaboos will hate it
>>289363524Spider tanks > mecha. But cops dealing with robots is great, yeah.
>>289363666https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHoCPtWaCtwPatlabor has spider tanks tooGetting fucked on by conventional weaponry by the looks of things
>>289363524You'll also like Dominion Tank Police and Bubblegum Crisis if you like Patlabor.
>>289363613The third one is the only one that didn't deal in 2 hours of boring government agency politics. In one of the movies, 1 or 2, I can't remember, the actual Patlabors weren't hardly in it even until the last 15 minutes.
>>289363785Didn't really enjoy the Dominion OVA, not Shirow's finest work imoNever checked out Bubblegum Crisis
>>289363825And the third movie also doesn't have mecha action until the very end what's your point
>>289363613I like real robot genre, but I wouldn't call Patlabor as such. Patlabors, their technology and shit, are all somewhere in the background, usually appearing in the last minutes of an ep.
>>289363666>>289363744lollmao even
>>289363744>>289363884I'm not trying to say GITS > Patlabor, I'm simply saying spider tanks > mecha.
>>289363894Spider tanks are probably more practical because they present a smaller target and aren't as vulnerable to getting legs blown offWhat's for example an Ingram gonna do if someone shoots its leg off, start crawling?
>>289363839But it has monster tits
>>289363894>>289363934Battletech has taught me that tanks have treads that can be blown off, a crew that can be stunned and a turret that can jam, and if powered by internal combustion engines as opposed to fusion reactors then that's another failure pointMech major failure points are headshots (where the pilot is located), legs which can just fall off and ammunition storage which can detonate the entire mech because Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment is lost technology
>>289360672saying the first two movies are "light on mecha action" when both have the best and most iconic Ingrid scenes in the series is an interesting claim.
>>289363934I'm not even trying to talk about the technology (mecha are absurd though beyond the powered armor scale). I just think spider tanks are cooler. It's a more interesting, creative idea. It's not just "what if we made a person, but big?" and a bunch of bullshit handwavium to make it work somehow backwards from there. Spider tanks are at least trying to solve a real problem. I don't think it's a practical solution since they're putting way too much weight onto too small an area, but if they can get wide enough feet then something that can just step over obstacles is a neat idea. There's a reason why everybody still uses wheels or treads. Wheels or treads are really good. But if you want to get away from wheels or treads, I think something that looks like a bug is better than something that looks like a giant person just for the novelty. We don't make cars that look like people with wheels. They look like something else.
>>289364070Mecha scenes in the first movie's 20 minute or so action climax and the run time is 90 minutes (actually it's 100 minutes) so it's pretty goodMecha secen in the second movie is literally 10 minutes long and the run time is... 213 minutes... oh dear
>>289364070 anything from the movies gets blown out the water by griffon's scenes imo
>>289364136I personally hate the whole black labor saga because it's dumb and only exists to sell toys (hey, it worked for gundam)
>>289364122>213 minutesI meant 113 minutes of course213 is more like watching Apocalypse Now bootleg workprint
>>289364119https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FF21zT4_5MEHonestly at the scale Tachimkoma/Fuchikomas operate old fashioned Power Armor would be more practical, but Shirow makes them OP as fuck able to scale buildings and operate autonomously with motherfucking thermoptic camo on top
>>289364435The combination of legs with wheels (or balls) on the end is pretty cool, too. Best of both worlds, really. Speed when you need it (and it would be a lot quieter not stomping around), and then the ability to walk where wheels don't work so well, combined with the ability to balance and raise/lower legs as required and not need a turret for the gun. The weight is probably too crazy, but still a fun idea that looks almost like it could work on screen. I'm able to suspend my disbelief even when they're jumping around, and the animators make them look like they have real weight too.
>>289360672>Gundam fans will fucking hang themselves in the first 30 minutes.nigga what, the latest gundam thing has like two mecha scenes total over two hours, that's par for course
>>289353383>ok first episode >2nd is mostly forgettable beside kanuka's introduction>3rd is sea kaiju episode with anti climactic end>4, 5 and 6 are top tier>7 is also nothing of note cause most of the staff went to work on the films.Early Days is easily the weakest entry in the franchise barring the 3rd film.
>>289354152Patlabor's 'action' (outside of films) is mostly slow lumbering labors moving like your alzheimer grandpa. It's not high octane sakuga fest with crazy movements, so you don't miss much in the manga, not to mention fighting is the least interesting aspect of the franchise.

>>289363492Execution I can agree with you, but Imma need you to elaborate on what Patlabor does with it's themes that makes it different from Votoms, Macross, or Gundam
>>289365801Not him but Patlabor mechs are always breaking, malfunctioning and causing unintended chaos. A lot of screen time is devoted to their maintenance as well. The plot of the entire 1st movie is Mandatory Software Updates Bad (predating Windows 10 by how many years?). Stiff like that makes Patlabor pretty distinct in the mecha genre.
>>289364122japs don't just consider robots for mecha, it refers to many other mechanical aspects like JSDF tanks, helicopters, fighter planes in the 2nd film.
>>289365854Doesn't that fall into execution? Idk about the AUs since I don't really care for Gundam outside of UC much, but the mechs are almost always framed as a necessary evil and the world would have been a better place had they never been invented, with Victory as like the biggest >here nigga damnframing of it. For Patlabor they never really call the existence of labors themselves into question, so it feels in-universe it's moreso just another tool like cop cars or guns compared to how much the other shows revolve around their mechs. At least that's my opinion on how Patlabor differs

>>289365735 oh yeah i read oshii's thoughts about that on /m/ the other day >anime to be a product, you absolutely need those kinds of perfect characters. A girl who loves mecha and exists for no reason. If you touch on that, lightning strikes. Just adding a shadow to Noa's cheek causes a huge uproar and complaints come from all over. Like Lum from "Urusei Yatsura," she's a harbinger of bad luck... that's an exaggeration, but she's a character that's better left alone. What I've learned as I've gotten older is that you should just leave those kinds of characters on the altar. That way, no one will make a fuss, the fans will be happy, and I can do what I want to do. As soon as I made that decision and did it, I felt relieved. I decided that I didn't want the main character, Noa-chan, to cause any trouble, so I should just put her on the altar. Don't touch her at all. Leave her alone and don't get involved unnecessarily. https://www-yk-rim-or-jp.translate.goog/~rst/rabo/news/oshii2.html?_x_tr_sch=http&_x_tr_sl=ja&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp it makes me wonder how often he gets angry dealing with purists whenever he does a Tmolos Sengoku Dogs reimagining

>>289366195
>>289366221I'd rather a Kanuka but Asuma is disgusted by her amerifart upbringing
>>289366149Gundam is a too large of a franchise to paint in one broad stroke. Their portrayal of MS differs from story to story, some portray them as monstrous kaijus like in Hathaway, other times it being a miracle machine is kind of the point, which still doesn't solve the complex political issues of their world.
>>289366287I've seen parts of some Gundam OVAs (war in the pocket and the jungle warfare one) but I'm by no means an expert. More indifferent to the franchise than anything. I know it's the OG Real Robot show and as such Patlabor's grand pappy. Also the Zakus are cool.
>>289366182There was a hypothetical floating around /m/ a few months ago about how Oshii would do a "proper" Patlabor 3, and apparently he originally had in mind a scenario of someone within the group orchestrating attacks on domestic nuclear power plants. Goto is the only one who fits the bill and I think it'd be funny if even though he has a good reason for it, it's all because he got cucked at the end of Movie 2, which directly counters >>289365712

>>289372309Meant for >>289372146
>>289372056That's what I meant, by the 2nd OVA (which buttons out the TV series) it's semi implied that they're more than friends, and in the last episode he takes her to see his brother's grave and opens up to her more than he ever has, with the implication that they're going to be serious from now on.Also despite how it's marketed, the timelines in Patlabor don't really matter. The second movie is clearly working off of some of the character and relationship development that the TV series provided.
>>289370708>>289372146Noa's arc kind of follows from TV and New Files where she gets a lot of character development. People who get memed into only following OVA continuity (Early Days and 1st film) and skipping TV continuity miss that. Patlabor 2 was supposed to be the ending animated work of the franchise at the time. Somebody who jumps from 1st film to 2nd without going through TV, like it was released, is bound to feel that they assassinated Noa's character.

Not a bad film, but barely Patlabor related and even less mecha action than the first two.Almost as if it wasn't a Patlabor movie with a Patlabor logo slapped on later, innit.Wouldn't mind it that much if they didn't go with OC characters for no reason. A (regular) police detective was already established in the series, but for whatever reason they introduced a new feller and even gave him some backstory involving Goto. Truly does feel like an afterthought.>>289363744Wasn't fucked by conventional weaponry, but by red tape and politics.>>289366808Wasn't the two-parter from the original OVA villain just that, a Goto-turned-evil? Not sure if I remember correctly, but they were academy/army buddies, got disillusioned yet went on separate routes?Goto ain't one to become terrorist.Just like Ota ain't one to end up in jail.

>>289390878>grooming up
>>289389541Why do they have a patlabor-sized spas-12 that only works in pump-action?
>>289392072Why wouldn't they? I mean, it is the police force and Nip police have all this silly (from an american perspective, innit) philosophy about guns and firing in public. It's quite literally a scaled up riot gun, that's used like a riot gun normally. Also, the other guns used are, again, scaled up (to 20mm AFAIR) service revolvers, with, like, 6 shots in them.
>>289392072Safety and accountability
>>289392202>>289393644Yeah but why aren't they using it in semi-auto mode? Are they firing low pressure ammo?
>>289395468Not sure if actual canon or not, but it'd be safe to assume the upscaled, spas copy don't have semi-auto mode at all.

>>289389267She's competent and reliable, that's sufficiently maternal, I want to rely on her!
>Nooo you can't have a cushy office job at a promising start-up, you have to keep risking your life on a daily basis because our neighbors are nice! Not a pretty picture of married life
>>289389267Why does Kanuka look more Asian than the actual Japanese characters? Isn't she supposed to be an American?
>>289355538As per the webms, Ota's definitely a fucking retard but his heart is generally in the right place, and at least when he's calm, he's decently skilled enough when he's calm, e.g. he's somehow amazing at target practice, and the show notes that it's surprisingly difficult to hit a moving target. I initially didn't like him either, but he gets some good moments, whether it's him as a pilot or as a human bean.
>>289398832You're right. I've been liking Ota and everyone else more as the series has gone on. I've definitely become attached to the whole division already. I've only yet to warm up to Kumagami since she was just introduced and she seemed a bit too perfect, but I didn't expect her to be so afraid of ghosts. That was kind of cute.
>>289399130I finished the show recently, I'm glad you're having a good time. Kumagami's okay, initially she felt like just a replacement Kanuka but she's definitely cute in episodes like the one in your pic, and I know she has an interesting moment way later, either in a movie or the post-show OVA. She's not my favourite but I do appreciate that there's some career woman who decided to come to Division 2 and is also the next person to keep Ota in check. Also shout-out to Hiromi being voiced by Daisuke Gori, I feel miserable whenever I recognize the poor guy's voice, but couldn't recognize him at all voicing this gentle giant. Usually the giants he voices are extremely ungentle.

>>289392072it's just an 870 with a fancy stock
>>289390878 masami yuki's character art is quite good but there's no way in hell a modern animation studio wouldn't take the opportunity to just fuck it up
>>289401253>What's it likeKuze Shunpei, a high-school student, is on spring break going to Hokkaidou when he loses his wallet. Stranded in the mountains with no money and his motorcycle having run out of gas, he passes out in the snow on the side of the road. When he wakes up he finds that he's been saved and brought to the Watarai farm, a horse ranch that breeds race horses. There he meets a host of various people, ranging from stable hands to the owner and his family (which includes four daughters).
>>289402511Knowing and liking Patlabor, I have no idea what this is going to be like. Is this going to make me care about horses and horse racing, I'm already sympathetic to Uma Musume
>>289355538>>289398832>As per the webms, Ota's definitely a fucking retard but his heart is generally in the right placeFuck Ota and fuck YOU too!The goes as far as shooting one of this colleges in the back.

>>289405594Does it have a Kanuka equivalentOr Shinobu even
>>289397267Funny enough that's the reason she doesn't show up in the movies, Oshii finds it hard to write someone "perfect">smart as Goto>competent pilot>prettyetc
>>289405854Just have her be cool and show up midway as reinforcements, or just chuck her in the command car and give crucial advice and encouragements
I only just realised how compressed the release timeline of Patlabor media is. Three different continuities started within the span of about 2 years:Manga: March 1988 - May 1994Early Days OVA: April 1988 - June 1989Movie 1: July 1989TV Anime: October 1989 - September 1990TV Anime New Files: November 1990 - April 1992Movie 2: August 1993I don't think Kanuka even appears in the manga until well after the end of the TV series.
>>289363613>weaboosFunny because japan loves the franchise, all are steinerfags, and bandai had to rip off the tabletop recently in desperation to sell more plastic crack because gunpla sales are all low.
