I have a hard time understanding this line of thought. Death Note is a drama. It wouldn't have been as exciting if Light didn't make a dozen incriminating mistakes, or if L wasn't a giant homo who let his personal feelings get in the way, etc. Character flaws bring about charm and progression.

The brutal truth is that Light is a midwit and L is an autist. The former is ~110IQ, the latter ~120IQ. A 'genius' would have picked up the Death Note and done analysis on it without ever implicating themselves. That being said, both characters are written as such to drive a story.

The series addresses why societies wouldn't start using fake names, albeit indirectly.
L says that if they tried to hide information from Kira that Kira would start targeting innocent people in highly public ways, with the implied message of "they care more about the criminals than they do you." Whether or not you believe that the general public would be more upset with the governments or Kira, L reasoned that it wasn't a gamble that they'd want to take.
But either way we have seen that what remained of organized crime groups (the mafia under Mello) moved to universally using pseudonyms after Kira started activity.

The exact nature of Kira targets is not made explicit so we can't say for certain if he was targeting corrupt government officials. Most likely I could reason that Light would not want to aim at politicians unless they have a proven, public display of corruption because it would imply that Kira has a political agenda rather than being the "god delivering justice on the world."
Most world governments bent the knee to Kira over the course of the story so I don't think it's unreasonable to assume he was targeting some of the elites.
And if you think about it, a politician using a pseudonym in a world with Kira would be just terrible optics, particularly if he's not arbitrarily killing people based on shit like tax policy and specifically targeting things everyone would agree is wrong like insider trading. Since it'd basically be them outing themselves as having intent to do some shit that would otherwise get Kira to target them.
