This series is literally about two seething women. When you're aware of the actual history, they become just scheming brats.

>Sitara: The Mongols killed my master, even though my master sacrificed herself for me because I called their scary general a thief, even though my master warned my not to resist and he has a sword and armed men and we are just helpless women.

>Toregene: I will have my revenge against the Mongols who destroyed my tribe, the Merkits, even though my tribe decided to attack the Mongols while they were sleeping after they falsely sued for peace the day before.

Then after Hulagu appoints Al-Tusi as the adminstrator of the city, he reminsces about Sitara to him and hopes she's living her life well, unaware by that point she's a corpse sunk into a river.

This the map in the year 1300, the Mongol Empire divided into four major khanates, the Yuan Dynasty that took over China and Mongolia, the Chagatai Khanate in Central Asia and Ilkhanate in Persia and Mesopotamia. Not shown here are minor khanates like the Ogudei Khanate (located between the Chagatai Khanate and the Yuan Dynasty).

The Mongol Empire was split into two sides, The Yuan Dynasty and Il-Khanate fought against the anti-Kublai coalition led by Kaidu, Khanate of the Ogudei Khanate, minor Toluid Khanates led by the relatives of Mongke and Arik Boke and the Chagatai Khanate. The Golden Horde was initially allied with the Ogudei Coalition but ultimately allied with Kubali after the death of the previous Khan Mengu-Timur.

Despite this, the four khanates briefly reunited into once Kaidu died and the Yuan Dynasty and the Chagatai Khanate destroyed the Ogudei Khanate and split their territories between them.

While the Yuan could no longer directly order the 3 other khanates and the they both engaged raids against each other, they did interact each other through trade and envoys and recognized the Yuan as their nominal overlord.

It was bad, but comparing what the Umayyads did to Persia to what the Mongols did is like comparing a coughing baby to a hydrogen bomb. There are no exact figures, but the Umayyads killed roughly 120,000 Persians in 20 years. The Mongols killed up to 10-15 million in just 3 years.

You have that very much backwards, anon. Islamic culture is to a rather ludicrous degree just a globalised version of Persian culture.
Persian morals, Persian arms and armor, Persian stories, Persian architecture, Persian aesthetics,...
Go and look up artifacts from the very first Caliphates and you'll quickly notice how much more Roman it looks as Arabs were more strongly influenced by the Mediterranean rather than Persians (just look at where Medina, Mecca are and overlay Roman provinces on whatever map you're looking at) before they took over Persia and started interacting with these folks more.

Hijabs, harems, onion domes, diwans,... if you exclude curved swords and the Chinese artstyle (imported by the Turkic and Mongolic nomads), it is by and large Persian culture permeating everywhere.

NTA but the Arab tribes had a lot of interaction with the Roman world. They had been part of the Roman Red Sea trade for much of a millennia, and had been a hotbed of both Jewish and Christian missionary efforts (which is where Islam got a lot of it's Abrahamic theology). The Ghassanids for instance were a Christian Arab kingdom in what is today Western Saudi Arabia that functioned as a Roman client state. They fought as a Roman proxy against the Lakmids, an Arab Kingdom in what is today Eastern Saudi Arabia, who functioned as a Persian client state and constantly fought the Ghassanids in proxy wars. Islams big thing was that it got all the warring Arab kingdoms to go "Wait a minute, the Romans and Persians just wrecked each other in a 30 year long war, why don't we stop fighting as their clients and just take them over?" And so they did. After the Arab conquests, they inherited the heart of Persian bureaucracy in Iraq and Iran, but missed the "seat" of Roman culture in Anatolia. So Persian culture became the basis of a lot of future Islamic culture and removed a lot of Roman influence (especially as they were still at war with Rome and not Persia), as the Arabs had always been a peripheral people who imitated the culture of larger imperial powers for prestige.

It was the lifeline of Roman trade with the civilized world.
Since Europe was a barren, yet undeveloped wasteland of barbarity (fur and amber being the only thing on offer) and the Persians forever a hostile ""superpower"" (obviously not an appropriate term but this is /a/, not a dissertation), Red Sea was The route for basically any trade of value. Spices, silks, glassware,... everything passed through there and Arabic kingdoms and cities were an active part of the journey down towards the Indian ocean.

It is really perceptible when you focus on the precious little Umayyad stuff that has been preserved. Roman mosaics and artstyle everywhere, once they start settling in they come up with minarets and build them... as copies of Roman lighthouses. Almost naked figures, actual statues, natural decorations (instead of the abstract patterns), et cetera.
They weren't completely cut off from Mesopotamia and thus Persian (then Sassanian) influence but it was in a minority position compared to clear Greco-Roman influence. However, as time goes on you can probably figure out what happened. Since the Romans remain enemies while Mesopotamia and Persia become a core province of their empire, they start adopting Persian things more and more, and once Abbasids take power (Persian leaders, turn "Arabs, Muslim converts and others" into "Muslims and others", spearhead the adoption of Arabic script for Persian texts) the floodgates pour open and what, in a simplified way, was a culture 8 parts Roman, 1 part Arabic and 1 part Persian becomes 8 parts Persian, 1 part Roman (the adoption of minarets from Greco-Roman towers happens during the Abbasid period) and 1 part Arabic.

>X were actually short too?
Pre-modern horses were all ponies by modern definition. Whether you think of Roman armies, Persian cataphracts, Norman and knightly cavalry charges, all of that has been done from, by modern standards following the start of breeding horses for size into the giant mutants they are today, absolutely midget horses.
It's one of those things that a lot of people push back against but by now we've got thousands of horse remains measured and catalogued and everything matches up. Workhorses, warhorses, sacrifices inhumed with great (Viking, Slavic, nomadic,...) chiefs all show the exact same picture of the natural horse stature. Which is considered small enough to be called a pony today.
I think it's really neat and it's fun once you look closer to period drawings and start noticing how going by proportions between the rider and horse (how far down their feet reach, how far above the head of the horse they reach), they were either all putting NBA stars to shame or their horses really weren't the 2m+ behemoths of today.
But some people consider it tantamount to saying their mother is a fat whore for some incomprehensible reason.

This sounds like folk etymology, anon.
Firstly, the whole Da + State name is established in Chinese centuries before the birth of Mongolian. Da Tang is well-attested and used all over, you can find the exact same in Manyoushuu and the like.
Secondly, while you propose the name neatly fitting into some Mongolian word, the historical texts at the time rendered it as "Dai Ön" so you'd first need to prove DaiÖn is how Mongolians used to say Dayan in Old Mongolian (whatever the name is for the language during Genghis' rule and thereabouts).
And finally, when setting the name of Qing from Jin, the initials of Mandarin hadn't undergone palatalisation yet and so they called it Tsing (and Kin). Again, you need to show dai tsing mapping to a Manchu etymology back in the day, not dai chin today.

Kwambaku Fideyoshi of Woozaka (Kanpaku Hideyoshi of Oosaka but in Japanese contemporary to his life) and all that.
Languages change all the time and you're looking at periods which contain really drastic changes in the pronunciation of Chinese so you can't just randomly equate modern words with whatever 700 years ago.

To me, those looked like they were from pre-Islamic Arabian culture, but then wouldn't that just be Islamic culture if it was that

Looking back if they did transfer their culture it wouldn't have been this, as the tribes were nomads like the Mongols

They spread their language and religion to Persia, no. That's still part of their culture

Surely someone will pick up the manga soon
>>
From The Jackmeister's video where he dispels the myth of the Mongol Empire being fractured and says they actually reunited until the end.

Here's are the actual khanates during the fracturing. The Ogudei Khanate led a anti-Yuan coalition formed with the Chagatai Khanate, the remnants of Mongke and Arik Boke's factions and the Golden Horde Khanate that split the empire as the Yuan and Illkhanate and the anti-Yuan coalition raided and invaded each other.

Only with the death of Kaidu, the leader of the Ogudei Khanate and the destruction of the khanate itself did the empire reunite but ultimately the Great Khan from the Yuan couldn't directly order the other khanates anymore.

The big problem is that the official english release is up to Vol.4 and Vol.5 is likely to be released in the end of this year.

It's no wonder scanlators avoid touching it since someone will just dump the official manga on some site.

And here's the Mongol Empire after the Ogudei Khanate was ultimately destroyed and rest of the Anti-Yuan coalition acknowledged the Yuan as their nominal overlord.

It really makes Toregene and Fatima's efforts look meaningless in the long run as the empires fell after due to the typical "majority settled people kicking out the nomadic minority" phase of nomadic empires.

This dude deals with accounts of yurt and cart colors. Black was seen as protective or precious in those contexts. Treasured things go in the black cart. During a thunderstorm you put on black clothes not to get struck. But also black clothes on the newly elected khan, which the show did use right now.
He even mentions white for mourning (among a billion other things, they really had a thing for white) but doesn't cite where he got it from and the overall tone of that paper seems to read more like an opinion piece article with some research thrown in rather than a reasonably peer-reviewed text.

Chinese also have a funeral drawing by the mongols
>http://www.china.org.cn/english/MATERIAL/194095.htm
But that one's chock-full of Buddhist symbolism once you read more about it (here, but you'll need to TL it: https://www.sohu.com/a/993356949_121119371). The people in it don't wear any particular singular color, though. So there's that.

I'll stick with thinking it's a modern choice, particularly to make it obvious what's happening in that scene since they're trying to be more artsy about it.

Someone said that raids on the city by bands of nomadic robbers are commonplace. However, they always come in small groups, using hit-and-run tactics. Perhaps they assumed the raid would be over within three days for them to leave the city. That’s why they kept their valuables in the basement and felt safe leaving them unguarded. The other slaves were even able to relax and laugh. They never imagined that a large force would actually storm the place.

>>
I like the contrast between how Muslims and Mongols think about blood in meat. The Mongols believed it gave flavor by keeping it, while Muslims focus on draining the blood for cleanliness and to minimize the animal's suffering.
Funny coincidence because just the other day, I googled religious tolerance in Mongolia under Genghis Khan, including how Muslim captives were treated. Apparently, he didn't allow halal slaughter, and that remained the case until Berke Khan permitted it around 1260.
Don't worry, Fatima. You're a slave and have no say in what your master is feeding you. According to the Quran, you're still halal, baby girl.

Unlike him, she actually went to China, though.
>Says he became a governor of a Chinese province.
Not a single record of anything like that.
>Talks at great lengths about the local customs.
But never notices that they eat with chopsticks.
Talks about animal hunts in places that were stripped bare of any forests and non-human habitat centuries earlier.
And says his hosts in Fuzhou eat a human a day.
>...

Marco Polo's account is full of nonsense that one can't explain without invoking the magical formula "everything he said was true, it's the people writing it down that fucked it all up."
But given how they go in absolute bonkers directions... while also preserving all the Chinese and Mongolian names which do seem to really map to places, they probably did pay attention when writing this shit down and copying it over.
I.e. the bullshit is probably from the Venetian himself and a lot of what he said comes down to heresay. He most likely interacted with Chinese in Mongolia but never visited China proper.

Meh. He's far more accurate and has few errors than the other travelers during his time.

If Polo was merely a compilation of other people's stories, those stories would likely have been recorded somewhere else by someone else, but Marco Polo was the only Westerner who recorded these stories for hundreds of years before or after him.

A lot of his stories do have equivalents in Islamic travelogues. Like the fire-breathing lizards and such, IIRC.
He was a dude who spoke Persian and was definitely in Mongolia. But the moment he opens his mouth regarding China it starts falling apart and has to be second-hand heresay even if he claims to have lived there for 20 years and attended every grand event during his stay, which is like a random Muslim traveler explaining how he was present for every bigger historical event anywhere in Europe when he took a trip there to study the heathens or send a diplomatic message.
Have Stella here buddy up with some Chinese diplomat over her learning fetish to tell her stories whenever he comes over to report to the Mongols and you get a much more palatable vision of Polo's travels.
>>
>>289462186
He didn't job to the persians.

The siege he was referring to was the Siege of Gurganj, the old capital of the Khwarizem Empire in which he led the siege and Chagatai and Ogudei worked together with him to attack it.

The problem is that Jochi and Chagatai quarreled with each other on how to proceed. Jochi wanted to pressure the city to surrender since it was promised to him by father Genghis while Chagatai wanted to massacre it. Thus attack lasted longer and the Mongols suffered casualties.

Ultimately, Genghis ordered them to cut the bullshit and had Ogedei command the siege and Ogudei massacred the hell out of the city.

Japan, Annam (Vietnam) and Java all at the same time.
That "at the same time" being the thing that did him in.
Japan invasion bankrupted Kamakura government and caused its fall and he even planned another invasion, just died before it could be carried out.
Annam capitulated, just on somewhat-reasonable terms rather than a complete and unconditional surrender. If it had been Genghis, he'd have burnt the place to the ground again (which they did with each invasion) like in Goryeo Korea but this guy just wanted to conquer more and more.
... and so when Champa capitulated out of principle, he found the next target down on Java and sent his army there. And even there they were kinda successful in getting some power but it was a doomed effort in the end. It's the closest to a real defeat but even here he was still planning another go at it.

TL;DR: Look up how Mongolian wars normally went because that's often lost in the memes (and partial retellings where anyone involved ignores the rest of the world and proclaims themselves the one and only ones to have ever beaten Mongols in battle). Mongols got fucked a hundred times in all sorts of battles. But Genghis and people who still understood how things went knew that if they kept the pressure up, their target would brake and THEN they can pick the next one. Kublai, for whatever reason, went for many places at once which meant fewer attacks spaced more apart and thus he... didn't live long enough to see those conquests through (and use the spoils of success in one to fuel the next). But the part about sending a failed expedition wasn't really unique to him. Even Genghis had failed wars.

The pretty ones go anywhere from indistinguishable from a 10/10 in China or Japan to a Korean girl without jaw surgery (which I think most would still consider pretty, but definitely not the folks living east of them).
