>>289475899The way I see it, reading the LNs is still the intended experience for dedicated fans. I watched all of season 1 before I read any of the LNs. I had considered skipping the first 6 volumes, but decided not to and am very glad for it. The anime manages to do a pretty good job of portraying the broad strokes of things but the LNs just give you so much more detail about the history of the world, thoughts and concerns of the other characters, etc. The anime is still a good adaptation but it's just not the right medium for conveying those sorts of things, and that's fine. It's allowed me to enjoy the same story twice, hopefully it's the same for others.

But It's understandable they don't adapt everything or the anime would suck balls. The main thing about decent writing in any medium is setting things up. Even one scene that is seemingly "not a big deal" may enhance your experience later on, because it will establish the record that the author actually gives a shit and rewards the reader/watcher for remembering details. This greatly helps people retain information and engage more with the series. Surprises and plot twists are cool, but it's even better when they feel earned and you didn't see them coming because you didn't connect the various facts rather than the author just pulling something out of his ass, or maybe you did and you feel good about yourself due to that fact.

There's also the option to adapt parts of it in OVAs instead. The main appeal to me when it comes to this scene is that you follow through Rudeus' entire grief thought process, into the realization and painful admission Paul was his father. The visuals could've been just Rudeus in his bed and him "falling asleep" going in this almost surreal dream-like couple of scenes where he is in his old body reviewing what happened in his head, then him reminiscing about his old parents and then remiscing about Paul, and then we're finally brought back to him awake realizing it and crying. This should've been half of the focus of the episode. But they didn't have time and had to rush through to get to muh sex and muh marriage with Roxy and they still killed the past life admission scene.

If this season lands, it'll carry the momentum for everything that follows. If it doesn't, the rest of the adaptation loses a lot of its impact so they're kinda going all in now.
