Having one as the protagonist this time round and having him be sympathetic is very cool. The internal conflict going on in Jan's head is also very interesting to me - between hating his dad for being abusive and having respect for him as a genuinely talented mentor - plus also there's some kind of love for him despite everything. I'm rambling here but what I mean to say is that I'm pleasantly surprised by how much depth there is to this story already. Also, the direction has been really solid. This episode made me pick up the manga and I thought it was interesting how Jan looks the exact same in the anime as in the manga but Kiriko has been pretty modernized, especially compared to the first chapters.
