It's just as... good... heh heh... as I thought it would be.

It's ass just like the original manga, so yes I'd say it did

I haven't watch it yet but I hate how it's brighten up the manga and added in more goofy faces, the old manga had goody moments but it was just standard amount, it was still more serious and gritty than this is with the one liners and the run down city, this is too bright, clean and colorful, it should look like the PS1 game not this. Now there's misconception the GITS manga is a bright comedic book when it's more like a gritty crime comic with some comedy moments like your standard manga/anime at the time also I heard the last and it doesn't fit at all. It should have a tone like the original Bubblegum Crisis not whatever this is.

Cyborgs should be mopey, super sad people who always have existential crises, because they don't know if they can be called human.
I mean, super strength, sturdier bodies, immune to disease, long lived. Who would actually want this?

It does a great job capturing the rare comedic moments that were in SAC while still maintaining the atmosphere that made me fall in love with GitS in the first place. I'm loving it bros.
>>
>>289516463
I really don’t understand why people on here don’t like it unless they are just mentally ill contrarians. The first episode could maybe have slowed the pacing down a bit, but other than that it’s been good so far.
>>
>>289516555
wtf
>>
>>289518329
I actually liked the breakneck exposition pace of the first episode compared to the fucking glacial pace of all the standard isekai slop I've been watching for the better part of a year. Heavy Knight being the worst one (pacing-wise) so far. It sounds cheesy but having to read so quickly and keep up adds to the atmosphere and immersion.
>>
>>289516463
It's embarrassingly gynocentric. All the men are old, ugly and useless in a fight. They just stand around and talk while invincible ninja lesbian does everything. I prefer Edgerunners.

I like how it just makes sense that the head of security in a government secret facility is a true Adam Smasher tier professional who solos Motoko's entire team and she only wins because of a freak coincidence. It makes the world more believable, they wouldn't hire an amateur for this job. And it also shows us in the very first chapter that Major is not a Mary Sue unstoppable badass just because she's the main character, if she's outclassed or if she fucks up she has to deal with the consequences
>>
>>289516543
The only reason for the politics is to explain why Section 9 gets assigned to a case. You can pretty much ignore it.

>>289519114
Shirow says he intentionally had Motoko make one mistake in every case just to show that she isn't invincible.

>>
>>289520278

Most of /a/'s complains are just complains for the sake of complains, with barely any substantial criticisms to work with. Hell, most of them just reveal they're newfags who have never even read the manga.

>>289516463
>Has the anime delivered according to your expectations?
Unlike most other people who were excited about this anime, I came in with zero expectations and think it's okay so far. What sucks for this adaptation is that I'm also watching SAC for the first time at the same time that I'm watching this, and I'm finding myself more eager to see more of SAC than more of this. Also something about GITS '26 is rubbing me the wrong way, I think it's how it looks like an anime from the 90's which are aesthetically all the rage among larpers right now.
>>
>>289520403
Batou's always looked like a dopey retarded gorilla and that's why he's the GOAT.

The only thing I don't like is how each episode has each foot in a different chapter so it's all broken up. People would probably complain less about the breakneck pace if each episode concluded properly.

The soul or indeed, yes, ghost in classical Christian theology is an emergent property of human life enshrined in the moment the living cells of your parents fuse to create the germ of a new life, and in the sense that GiTS cyberization draws a line between a brain in a container driving around a prosthetic body and androids, yes, the brain.

What's wrong, anon?
Genuinely one of my favorite twists in scifi, both the times he pulled it off
>>
>>289516463
So in Stand Alone Complex when Motoko is killed and ends up on the internet how does she manage to keep her personality and memories intact?
The Laughing Man even told her that it was pretty much impossible to do and he, who was a far better hacker than her, could never manage it.
>>
>>289521870
after you're gone
>>
>>289521824
It's less his twists I have conflict with and more Kishiro's handling of internal conflicts, pacing, how we transition from one chapter to the next, etc. Like, Gorilla Hitler should not have given Alita so much internal grief, especially over the most overused trope around (and the "resolution" to this conflict is both infuriating and hilarious).

The first time he pulled off the brainfunny is a good example of all my feelings about Alita. There was time spent building up this world, getting you connected to these cool characters, and setting up great questions about them and their connection to this world. Like why did Ido leave/get kicked out of Zalem? Why are you still alive? Etc, etc. Then before we get the chance to do more with the character, we completely throw away the ability to follow up on that but at the same time introduce an insane plotline that's really cool and makes me want to keep reading.

Genuinely impressed Last Order even bothered to follow up some long-standing questions and go crazy with the world building, which is why I could stand a lot of its dumber decisions. Couldn't do it for Mars Chronicle, though. I did like its opening at least.

I really, really like the art style. I hope retro anime makes a comeback.

I always disliked the manga though, especially Motoko!s moe personality. So it's not for me, I prefer SAC's more serious time. But I'm glad it exists for people who wanted a manga adaptation, it seems fine at doing that for the moment.

Finally finished the first episode.
I liked it. The mix of goofiness and seriousness is nice, artstyle is very pretty and colors are yummy. Can't say anything about plot yet because it was their first mission but it wasn't bad at least.
Unfortunately Maaya sounds like Shiki Ryougi for me instead of Motoko. But it's not a big deal.
I noticed that they like to call every part of their equipment or body and it gives me a video game impression.
I think the move is better but this show is still great. Absolutely don't understand all hate.

>>
>>289528800
>So what is this exactly?
GItS 2026 is very close adaptation of source material: manga.
Previous adaptations took significant liberties in both plot and styling.
1995 movie & SAC seasons are worth watching. Everything else is meh.
There is no particular order, you can start watching older stuff while waiting for new 2026 episodes coming out.
>>
IMPORTANT QUESTION

How reliably are the DEI (dividual) episodes for Standalone Complex 2nd marking the "standalone" episodes that are not in the compilation movie/OVA?

So far it feels like half of them were actually included in the movie (watched up to EP10)
>>
>>289528800
You don't need to watch anything first. It's a post-cyberpunk world where super hacker spec ops detective/SWAT people fight cyberterrorism with robot spider tanks and AI operator ladies. It's pretty cool. As others have said it's meant to be a faithful adaptation to the manga, which hasn't happened before.
The 1995 movie is great, but I'd recommend you wait until after this to watch it.
GITS:SAC you can watch any time. Before, during, after, won't matter. It's a whole different continuity and completely different story really. 2nd Gig, the second season, is also good.
Personally, I'm thinking eventually I will like SAC > 2026 > 1995, but I really like all of them. There's a bunch of other stuff that's not really that good.

It's honestly fascinating how a manga by Masamune Shirow led to one of the cyberpunk staples by Mamoru Oshii, which in turn led to The Matrix and it all can be considered a long chain of events that formed what is a huge influence for the modern cyberpunk genre and now the loop is closing with the return to the manga by Shirow but this time it's in an animated form with modern technology.

Because people are realizing the original manga wasn't as good as the later iterations and what it inspired? If you like the new show the loop would reset and start a new loop or "loop back" according to your analogy.

It's about the same level of goof. You just didn't understand it before so you thought it was more serious.

No one in their right minds or who isn't shitposting would ever say the manga was uninspired. But later iterations are just much more muscular works of sci-fi with arguably a much more appropriate tone. I don't think this is unfair at all to say.

Same level of goof, but SAC had better execution and balanced the goof better. The original manga and the new show balance goof with brutal fights and technology being extremely dubious in design and use considering how advanced it has become. SAC framed technology as a tool for corporate control of public opinion, sabotage solutions that can only benefit the common person, and government organizations playing nice with the corruption because the situation was too complicated to explain to the public without causing mass hysteria. Also the term Stand Alone Complex literally describes people impersonating celebrities, mass shooters, and revolutionaries before such a thing hit critical mass in the real world.

>Because people are realizing the original manga wasn't as good as the later iterations and what it inspired?

For me it's the other way around. I saw the movie first, then bought the manga, and enjoyed the manga so much more. Not that the movie is bad. If I didn't enjoy the movie, I wouldn't have bought the manga. But the manga had so much more. I loved SAC too, because it was way more like the manga compared to the movie. Innocense was different, but also enjoyable. And I enjoy the new anime because it is so much like the manga as well.

Hell, there were even parts of SAC2045 and Arise that I found enjoyable, eventhough overall it was trash. The only thing I couldn't enjoy was the live action movie. That was complete shit. It felt like the people that made that movie had no idea what GITS was about.

Great episode. A bit front-loaded in terms of action, which was awesome, but some more of that philosophical seriousness coming in towards the end. Bunch of stuff I want to make webms of but don't have time for now unfortunately. Maybe other people will beat me to most of it and post it.
I think the overall pacing is good, and will make more sense when the whole thing is out. These first three episodes really are just setting the stage for the main story, and some world-building needs to happen also. Really good OST.
Anyway, Robot Rondo next week. If you know, you know.

You don't need to watch anything first. The beauty of GITS is that every work is like a different universe that are all a different take on the source material. You should watch the GITS: Stand Alone Complex series. That's an excellent series. If you enjoy that, you'll probably enjoy the other stuff too.

SAC has the better story. I think most people would agree. The major case in that is just the best of them, and there's some great minor cases as well. But I'm still really enjoying this new anime. It's visually great, sounds great, it's pretty fun all around. Of course I've already seen SAC, so the mystery of it doesn't hold as much weight for me anymore. Not that I don't know how this anime will go either, but I don't yet know how exactly they'll do everything in it. There's room for style. I am looking forward to it every week.

Shortcuts are always going to be a reality in any production. There's compromises in everything. Always will be. It's how those are handled that really matters. I think in this, it was visually quite interesting and a fun way to do it. I enjoyed the surprise of it and the whole sequence was great.
>>
>>289530154
Some of the stuff SAC is referencing happened in the 90s. Masumune Shirow was born in 1961 and the original manga came out 1989. How could he capture "the 90s" when the GITS manga was written before the 90s had even begun?

Terrible episode. Anyone who watched the 1995 movie can tell that this is basically Jesus (right) to Jesus (left). And it's an extra appropriate analogy because "muh faithful adaptation" = "original Jesus was Black actually therefore the "original portrait" here is invalid!" (same low IQ argument).

I'm dropping the new series after this third episode. For laughs and giggles while we were streaming it, we went back and watched the garbage truck chase scene in the original movie. It wasn't just a night and day difference: it's about purposedly shit on something to ruin it, exactly like Hollywood does. Science Saru is sabotaging Ghost in the Shell for their own ends, so fuck them.

They and their fanboys use the original manga's use of super deformed reactions as a cover. Saying "it was in the manga", then following it up mendaciously with "then I can fucking put it all over the show, make it the focus point". In short, they inverted object and background. The Ghost in the Shell's main object was deadly serious and straight, like in the movie and SAC: but in the background, in small reaction panels, you could also see some super deformed. Instead they turned it around, and it's become a wacky SD show with a few scifi elements thrown in. Total inversion. Total subversion.

Yeah, real adult stuff you need to announce it like a child. Maybe, just maybe, the original manga was extremely juvenile except for the scattered sci-fi flavored philosophical conversations and later iterations were better at balancing humor, characters, and plot than the very first time Shirow put pen to paper. Things can improve over time you know? Or have you given up on the very idea of position progression?

>>
I think the reason Oshi's take on the source material worked so well is because he focused on the little philosophical quandries that get touched on briefly in this episode and makes that the entire point of the film, and that suits his contemplative directing style. He sacrificed a lot of the charm of the original but he made something more out of the parts he chose to work with. The chase scene from this episode and the last is maybe the most iconic scene from the film, but all I could think about while watching this episode was the same interrogation scene from the film where they talk about simulated memories. The idea of implanting memories and what that means for a person's own sense of self and grip on reality is fascinating the think about. The scene from the film really conveys the gravity of the situation in a way that gets under my skin. The whole film has a dreamlike quality to it that matches that feeling of confusion. This episode is obviously in keeping with the manga, which is nice it's own way - that you can have this kind of black humour where reality-breaking sci-fi tech is a problem in the lives of everyone and they just have to complain about it and get on with things whenever something crazy happens - but it does leave a little bit to be desired. Personally I think this panel from the manga does a better job than the anime of conveying the weight of the same scene in a single image. There's so much you could do with this one throwaway character and his situation. It's interesting to think about.
Completely unrelated but I love how cute the fuchikomas are in this. Anway, sorry for rambling.

Yes, you could do exactly that if you wanted to, and it would probably work well enough. Or you could just frame the shot the same way as in the panel, dial down the colour and brightness in the foreground, and go for moodier lighting, to get more or less the same effect.

I expected it to be a considerable tone shift previously only found in the tachikoma ova's, and so far it has been pretty much that. I'm indifferent to this iteration. Which is far better than the last couple of releases. SAC2045 was alright if you could get past the animation and design from that sameface russian guy.
>>289534903
The point of making an anime out of a manga was using it as a storyboard and revising it/adapting it to the medium. Shirow has an interview where he talks about this and why the movies and SAC work so well when people asked what eh thought about how different they were. I think there's one where, barring a translation error, he even claims that a 1:1 adaptation wouldn't really work, just read the damn manga if you want the original story.

The perfect comparison to nu-GITS would be the Shining tv movie. Stephen King wrote the original mediocre novel and when director Stanley Kubrick picked it up, he turned it upside down and elevated it tremendously. The hack writer seethed about it for 20 years, openly shitting on Kubrick. Until he finally got to direct a tv adaptation himself, and got laughed out the door because of how crass and cheap it was. A show is good or bad on its merits, not because it's more or less of a photocopy.

It does feel like I both do and do not really need to pay attention to most of the details in this. I’m not sure why they needed to give us some facts on some of the process of making a cyborg body, I doubt I’ll need to remeber any of that info but it was neat in the moment and the nurse was cute, and her sex friend apparently along with the cyborg they were working on in that bit.

My point was that you can, in fact, compare manga panels to frames of animation. If it's a still shot you can compare the composition of each, the linework of each, the use of colour or lack thereof in contrast with the solid black and white of manga. You can compare artstyles and character designs. You can compare the lighting, the shading, the level of detail. If it's an inbetween frame during motion then those comparisons might be few and thin, but you can still compare differences between mediums in broader strokes, and not by direct one-to-one comparison. Are you going to refute this?

I don't get your point, this adaptation has been good so far and the previous entries in the Oshii movies and the SAC seasons from 2002-4 were also good.
Shirow never seethed about the adaptations either.
it's different from the shining tv movie which was badly directed by a bad director

If you need me to compare the scene in the anime to this one panel, then I would say that there wasn't a single shot in the whole scene that was as effective as the panel I'm on about (speaking purely in terms of composition). The scene was used to give exposition about the puppet master, and as a result, it traded the one-way mirror for a surveillance camera. The major behind the mirror (which frames the other characters) and everyone else imposing over the victim of the false memory implant, in tandem with the harsh solid black background, add to the sense of crushing weight that is exactly what the character is feeling as he's hunched over in the interrogation room, coming to terms with his reality being false. The emotion is conveyed very well in a single image. There's no reason why you wouldn't want to replicate it as a still shot in the anime. Even if it's only tagged on at the end, it would've been better than what we got - which was a series of close ups of the guy looking sad, and then of the other guys being quietly sympathetic. The surveilance footage was straight on - no perspective being used to convey the mood, or characters blocking, etc. Then after more exposition with the major, it cuts to the end of chapter gag with the guy working again the next day - which probably would've worked better being shuffled later down the line in the edit, if not as a post-credit scene.
You read manga at your own pace, so it's up to the director and editor to decide how much attention is given to any single shot. There is nothing about the panel I originally posted that would've been too hard to replicate as a still shot with some minimal character animation, but even then, it would've worked as a still shot with no movement towards the end of the scene. No other shot in the anime conveyed the turmoil the guy must've been going through in such a visually striking and instantly communicable way.
Happy?
