>>289526148They're about the characters. It's not always about a better life, just a different life. I'll never be in a band and I don't want to be in a band, actually sounds like an awful time to me. But it's interesting to see people in a band who actually enjoy it. I'll never go on a road trip. I fucking hate long drives, being trapped in a car. But give me some characters I'm interested in who actually are having fun doing that, and I'll watch gladly. Going around doing crowded tourist shit, in the heat of a japanese summer? Sounds sweaty, noisy, and annoying to me. A lot of sore feet plus a nightmarish amount of travel to get there and back again. But I'll watch that and learn something about places I would never want to actually go to myself in real life, and still be culturally enriched or whatever. Or maybe it's just a food episode. All the best SoL end up just about food anyway. I don't need to actually go there and eat that specific food at that specific place, but I can learn that such food exists and then go make it myself at home, or order it at a local restaurant if I can find one that serves it. And on and on it goes. It's like any sort of educational content to me, with generally cute girls making cute Japanese noises the whole time. It's entertaining and it's intellectually stimulating too.If every single SoL is living a better life than you are, and you're just filled with regrets, then maybe you should work on improving your life. I don't watch for an escape, I watch for interesting time seeing stuff I wouldn't do, with characters I like. One can live vicariously in others without being miserable in one's own life.

You don't watch documentaries on people who are the lowest quartile in a given activity, beginners who don't know anything, you watch the people at the top that are actually doing the stuff that's interesting.

I want to know the story and the author understands what the table stakes are to achieve a certain height in a given scenario. as it stands the genre today is nothing more than cheat isekai. and I'd bet it's the exact same demographic consuming both even if they would have solidified their tastes such that they never cross-consume.
