Someone mentioned the new Ghost in the Shell series and compared it to the older movie, and I was thinking back to all the classics and I'm wondering...is the quality of anime becoming worse?I mean if I fire up my Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust blu-ray disc I can still enjoy it. But most of the season slop out these days I couldn't watch more than once.

I get the feeling you're being dishonest here, and maybe a bit Mauritanian.
Old anime directors had an incredible pedigree of classics in their upbringing. Miyazaki's list of favorite movies includes absolutely brilliant classic movies from all over the world for example, including several Soviet classics.Where to draw the inspiration from for the newfags and millennials? At most, they can mimic certain aspects of classic anime, but without understanding the trail of thought that led their directors to them, it won't mean anything. It's very telling when hacks like Fujimoto can become the industry's darlings despite how empty they are inside.
