Maomao regrets some outcomes that she couldn't avoid or learns some revelations about another character that might reframe how she has treated them in the past, but her actions are almost always so cold and utilitarian in nature that it leaves her little room for remorse later on. Yea but most readers aren't chemists. At least in hajime no ippo they explain the types of punches. Battle shonens explain their completely made up power mechanics. No reason this series can't just tell you about a bunch of poisons, then you hear of a murder and you guess which type was used, with the background knowledge of where a bunch of people were before the murder you could guess how it was administered but it'd still be a brain teaser you would only sometimes get right.

She is constantly under threat from the Emperor's Son. It's a typical theme for the setting and is usually used to explore a very steep power disparity dynamic. The LN ironically treats their relationship and dynamic as window dressing where as the principle stories are your mystery of the arc things.
there is very little forward momentum of their relationship dynamic even up to the most recent volume. A lot of spinning of wheels and largely unimportant side plots that go nowhere/get concluded within the volume or the next.
There are small incidents where Jinshi makes forward propositions either in moments of weakness or as a teas and Maomao nearly always responds the same way, with emotionally detached and unwanted resignation of fate.
To date their "relationship" has been written slightly as a tragedy. Maomao, because of how she was raised is completely disengaged with empathy when it comes to love, at least she cannot emotionally engage in it in any way. The closest she came to "love" was missing her friends from the rebellion arc. She fears being trapped in the palace and she doesn't really care about Jinshi's affections. But she also doesn't dwell in regret with the concept of being ordered to bed with him, so when it is "teased" or "suggested" she approaches it as dutifully as any other... duty. This doesn't please Jinshi as he wants her to want him in the same way and to the same extent he wants/likes/loves her. Although as it is written they don't really love each other at the moment. He doesn't see her as a possession but his subconscious understands her as one. For Maomao, she doesn't seem to care either way and sees a life in the palace, even as a caged bird as a far better alternative than a life in the streets. All of this is treated as a tertiary plot concern over a dozen volumes and you might get a page or two of "relationship advancement" between them over a single volume.

The last ~2-3 arcs involved other things and are "earning" them. In the last ~2 arcs Moamao isn't even the lynchpin or lead in solving the issues. She is more learning and observing from the sidelines while being nominally involved. It's decent writing in this aspect as it's balanced and she isn't some magical Mary Sue.

>The famine arc barely involves Maomao problem solving. She helps put together the correlation between bird population and locusts, but others knew before her and it didn't resolve anything. She did help make pesticide but it only helped one village and the crisis was not "soved by her"

Its, I forget the guy's name, but the surrogate apothecary who brings the solution to the court. Maomao is actually removed largely from the resolution of smallpox. The latest volumes are a bunch of "Side quests" involving matchmaking of characters that the reader likely doesn't care about, especially considering the progress made.


A major criticism I have with the story currently is that it doesn't know what it wants to be. It feels like it has meandered for 3 or 4 arcs now and the author doesn't know how to convincingly progress with the principle cast. I think the anime made the author want to drag out the series more from success.
